12 Top Supplements for Prostate Cancer

The conventional treatments for prostate cancer include everything from ‘watchful waiting’, active surveillance, external radiation therapy, radioactive seeds, to radical prostatectomy. Some less conventional treatments include hyperthermia, which can vary in intensity depending on the clinic, but has shown strong efficacy in some cases. But strong research shows that targeted supplements can be highly effective alongside or in some cases in lieu of the more damaging and expensive remedies.

Aside from the more standard essentials such as magnesium, selenium, CoQ10, and vitamin D, there are many non-toxic affordable supplements available that can be used alongside and often in lieu of other treatment offerings for prostate cancer. Keep in mind that quality matters as there is always the risk of harmful or risky additives. For example, while oleander has been found to increase the sensitivity to radiotherapy of PC-3 prostate cells and has other cancer-fighting properties,[i] some formulas contain grain alcohol, which is not advised as is typically made from GMO grain or corn. It is also very important to cycle supplements as cancer stem cells can be come resistant to even the best of the best.

While not inclusive, here are some top supplements for prostate cancer:

  • Aromastat-supports healthy hormonal balance in men; regulates testosterone and modulates aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen. Aromastat
  • Beta-sitosterol is a food-based plant sterol (Phyto sterol) which is noted for its ability to protect the prostate and relieve the symptoms of prostate problems. Studies have found that beta-sitosterol also kills both prostate cancer cells without harming normal cells, reduces prostate tumor growth, and protects against prostate cancer. Beta-sitosterol is found in olive oil, flax seed, nuts, avocado, and other fruits and vegetables. Beta-sitosterol
  • DIM (Diindolylmethane), a phytonutrient and plant indole found in cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, etc.) is a natural aromatase inhibitor, which is helpful for hormone-driven cancers. Joint USA/Chinese research reported in September 2016 found that DIM also reduces tumor growth by suppressing a gene known as PCGEM1 and promotes apoptosis (cancer cell death). DHT Block (DIM)
  • IP6 increases Natural Killer Cell activity; inhibits cell proliferation; helps stop cancer growth; inhibits cell progression; inhibits metastasis; induces apoptosis; and inhibits angiogenesis. Supports the p21 and p53 genes (tumor suppressor genes) that control cancer growth. “By targeting PI3K-ILK1-Akt pathway, IP6 suppresses cell survival, proliferation and angiogenesis and induces death in PCa cells, which might have translational potential in preventing and controlling the growth of advanced and aggressive PCa.” [ii]  IP6 or Cell Forte
  • Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) is a type of polysaccharide that comes from the cell walls of citrus fruit and is most commonly known as a source of dietary fiber. It can also lessen the “stickiness” of cancer cells that could be exacerbated with surgery and may lead to cancer metastasis. Evidence-based research has shown MCP to have a direct effect on prostate cancer. Studies have found MCP intake to decrease cancer cell adhesion, thus reducing the risk of metastases. MCP has been shown to prolong the time it takes for doubling of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels; the more slowly PSA doubles, the more slowly the tumor is growing. MCP also activates cancer-killing immune system cells (natural killer, or NK, cells), boosting their ability to patrol for and eliminate cancers as soon as they form Modified Citrus Pectin and ProstaCaid
  • OnKobel-Pro® –is a professional formulation of three unique botanicals (Pao pereira, Rauwolfia vomitoria, and golden leaf of Ginkgo biloba) and magnesium specially designed to help support cellular health. OnKobel-Pro® provides multiple levels of support for the growth of healthy cells, elimination of abnormal cells, and the maintenance of natural levels of enzymes that are critical for homeostasis (according to extensive research by Beljanski –see Description online). RGCC (a.k.a Greek test) lists OnKobel-Pro® as an agent that targets circulating tumor cells by inhibiting the growth and spread of cancer.   • Quercetin is an antioxidant which belongs to a group of plant pigments called flavonoids that give many fruits, flowers, and vegetables their colors. Like other antioxidants, quercetin helps scavenge free radicals in the body which damage cell membranes and tamper with DNA. In addition to protection against heart disease, studies have shown that quercetin inhibits the growth of cancer cells from prostate tumors, including cancer stem cells.   • Zeolite: chelates toxic minerals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminum; removes PCBs from the body; reduces diarrhea; improves nutrient absorption from the digestive tract; has anticancer properties as it activates the P21 and indirectly the suppressor gene P53; balances digestive pH; modulates the immune system, possibly in part by reducing toxic materials and targets pre-viral cells. This list is not inclusive, and synergistic food offerings matter as well. Male Infertility on the Rise from Cell Phone Use and Environmental Toxins

It is impossible to envision a guy today who does not use a cellphone, laptop, or other device with Wi-Fi function. We know that these devises lead to the development of several types of cancer, but did you know that they can also impact fertility? Did you also know that endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates can compromise male fertility?

What used to be mostly a female issue, fertility has now become a crisis for men as well. Some studies show it is a factor in 30-40% of infertility issues. While men create millions of new sperm daily, it is the quality of sperm that is at risk. To fertilize an egg, a man needs to be able to make healthy sperm and deliver it.

Sadly, the quality of sperm has diminished greatly in the past. A joint study done by Hebrew University and Mount Sinai medical school found that sperm counts have fallen by more than 50 percent in the last 40 years. What that means is that men are almost have as fertile as their grandfathers were.

The issue is complicated as there could be many underlying causes of declining sperm counts. Cell phones, smoking, alcohol consumption, oral contraceptives (contaminating tap water), and endocrine disruptors such as BPA, and phthalates are some of the most common.

Researchers performed at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, agree that isolating cell phone EMFs from other environmental factors will be a challenge going forward for infertility doctors and their patients. (Incidentally, they too acknowledge that the EMFs can enhance the excitability of the brain and have been classified as carcinogenic).[i]

Modern life could be the answer to the question of fertility — cell phone use, obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, inactivity, stress, and environmental toxins all play a role.  A 2013 study found that 20 hours of TV [or computer games] weekly may reduce sperm count by a whopping 50%, while 15 or more hours of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly may boost sperm count.[ii]

But of all of these, the hardest to deal with, are EMFs from various devices and exposures and toxins in the environment –specifically endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in things such as BPA and phthalates.

BPA and Phthalates

Chemicals such as BPA  mimic estrogen and can interfere with hormones such as testosterone. Found in plastics, paper products, and cash register receipts, BPA may be rewiring the male reproductive system, eroding sperm quality and quantity and even contributing to testicular disorders.

While not as detrimental to sperm as BPA, phthalates are also a problem. A review of various studies by the National Institute of Public Health confirmed “that phthalates cause diminished sperm count, increased frequency of abnormal spermatozoa and DNA damage in germ cells, especially after chronic exposure.”[iii]

EMFs 

Some of the Research on Cell Phone and Infertility:

  • In 2008, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found that the use of cell phones by men is associated with decreased fertility. The researchers found a decrease in sperm count, motility, viability, and morphology, all of which impact fertility.[iv]
  • 2010 research by the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University determined “that long-term exposure to mobile phone radiation leads to reduction in serum testosterone levels. Testosterone is a primary male gender hormone and any change in the normal levels may be devastating for reproductive and general health.”[v]
  • In 2012, Dr. Devra Davis, PhD, MPH and author of Disconnect: The Truth about Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family, spoke at the Integrative healthcare Symposium in NYC. She shocked all of us, including doctors and nurses, with evidence-based information regarding the dangers of cellphone on male fertility and various cancers. (Notably, her book was sold out at the conference). She commented that in Israel, there were signs over the urinals suggesting that men take their phones out of their pockets to protect future generations.   • For Disconnect, Davis interviewed numerous top researchers in the field, including Om P. Gandhi, who studied how cell phones affect the brain, and Franz Adlkofer, who studied how it affects DNA. She also pointed out that men who keep cell phones turned on in their pockets for hours a day have fewer sperm with more deformities. Davis  referenced the work of Harvard trained Ashok Agarwal, who has written more than four hundred peer-reviewed articles. He found that men with the lowest sperm counts were significantly more likely to keep their phones on their bodies all the time, usually in their pockets. He also reported that those who reported using a phone for four hours or more had the lowest and sickliest sperm counts, and that sperm exposed to the highest levels of cell phone radiation had the most deformities and the worst swimming abilities.
  • 2014 research found a direct correlation between cell phone radiation exposure, decreased sperm motility and DNA-fragmentation.[vi] DNA fragmentation within sperm can increase the risk of failed conception or miscarriage. Decreased sperm motility inhibits the ability of sperm to move and ‘swim’ property toward and egg. Decreased morphology refers to the size and shape of sperm. As morphology declines or deteriorates, there is less opportunity to fertilize an egg. The researchers recommend that one avoid holding a mobile device in one’s pants pocket. It only makes sense to keep one’s laptop off their lap.
  • Another 2014 study published in Progress in Biological Sciences commented that EMFs can damage sex organs and cause hormonal disorders. The confirmed that microwave radiation affects various tissues via induction of heat generation and temperature rise, particularly problematic for males as the testes are more temperature sensitive.[vii]
  • 2015 research published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction determined that low frequency electromagnetic fields long-term exposure significantly reduces sperm motility and testosterone levels.[viii]
  • 2018 research concluded that EMFs may induce oxidative stress with an increased level of reactive oxygen species, which may negatively affect sperm quality and may lead to infertility.[ix]

 Reducing Cell Phone Risk

As evidence mounts for the danger cellphone usage to the brain, many men have resorted to using radiation-free headsets with their phones stored in their pockets.  This is not a good idea, raising concerns of equally damaging responses to the gonads. The particular concerns are a focus on apoptosis of reproductive cells, fertility status, and serum reproductive hormones. It certainly raises concerns for cancer risk below the belt.

Clearly, we can take our phones out of our pockets to minimize exposure. When not in use, phones should be turned OFF or on airplane mode. If trying to conceive, avoid saunas and of course, do not place heat-source objects such as cellphone and laptops near your privates. READ MORE HERE.

If you must put your laptop on your lap, find a good radiation shield, or borrow your mates’ radiation-blocking belly blanket (good gift for her once pregnant).

However, food helps and it helps a lot. Eating fresh mint, blueberries, flax seed and other radio-protectors offer some protection. Supplements can also be helpful. Mixed tocopherols (such as those found in the right kind of vitamin E), carotenoids, melatonin, vitamin C, NAC, curcumin, resveratrol, and flavonoids such as soy, astragalus, apigenin, and propolis have been found to interrupt the inflammatory cascade initiated by EMFs and cellular radiation exposure. Reducing Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors Such as BPA

Use glass for storage instead of plastic dishes and plastic wrap. Do not touch cash register receipts. Use non-toxic cleaning and personal care items.

Detox plastics every day. Eat one or two servings daily of cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, arugula, Brussels sprouts) as they speed up detoxification. Supplements such as Indolplex and calcium d’ glucarate give detox an extra boost.

Beware of BPA-Free plastics. Importantly, bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are often used as a replacement for BPA, but so far studies show that they also significantly reduce testosterone levels.[x]

It is also wise to limit take-out food orders which are typically packaged in plastic dishes or in pizza boxes lined with PFAS, harmful chemicals found in non-stick cookware, fire retardants, dental floss, furniture, and water-proof and fire-protective clothing.

Your Health at Risk

An article written by Bryan Walsh, published in Newsweek, Male Infertility Crisis in U.S. Has Experts Baffled, presented powerful information on the topic of male fertility. Walsh detailed the various lifestyle choices and environmental toxins such as BPA that are dramatically reducing sperm counts. The eerie thing is that it appears that low sperm counts may lead to premature death, even among men in the prime of their lives who might seem otherwise healthy.

He quoted Hagai Levine, researcher at the Hebrew University and former chief epidemiologist for the Israel Defense Forces, “The constant production of new sperm cells makes semen highly sensitive to toxins and disease, making it an ideal surrogate for male health—’like blood pressure,’ as Louis puts it—beyond what it might signal for fertility. Poor sperm levels and infertility are a clear sign that men’s health is failing.

One 2015 study found that men diagnosed with infertility have a higher risk of developing health issues like heart disease, diabetes and alcohol abuse, while another connected infertility to cancer. ‘Semen quality isn’t just about a couple getting pregnant,’ says Louis. “There is increasing evidence at the population level that men with diminished semen quality die earlier and have more chronic diseases. This is as important to health as any disease state.

Sperm count decline is the canary in the coal mine says Levine. ‘There is something very wrong in the environment.’ Which means there may be something very wrong with men. “[xii]

While I do agree there is something very wrong in the environment, I don’t agree on the issue of direct increased risk of poor health, or that there is something very wrong with men. It is more likely a reflection of poor lifestyle habits and an accumulation of toxins that are affecting both sperm and overall health. EMFs , phthalates, and BPA clearly pose significant health risks. For example, phthalates deplete zinc, which could lead to conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and accelerated aging.

That said, it is important that everyone understands the seriousness of the accumulation of EMFs, plastics, and other toxins in the body. Your health depends on on avoiding and clearing your body of these toxins. I recommend everyone follow a detox protocol and use caution with cell phones and other EMF sources.

What You Can Do Now

  • Don’t smoke or take drugs (even over the counter can affect sperm quality)
  • Limit or avoid alcohol
  • Manage stress
  • Stay active, avoid sitting too long, and maintain a healthy weight
  • Stay cool; avoid saunas, tight clothing, and placing heat-source objects such as cell phones and laptops near your privates
  • Avoid exposure to pesticides, plastics, heavy metals, and other environmental toxins (which includes takeout containers, pizza boxes, and even most dental floss)
  • Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, radishes, etc), which help to detox plastics
  • Eat a colorful diet, full of fruits and vegetables
  • Consider Indolplex and calcium d’ glucarate, which detox plastic and other toxins (click on the links for brand recommendations)
  • Consider Bee Propolis, which contains the flavonoid chrysin, which is believed to block estrogen and increase testosterone; bee propolis also reduces the inflammatory response from EMF exposure

If you are looking forward to having children, I suggest you see your doctor. S/he will likely send you for a semen analysis. However, in order to get an accurate assessment, you may have to repeat the test several times. This can be expensive and time consuming (plus some men are less inclined to visit the doctor for fertility issues). There is an at-home test kit called TRAK, that men can use to evaluate their sperm levels.

Life is a journey, just be sure that journey is on-course for a healthy life.

Synthetic selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) such as tamoxifen and pharmaceutical aromatase inhibitors are often recommended for ER+ breast and other hormone-driven cancers, but they have significant adverse effects. Is it possible that natural plant products can perform the same function without the risks and damage of pharmaceuticals? Research says they can.

While estrogen plays many important beneficial roles in humans, the proliferation of ER+ breast cancer cells can sometimes be enhanced by estrogen (especially in the absence of progesterone), which may induce multiple processes involved in cell survival and cell cycle progression. Beyond the estrogen dominance that comes from a lack of progesterone, it is not necessarily our own estrogen at fault, but more likely xenoestrogens — the chemical estrogens, environmental hazards such as BPA and BPS — Bisphenol A and S.

However, to add clarity to the estrogen equation that oncologists speak of, the body has two different estrogen receptors, ERα (alpha) and ERβ (beta). ERα has a proliferative effect, and ERβ acts as a negative regulator of ERα in breast cancer cells, counteracting the proliferative effect of estrogens. Importantly, plant estrogens (phytoestrogens) preferentially interact with ERβ and display high specificity toward ERβ transactivation. Phytoestrogens, also known as phytochemicals, are synthesized from plants and vegetables. They show low estrogenic activity or anti-estrogenic activity with anti-proliferative effects that studies show offer nutraceutical alternatives to pharmaceutical anti-hormone therapies for various cancers.[ii]

For the men reading this article (including those with breast cancer), androgens and estrogens also influence the development and progression of prostate cancer. Research shows that phytoestrogens such as soy could be used alone or in conjunction with anti-hormone therapies for prostate cancer to target metabolic pathways involved in androgen and estrogen syntheses and epigenetic modifications of DNA to promote tumor-suppressor genes.[iv]

In a nutshell, phytoestrogens may be useful as substitutes for breast cancer treatments such as tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors, and could be extremely helpful for other hormone-related cancers.

The Role of Phytoestrogens as Replacements for SERMs and Aromatase Inhibitors

It is well-established that many foods and natural products have beneficial effects on ER+ breast cancer as well as other hormone-driven cancers.  Pytoestrogens are structurally similar to our own estrogen, but functionally are weakly estrogenic (weakly mimicking estrogen) or antiestrogenic (blocking estrogens’ effects). They have been researched extensively for their role in the interaction with estrogen receptors. The beauty is that they block the receptors from more volatile estrogens.  As such, they deserve consideration in preventive and therapeutic settings for the intervention of cancer initiation and progression.

Studies show that phytoestrogens may provide an alternative or complementary approach to anti-hormone treatments. For example, 2017 research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences cited many studies confirming that an important application of phytoestrogens is that they could be used as an alternative to the SERMs.[iii] In general, phytoestrogens act as aromatase inhibitors by decreasing aromatase gene expression and inhibiting the aromatase enzyme.   

Some of the more powerful phytoestrogens include flax and sesame seeds as well as whole soy. 

Flax and sesame seeds have anticancer, breast tumor-reducing effects. Both lignans are metabolized to estrogen-like enterodiol and enterolactone, and reduce cell proliferation and apoptosis.[xiv] While each works a bit differently, both may be useful as an effective adjuvant therapeutic agent against tumor development and progression, and therefore, could be used in the prevention and/or treatment of various types of cancer. Studies show that higher intakes of lignans such as flax and sesame seeds are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Flax seed works with tamoxifen to inhibit breast cancer tumor growth, so if you choose to take tamoxifen, know that you can also benefit from flax.  

I have written extensively on the benefits of flax seed, but to recap, a few of the benefits of flax are the following:

  • Decreases cell proliferation rates and inhibits tumor growth in ER+ cancers
  • Decreases angiogenesis (blood supply for tumors) and increases apoptosis (cancer cell death)
  • Influences ER-negative and ER-positive tumors by decreasing insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), HER2 and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which supports angiogenesis
  • Reduces growth and metastasis of ER-negative and triple negative breast cancers
  • Favorably influences tumor suppressor genes

Soy: Numerous studies indicate that genistein, the most abundant isoflavone present in soybeans, has anti-proliferative effects on various cancer cells, including prostate, ovarian, and breast. Like other phytoestrogens, genistein interferes with the effects of estradiol by binding to estrogen receptors. This is good as soy may also inhibit inflammation and boost anticancer immune responses, while other estrogens do not. The following are a few key findings of soy[v]:

  • Inhibits NF-kB activity in prostate, breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer cells. Nf-kB plays a crucial role in immune response, inflammation, cell growth and survival.
  • Selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor impeding angiogenesis, a major factor in cancer growth and proliferation. Tyrosine kinases play important roles in cell proliferation, survival, migration and differentiation are often altered in cancer cells, leading to malignancy
  • Induces cancer cell death (apoptosis) in several cancer cell lines, including prostate, ovarian, and breast cancer
  • Modulates EGF (epidermal growth factor) which has been implicated in the development and growth of many types of cancer cells
  • Long-term consumption seems to result in a decreased response to stimulation by estradiol[vi]

Please note that soy consumption is somewhat controversial. Please work with your coach or medical professional to see if soy consumption is right for you.

More Notable Phytoestrogens                                                                            parsley root

  • Apigenin is a natural flavonoid commonly found in fruits and vegetables such as parsley, celery, thyme, chamomile tea, and oranges. The chemical structure of apigenin is similar to estrogen and as such it mimics estrogen. 2107 research indicates that phytoestrogens such as apigenin and resveratrol have the therapeutic potential act like SERMs and could be considered in the development of therapeutics for breast cancer and brain disease.[vii] Extensive studies show that apigenin has potent antioxidant and anticancer activities in ER-positive and ER-negative breast cancer. Apigenin also inhibits proteasome, which certain cancer cells need for survival. By inhibiting proteasome, phytoestrogens such as apigenin induce apoptosis in prostate, breast, and many other cancer cell lines.[viii]
  • Pau d’ Arco exhibits selective anti-proliferative effects in carcinoma cell lines. A study performed at the Strang Cancer Prevention Center in New York found that the anti-proliferative effects of herbal medicines such as pau d’arco may correlate with down-regulated estrogen responsive genes and up-regulated apoptosis-specific genes. The researchers believe their data validates the need to prioritize efficacious herbal medicines and concluded that phytoestrogens such as pau d’arco may provide an alternative or complementary approach to endocrine therapy for breast cancer.[ix] Read more
  • Broccoli: The sulforaphane in broccoli (particularly in broccoli seeds and sprouts) has been found to inhibit proliferation and down-regulates hormone receptor expression in MCF-7 cells. Sulforaphane also passes the blood brain barrier and targets cancer stem cells. If you cannot find sprouts locally, I recommend a supplement.sprouts
  • Luteolin and Naringenin: Flavonoids, especially flavones such as luteolin and flavanones such as naringenin are potent aromatase inhibitors. [x] Luteolin has also been found to down-regulate aromatase gene expression. Luteolin is found in celery, thyme and chamomile tea. Some rich sources of naringenin include bergamot, grapefruit, tomatoes, and tart cherries.
  • Quercetin, found in abundance in food sources such as apples, onions, tea, and red wine, has been reported to have strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer effects. It has the ability bind at high affinity to estrogen receptors, resulting in inhibition of estrogen-regulated cell growth and proliferation[xi]
  • Hesperetin, found in citrus fruits and essentials oils, exerts it anticancer actions by inhibiting cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and by regulating aromatase activity and oxidative stress. Although hesperetin is unable to bind to ERs, it is effective in inhibiting cell proliferation of ER+ breast cancer and dramatically decreasing tumor size and other actions. Hesperetin has also been found to reduce serum estrogen levels and down-regulate estrogen target genes and estrogen metabolism-related genes.[xii]. Try putting a drop or two of lemon essential oil in your water, or grating the peel of an organic lemon.
  • Black seed contains thymoquinone, a phytochemical compound found in plant Nigella sativa. It has been found to initiate apoptosis, improve estrogen metabolism, and regulate signally pathways in breast cancer.
  • Vitamin E inhibits cell proliferation, down-regulates the expression of ERα, ERβ, COX-2, and serum estrogen levels (should always be mixed tocopherols, not just d-alpha.
  • Red Clover binds to estrogen receptors, inhibits cell proliferation, and initiates apoptosis in ER+ breast cancer cells.
  • Ellagic acid, a dietary flavonoid present in berries, grapes, pomegranates, and nuts, inhibits cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis in ER+ breast cancer cells.
  • Eugenol, a compound found in clove oil, inhibits cell proliferation and initiates cancer cell death in both ER+ and ER- breast cancers. Excitingly, one study done in Indonesia found that eugenol  is a potent ERa antagonist. The researchers indicate that not only does it work just like tamoxifen, but it may actually work even better.

Phytoestrogens can be our friends, but know that herbs are powerful. I have no concerns with food-based phytos, but do take care with extracts. They are best rotated so as to maximize benefits, reduce the chances of resistance, and avoid interactions. Drugs, of course, are often even more dangerous, yet are routinely prescribed.

I interviewed Peter Gøtsche, author of Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime, on my radio show a few years back. Amazing man, whose controversial views have since gotten him tossed from the Cochrane Collaboration, which he co-founded. Sadly, there are many who wish to silence the voices who speak against Big Pharma.

Like me, Gøtsche worries that most people let their doctors make the decisions for them, but the evidence tells us that we should be cautious. He is a strong advocate for the avoidance of drugs and while not against medical interventions, believes one can not just blindly follow the orders of the medical community.

Notably, there is tremendous variability in the metabolic processing of phytoestrogens and pharmacological drugs, thus establishing the difficulty and complexity of this topic. The bottom line is that it extremely important that one understand that it may not make logical sense to attempt to poison one’s way back to health. Certainly drug therapies have worked for many. That said, NO ONE was every born tamoxifen or AI deficient, but over time we may become estrogen dominant, increasing our risk for cancer. It behooves us all to do our research and decide for ourselves whether drugs or holistic remedies are best, or even a combination of both.  

Estrogen plays many important roles in humans, so it may not make sense to arbitrarily take it away. If you are estrogen dominant (meaning out of balance with progesterone), you may want to consider a bio-identical progesterone cream (I like that one as it is paraben-free, soy-free, and Non GMO).

Could the Natural Alternative to Tamoxifen and Aromatase Inhibitors be in Your Refrigerator? Part I

Estrogen play an important role in overall health in humans—it protects your heart, lungs, eyes, brain, bones, skin, and hair, averts cognitive decline, and does so much more. Estrogen is also protective against adverse symptoms during the peri-and postmenopausal periods. But estrogens are known to stimulate cellular proliferation associated with certain cancers. Hence, if you have been diagnosed with a hormone-related cancer, your doctor may advise a synthetic selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) such as tamoxifen or a pharmaceutical aromatase inhibitor such as Femara (letrozole), Arimidex (anastrozole), or Aromasin (exemestane).

Of course, these pharmaceutical drugs come with a host of detrimental side effects. What’s a person to do?

Side Effects and Resulting Effects of Pharmaceutical Anti-Hormone Drugs

pills tamoxifenSome side effects of tamoxifen include severe muscle pain, weight gain, thickening of endometrial lining of the uterus, daytime sleepiness, nausea, edema, hot flashes, vaginal hemorrhage, increased risk of cataracts, acute glaucoma, and other eye issues. It is not recommended to take tamoxifen if you have impaired CYP2D6 enzyme, nor should you take medications that block the activity of CYP2D6, such as Benadryl, Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft (these lists are not inclusive) during treatment. Tamoxifen has been declared a human carcinogen by the WHO, NIH and other authorities.

Side effects of aromatase inhibitors include damage to the heart, never-ending flu-like symptoms, hair thinning and loss, joint pain, stiffness and swelling, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and headaches, a feeling of tiredness and lethargy, difficulty breathing, nails breaking down and peeling, memory fog, depression and mood swings, balance problems, sleep disorders, tightness of the chest, bone thinning, and more.

In the summer edition of Cure magazine, they spoke of a doctor who when asked why he didn’t tell his patient about the side effects of the prescribed hormonal therapy, replied “some women would not take the pill if they knew bout the side effects”. Incidentally, these were not listed on the medical paper that came with her bill.

Clinical trials have indicated that resistance develops with both tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. This is another major pharmaceutical problem and cause of serious concern to clinicians and patients.

So, again what exactly is a person to do?

The easiest and most logical answer is to eat copious amounts of phytoestrogens throughout the day.

Phytoestrogens are plant-derived naturally occurring compounds that have chemical structures similar to estrogens. Phytoestrogens have been found to decrease cancer risk by inhibiting aromatase activity and CYP19 gene expression (The aromatase enzyme is a product of the CYP19A1 gene).

Aromatase plays an important role in breast cancer as it converts androgens to estrogens in many human tissues, the result of which has been known to stimulate cellular proliferation in certain cancers. In the vast majority of breast cancers, estrogen levels play a role tumor growth and depend on the activity of CYP19.

Research performed in 2015 by the Department of Physiology and Developmental Biology and The Neuroscience Center at Brigham Young University, indicates that phytoestrogens act as aromatase inhibitors by decreasing aromatase gene expression and inhibiting the aromatase enzyme. Their findings emphasize that estrogens have a significant impact on health and that phytoestrogens (being of similar structure to 17β-estradiol) have strong potential as anticancer agents.[i]

The researchers concluded that phytoestrogens not only act as SERMs (as has been previously reported and I will get into in Part II of this post), but also have the ability to alter the activity of the aromatase enzyme. They go on to remind us that the inhibition of aromatase activity and gene expression represents a key mechanism of how phytoestrogens may contribute to decreased cancer risk and recurrence.

The important difference is that phytoestrogens do not initiate the cascade of negative effects of pharmaceutical drugs and as estrogen modulators, may stave off the negative effects of declining estrogen, making them effective in more ways than one. Further, unlike drugs, they offer significant cancer-fighting abilities. For example, the apigenin in parsley is known not only for its aromatase-inhibiting abilities, but also for promoting cancer cell death, including cancer stem cells. parsley

In Part II of this post I will discuss many different phytoestrogens—all of which play a significant roll in the management of hormone-related cancers. In the meantime, a few of my favorites are flax and sesame seeds, broccoli sprouts, including the seeds (sulforaphane), parsley (apigenin), and organic whole soy.

However, as a strong reminder, estrogen is not the biggest driver of cancer, at least not your own estrogen. Emotional and environmental toxins (including xenoestrogens such as BPA and BPS) are often at the root of it all, as well as the viral factor—it is imperative that you resolve these issues as well as anything that may have contributed to your cancerous environment.

Importantly, it is not always wise or even necessary to reduce estrogen (many post-menopausal women already suffer from low estrogen). This is especially true for very thin women as post-menopause, estrogen is no longer made in the ovaries, but rather from adipose tissue (fat, especially in the breasts and belly), of which they may have very little. (This is also why many doctors advise their patients to lose weight, if necessary). Thin women might benefit more by raising progesterone. Pau d’arco for Breast, Prostate, Colon, and Other Cancers

Pau d’arco, also known as Taheebo, is extracted from the inner bark of several species of Tabebuia trees that grow in Central and South America. The medicinal uses of Pau d’arco (PDA) date back to 1873.  PDA has been used in South America to treat a wide range of conditions, including pain, ulcers, arthritis, fever, prostatitis, Candida, osteoarthritis, cough, influenza, herpes, diabetes, ulcers, warts, infections, allergies, and even cancer, particularly cancers of the breast, colon, lung, prostate, and malignant melanoma.

What the Docs Have to Say

Dr. James Duke of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Dr. Norman Fransworth of the University of Illinois have reported PDA contains active substances (such as β-lapachone and lapacho) found to be highly effective against various cancers. Dr Paulo Martin, a Brazilian medical researcher, reported that PDA has powerful antibiotic, virus and cancer-killing properties.[i] The late integrative oncologist Dr. Mitch Gaynor also used Pau d’arco with his cancer patients.

What the Studies Say

Scientists have discovered that compounds in PDA called naphthoquinones (mainly lapachol and beta-lapachone) are the reason for these impressive healing abilities. PDA also contains a significant amount of the antioxidant quercetin, which has been found to inhibit growth of cancer cells, including cancer stem cells. Some of the exciting cancer research on PDA:

  • Exhibits selective anti-proliferative effects in carcinoma cell lines, including ER+MCF-7 breast cancer cells[ii]
  • Inhibits the growth of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cells and activates cancer-fighting genes[iii]
  • May block estrogen receptors [much like the SERM tamoxifen] as it is a powerful phytoestrogen [iv]
  • Effective against some bacteria, fungi, viruses (including Epstein Barr), and parasites that may be involved in cancerous processes
  • Induces cell death in prostate cancer lines[v]
  • Induces apoptosis independent of P53 expression; notably, over-expression of bcl2, a contributor for a number of cancers – including melanoma, breast, prostate, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and lung cancer, does not appear to inhibit the  B-lapachone in PDA[vi]
  • Inhibits angiogenesis, the ability of tumors to make new blood vessels in prostate and other cancers[vii]
  • Suppresses the growth and angiogenesis of lung cancer[viii]
  • Inhibits the growth of cancer in a wide range of cancers, such as breast, prostate, cervical, liver, lung, and colon* (see Quercetin below)
  • Appears to increase the effectiveness of chemo and decreases side effects

Research also shows that the lapachol in PDA may have the ability to stimulate the production of red blood cells in bone marrow, which could be helpful for those with low red blood cell counts (RBC). Pau d’arco is also thought to eliminate toxins in the body and purify the blood.

Daily Consumption of Flavonoid-Rich Foods Protects Against Cancer and Heart Disease

Recent research conducted at Edith Cowan University found that people who eat moderate to high amounts of flavonoid-rich foods are less likely to die from cancer or heart disease.[i]

blueberries and walnutsFlavonoids are one of the reasons why it is so important to consume a diet full of colorful vegetables and fruits. (They also improve the efficacy of chemo and help protect you during radiation). As reported at the 2012 Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City by Dr Lise Alschuler, ND., F.A.B.N.O., and author of The Definitive Guide to Thriving After Cancer: A Five-Step Integrative Plan to Reduce the Risk of Recurrence and Build Lifelong Healthflavonoids exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune modulating, hormone balancing, blood sugar stabilizing, and cancer preventive effects. Importantly, you need to eat them every meal, as the effects only last for about 1-4 hours.

Flavonoids have also been shown to interrupt the inflammatory cascade initiated by EMF and Cellular Radiation Exposure. This is especially important with the rollout of 5G. (You may wish to read my article What You Need to Know About 5G: It’s Here!)

The dramatic results in the Edwith Cowan Study seem to be the strongest for those who drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, both of which increase inflammation and damage blood vessels.  The best thing one can do is to quit smoking, limit alcohol, and consume a wide variety of flavonoid-rich foods daily. Studies show that smokers who eat plenty of vegetables and drink tea and red wine (but limit that too) substantially reduce their risk for cancer.  So, while you are trying to quit smoking, have some broccoli or a glass of wine with that cigarette.  However, this does not give you permission to continue smoking. If you drink alcohol regularly, please know there are some things that help mitigate the damages of alcohol consumption (but again, work on reducing consumption).

The Institute for Natural Healing provides the following recap for the Edith Cowan University study:

Dr. Nicola Bondonno, the lead researcher in the study, recommends this combination of flavonoid-rich foods and drinks in a daily diet:

  • One cup of green tea (not decaf)    apples
  • One orange
  • One apple
  • 3 ½ ounces of blueberries
  • 3 ½ ounces of broccoli (or a small handful of broccoli sprouts)

Combined, they provide a wide range of different flavonoid compounds and over 500 mg of total flavonoids. The study found that people who consumed around 500 mg of flavonoids daily had the lowest cancer and heart disease risk.

It can get monotonous to eat the same foods every day. The following are more food choices, grouped by the type of flavonoids they contain. Choose one or two from each type to eat daily for maximum benefits:

  • Flavonones: Grapefruits, lemons, tomatoes
  • Anthocyanidins: Strawberries, pears, cabbage, garbanzo beans, cherries, red wine
  • Flavones: Hot peppers, celery, watermelon, parsley, cantaloupe
  • Flavonols: Romaine lettuce, almonds, quinoa, sweet potatoes
  • Flavanols: Dark chocolate, fava beans, grapes, white tea

broccoli-sproutsThe bottom line is it is beneficial for everyone to eat copious amounts of flavonoid-rich fruits and vegetables daily, and to consume a wide variety.

Could Aromatase Inhibitors Actually Increase One’s Risk for Breast Cancer?

Most oncologists recommend estrogen blockers or aromatase inhibitors for those with hormone-sensitive cancers. However, new research shows that decreased estrogen levels can promote insulin resistance, which may actually increase the risk of cancer of the breast, endometrium, and ovaries. 

To recap from my previous post, What You Need to Know About Sugar and Breast Cancer, insulin resistance leads to increased insulin in the body. High insulin triggers breast cancer cells to divide and grow.

After menopause many women face a dramatic increase in insulin resistance (and start noticing belly fat that wasn’t there before). Declining estrogen is considered to be the reason.[i] If decreased estrogen promotes insulin resistance, could intentionally reducing estrogen increase one’s risk of breast cancer? Can aromatase inhibitors actually promote breast cancer? Research shows they just might.

Decreased Estrogen Levels Promote Insulin Resistance

Studies (both clinical and animal) have shown a strong correlation between circulating estrogen deficiency and insulin resistance. At Texas A&M, a team lead by Dr. Shaodong Guo identified that decreased serum estrogen levels promote insulin resistance and that even a slight decrease in circulatory estrogen levels is associated with resistance and may increase the risk of cancer of the breast, endometrium, and ovaries. The researchers found that “for premenopausal women, even a slight decrease in their circulatory estrogen levels associated with insulin resistance may increase the risk for cancers, particularly in the organs having high estrogen demand (breast, endometrium and ovary). On the other hand, postmenopausal state with profound estrogen deficiency confers high risk for cancers in different organs with either high or moderate estrogen demand.”[ii]

According to the Guo, the lead investigator for the Texas A&M study, estrogen deficiency or impaired estrogen signaling is associated with insulin resistance. “Studies have shown the reduction of estrogen in postmenopausal women accelerates the development of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.” He further explains that estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women can reduce insulin resistance. “Clinical trials of estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women have demonstrated a lowered insulin resistance as well as reductions in plasma glucose levels.”

2015 research published in the Journal or Diabetes Research also concluded that the loss of circulating estrogen E2 and impairment of its cellular activity can lead to an abrupt reduction in metabolic rate and that E2 replacement is preventive. “It is very clear that E2 has tremendous potential as a therapeutic against diabetes and its associated complications, but it has to be administered in a safer form and personalized to individual needs”. [iii]  While the link between synthetic HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and breast cancer has been established and therefore may not be an option, it  just doesn’t make sense to intentionally lower our own already-declining natural estrogen.

Many women choose bio-identical hormones, but to be clear, bios are not ‘natural’, they are chemically constructed in a lab. According to Dr Mache Seibel, M.D., author of The Estrogen Window, you have to be careful with compounded bio-identicals. He says that studies show that despite the fact that the prescription may be filled correctly, typically progesterone tends to be 60-80% lower than ordered and estrogen 80-200% higher than ordered which can result in increased estrogen dominance and could raise your risk of hormone-driven cancer. He also points out the serious risks of declining estrogen, which include increasing your risk of heart disease by 30% and dementia 70%. 

Why You Need Estrogen 

We need estrogen for aiding in the prevention of heart disease and for strong, healthy bones. In fact, estrogen is essential to the health of all parts of your body, from your eyes to your heart to your brain to everywhere else.  Estrogen also improves body fat distribution and B-cell function, and reduces inflammation. And of course, estrogen increases insulin sensitivity (and thus is protective against diabetes and metabolic syndrome predisposing one to obesity) and conversely, low estrogen levels can lead to increased insulin resistance or impaired insulin activity.

Given that studies show that the reduction of estrogen in postmenopausal women accelerates the development of insulin resistance and thus could promote breast cancer, it is hard to believe that aromatase inhibitors are always a good idea. Perhaps ‘prescribing’ phytoestrogens such as flax and sesame seeds, herbs, and even perhaps whole soy, would be a better tactic. Phytoestrogens are plant-based weak estrogens which bind to estrogen receptors in the body (just like tamoxifen) and through competitive inhibition, can prevent the receptor-binding of more potent estrogens (including xenoestrogen such as BPA). Phytoestrogens also promote hormone balance and homeostasis. One can also take steps to raise progesterone to balance natural estrogens by taking supplements such as zinc and vitamin E, lowering stress, and using an over-the-counter progesterone cream. I will further address the role of phytoestrogens and hormone-driven cancers in my next post.

Natural Aromatase Inhibitors

Some natural substances and formulas that reduce aromatase activity (should you need to reduce aromatase activity or improve estrogen metabolism or hormone balance) include Calcium d Glucarate, which helps clear excess estrogen and chemical estrogens from the body, and a product known as Aromastat, which contains a blend of herbal ingredients that work together to help keep your natural hormones balanced.  Aromastat contains chamomile (apigenin), chrystin, daidzein, genistein, indole-3-carbinol, and glycitein (it does contain soy isolates, so if avoiding, look for these ingredients individually, although in the case of genistein, I prefer you eat organic whole soy). Cancer loves sugar, we all know that – sugar feeds cancer and suppresses the immune system. The effects of each dose can last for 5-6 hours. The more sugar we eat, the faster cancer cells can grow. But do you know why sugar happens to love breast cancer?

Cells require sugar for energy, but it needs help to get into the cells. Insulin is the helper that attaches to and signals cells to absorb sugar from the bloodstream. Food sources that boost insulin production and regulate blood sugar levels include red cabbage, sweet potatoes, fenugreek seeds, curcumin, blueberries, vitamin D, and Ceylon cinnamon (so please continue to eat them). However, consuming sugar (sweets, pasta, and many bread, including whole wheat) raises blood sugar levels quickly. The pancreas responds to this by pumping out insulin to lower blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to decreased insulin sensitivity. When this happens, the body begins to ignore the signal to take glucose out of the bloodstream and put it into our cells. This triggers the body to start producing even more insulin. The more insulin, the more circulating estrogen there is to stimulate breast cancer cells.

     Sugar spikes insulin levels. Insulin regulates how much estrogen is available to stimulate breast cells. The more sugar you consume, the higher your circulating estrogen levels.

In the Fall 2019 issue of Breast Cancer Wellness there is an excellent article on sugar and its connection to estrogen, written by Dr Christine Horner, M.D. According to Horner, sugar “attacks a portion of the estrogen cycle, making more estrogen available to attach to the estrogen receptors in breast tissue. Insulin regulates how much of the estrogen in your blood is available to attach to estrogen receptors in your breast tissue. When estrogen travels in the blood, it either travels alone seeking a mate (an estrogen receptor), or it travels with a partner (a protein binder) that prevents it from attaching to an estrogen receptor. Insulin regulates the number of protein binders in the blood. So, the higher your insulin levels are, the fewer the number of protein binders there will be and therefore the more free estrogen that will be available to attach to estrogen receptors.  In other words, when your insulin levels are up, free-estrogen levels are up too. And both of them speed up cell division. That’s why high insulin levels increase your risk of breast cancer so much.” She further explains that “when insulin attaches to its receptor, it has the same effect as when estrogen attaches to its receptor; it causes cells to start dividing. The higher your insulin levels are, the faster your breast cells will divide; the faster they divide, the higher your risk of breast cancer is and the faster any existing cancer cells will grow.”

Addressing Estrogen Receptors with SERMS

To address estrogen receptor positive cancers, oncologists often recommend SERMS (selective receptor modulators) such as tamoxifen. However, tamoxifen is a carcinogenic drug that comes with significant side effects, including an increased risk of cancer.

Research shows that phytoestrogens,  plant-derived estrogens that can actually cause anti-estrogenic effects by binding to estrogen receptors (much like tamoxifen), might be worthy of consideration. The potential effects of dietary phytoestrogens have been studied to lower the risk of menopausal symptoms, cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, brain function disorders, and cancers of the breast, ovaries, endometrium, prostate, and other cancers

I will address the role of phytoestrogens as holistic selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS vs Tamoxifen) in a subsequent post.  I will also address the question of ‘do aromatase inhibitors actually increase your risk of breast or other cancers?’. What You Need to Know About 5G: It’s Here!

5G…It’s Coming, It’s Already Here. It’s Not Going Away! is the title of an article in the September edition of Dental Truth. The article contains an interview with William Cadwallader, a Certified Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist, and author of Exposed: The Electronic Sickening of America and How to Protect Yourself – Includes Dangers of 5G & Smart Devices . In the interview Cadwallader explains 5G (the fifth-generation cellular network technology) and the dangers of electromagnetic radiation frequencies (EMFs).

The new type of higher microwave frequency in 5G is not entirely new, as it is used in medicine and in airport security, but it is new for widespread, unavoidable, continuous general public exposure.

To summarize the interview, Cadwallader talks about how the cell phone industry is installing over two million small cells throughout the United States. The CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association) claims we as a nation must “do everything we can to maintain our wireless leadership.” While that might sound interesting, it does not take into consideration the potential serious health effects of 5G.

Cadwallader points out that in September 2017, more than 180 scientists and doctors from 36 countries appealed to the EU for a 5G moratorium and asserted that: “5G will substantially increase exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on top of the 2G, 3g,4G, Wi-Fi, etc. for telecommunications already in place. RR-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.”

Unfortunately, the appeal was ignored and the roll-out in Europe and the US began. 5G will be everywhere, on every block in every city, and there will be no way to avoid it.

EMFs have been found to damage DNA and compromise the blood brain barrier (BBB). According to Cadwallader, according to studies done in 2008 and 2012, “The permeability of the BBB is increased resulting in dangerous chemicals and heavy metals that were never intended to enter the brain now having access”. EMFs also weaken the immune system and do so much more. The non-ionizing radiation in wireless radiation interferes with oxidative repair mechanisms, creating oxidative stress and altering DNA which can lead to cancer. To read more about the dangers, please visit my post Why EMF Exposure is a BIG DEAL and my other articles listed below.

How to Protect Yourself from 5G 

As one cannot escape the growing presence of EMFs and because it is impossible to function in the world without technology, it is important to take measures to reduce exposure. I speak of many of these in my posts (see below), but here are some of Cadwallader’s recommendations:

  1. Move all electronic devices as far away as possible at night (radiation travels through the air, from wires, and through walls)
  2. Always use speaker phone (your phone is always trying to connect to a cell tower)
  3. Turn OFF Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and turn on Airplane Mode when carrying your devices. Never use a Bluetooth wireless ear piece or headphones (they generate radiation even when not on a call or playing music)
  4. Remove any Wi-Fi router from your bedroom and living areas and if possible, turn it OFF at night if it is in your home office
  5. Hard-wire everything you can, including your printer, computer, keyboard, etc.
  6. Replace cordless phones with corded land-line phones
  7. Turn on Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth OFF when you don’t need an internet connection
  8. Leave the room IF you use a microwave oven or better  yet, get rid of it
  9. Avoid using portable devices on your lap and turn all electronics off when not in use

In my previous posts (see below) I list various foods, supplements, and products that can help offset some of the risks of EMFs. Two more reputable products that I have come across are SafeSleeve anti-radiation cases for your phone and Lambs radiation-proof and anti-EMF underwear to protect your privates and testosterone levels (as featured in Mens’s Health, Forbes, GQ, and more). You may laugh at that one, but it is important to protect your privates (and ladies, need I remind you to keep your phone out of your bra and pockets? Lambs for ladies coming soon). In 2012 when I heard Dr Devra Davis, PhD, author of Disconnect: The Truth about Cell Phone Radiation, speak about the dangers of cellphones (I then interviewed her on my radio show as well as Lloyd Burrell, another EMF expert), she spoke of how in Israel they have signs over urinals reminding men not to carry their cellphones in their front pants pockets. The goal of the sign was to protect fertility, but it applies for so many reasons. Her book sold out completely at the conference, attended mostly by fellow PhD’s and medical doctors, and nurses. There are some good studies on the  SafeSleeve and Lambs sites as well as information on the dangers associated with wireless radiation. lambs
