Survive Cancer and Live Well

ej pink twoSo I am feeling a bit sleep deprived and feisty this morning so bear with me.  A few weekends ago I was in the car and heard a commercial by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).  They had the gall to copy my motto. They claim that they not only want to you to survive, but to live as well.  First of all, that is pretty ironic, but I’ll get to that in a minute.  However, they left out a very important part.  I named my radio show Survive and Live Well.  The reason being that I believe that we don’t just want to treat cancer, we want to beat cancer, survive, and live well.  They only want you to live as well. Not as well as you did before, or better, just that you don’t die from the treatment (which many do). Perhaps it’s okay with them if you suffer from the treatments for the rest of your life as long as you walk out alive.

What MSKCC and most other cancer centers don’t take into consideration is the need to protect healthy cells from damage.  Chemotherapy and radiation are incredibly damaging treatments. They harm the lungs, heart, and more–much  of which is life-threatening and most of which is quality of life-threatening.  For example, very often a patient will develop peripheral neuropathy—be it mild or severe, which can dramatically affect one’s quality of life.  This is really unacceptable as these side effects can often be prevented or at least minimized. Important to know, chemo and radiation kill some cells (healthy and cancerous), but not cancer stem cells. They also make the cancer stem cells more aggressive, leading to metastases (oh yeah, they forget to tell you that too). Read more here.

So here is my beef with them copying my motto.  Perhaps they left off the well as this clearly is not important to them.  If it were, they would have a real integrative department.  They seem to miss the point.  They are good researchers; they know that supplementation during treatment is effective.  They know there is much that can be done to mitigate risks and improve the efficacy of treatment.  However, their oncologists do not understand this—why aren’t they trained in integrative medicine?  I ask myself how this can be.  Sure, they hang a shingle on a door that says they have offer integrative services, but it is a farce.  What they offer is complementary medicine, which is used along with conventional treatments to help with the side effects—meaning it will make you feel better.  Integrative or adjunctive means offering things that increase the efficacy and safety of treatment or procedures.

Many of my clients have been permanently harmed by this misconception—from there and treatment centers around the world. They come to me for remedies for the effects.  I will say this right now…prevention is far easier then reversal, and in fact, most often, the damage is not reversible.

Furthermore, many, if not most, of my clients have not had their vitamin D level or CRP levels checked by their oncologist (not to mention cancer markers).  This spells ignorance at best, negligence in actuality.  How could an oncologist not request these labs? These two tests provide critical information for resolving some of the causes of cancer. For whatever reason, most oncologists just do not focus on the cause of one’s cancer, only to slash, poison, and burn away the symptoms.

Numerous studies have linked Vitamin D deficiency to the development of cancer. Science has found that most tumors have receptors for Vitamin D. Cancer cells were once healthy cells that became damaged in some way. When D latches onto those receptors, it differentiates that cell, which can slow down or stop the growth of that cell and help it revert back to a normal cell.

Even when oncologists run the D test, they are often off base with the new recommendations for healthy levels. Listen to my discussion with Dr Michael Schachter on the role of Vitamin D in Cancer.

CRP stands for C – reactive protein, which measures inflammation within the body. Inflammation is the precursor to cancer, it is a driver of cancer. If the number if found to be high, measures can be taken to remedy the problem. The trick is knowing that you need to remedy the problem–in other words, if they don’t test  you, you don’t know.

If you are considering conventional treatments, please do not accept them unless your cancer center, and oncologist in particular, is knowledgeable on the subject and implements integrative measures during treatment. There is a plethora of research showing that integrative measures work and are safe.  For more on that please read Is it Safe to Take Antioxidants and Other Natural Agents During Chemo and Radiation.  And please, work with a coach who can help you to resolve the reasons for your cancer–until those are resolved, will will not achieve true health.

It is nearly impossible to heal from cancer on a long-term basis if you do not take steps to resolve the reason for your cancer.  Do not be misled that ‘cancer just happens’ or that ‘sometimes good cells go bad’.  While yes, the later might be true, it would be a mighty good idea to get your genes to behave—and this can be done.  But that is a story for another day.

How Unresolved Trauma Causes Cancer

Genetic, environmental, nutritional and psychological factors all play a role in the development of cancer.  To heal from our cancer we must address the issues which have stressed the body’s ability to fight cancer, and we have to change the cancer terrain to one that is unfriendly to cancer. A few years ago, I wrote a post on this, Changing the Cancer Environment. By now, most of us are aware of the genetic, environmental and nutritional links to cancer and most of us are aware of the physiological damage of stress. However, not many are aware that, quite often, a biological conflict from our past or present is actually the root cause of our cancer.

Dr Ryke Geerd Hamer, a German physician and surgeon, has done considerable work in the field of psychosomatic cancer therapy. While somewhat controversial, Hamer believes that cancer occurs when the individual suppresses for long periods toxic negative emotions (primarily anger, hate, resentment and grief). This creates cell changes within the body leading to cancer.  Dr Hamer examined some 20,000 cancer patients with all types of cancer and discovered that every cancer in the body has a different emotional cause. For example, colon cancer relates to repressed anger and resentment (usually since childhood, but generally spanning many years). Cancers of the left breast are caused by the individual experiencing an emotional conflict involving the child, home or mother; whereas cancers of the right breast are caused by the individual experiencing an emotional conflict with a partner, boss or others. A woman who presents with cancer in the left breast invariably reveals an emotional or traumatic event from childhood, whereas those with cancer on the right speak of an abusive or overly controlling spouse or boss. There is always the Ah-ha moment when a client looks at you and says “yep, that’s me”, and this applies to cancers across the board. So much of healing comes from inside, by healing past hurts or turning inward to intuition. It is therefore critical to uncover and release these toxic negative emotions (or relationships) in order to heal from cancer.

Hamer also suggests that metastasis is not the original cancer spreading. He believes metastases are the result of new conflicts that may well be brought on by the very stress of having cancer of invasive, painful, or nauseating therapies. Hamer has faced much criticism within the conventional medical community, but it is largely because he clearly believes that the current methods of treating cancer are barbaric and completely ineffective long-term (can’t argue with that). Even though the psychosomatic connection with cancer is not generally accepted, the idea that such connections exist is not a new or revolutionary one. Recent research in Germany, Austria, France, the US and Denmark has confirmed Dr. Hamer’s findings; that emotional conflicts create cancer, and solving the conflicts in question stops the cancer growth. However, while it is true that if the mind is sick, the body cannot heal, we cannot simply just resolve our conflict. The initiation and progression of cancer involves a variety of complex contributing factors, involving not just the cancer of the patient, but the patient with the cancer. Therefore, there is no one “magic bullet” whether conventional or alternative in nature that can defeat cancer– we each need a personalized, comprehensive plan, inclusive of healing the whole person.

Conventional medicine has its place.  But, most oncologists are still using only the tools in their medical toolbox; while these tools may halt cancer in the beginning, they do nothing to stop it from returning, and may, in fact, encourage more cancer.  If your conventional oncologist had and used all the tools required to heal you, we would have won the war Nixon declared on cancer in 1971.  We are still dying from cancer.  Since he/she does not have all the answers, my hope is that you will consult with an integrative oncologist, a holistic or alternative healer, or a naturopathic doctor who specializes in oncology–a coach can be quite helpful with this as well. When conventional medicine is used judiciously and with proper caution and support, it can often be effective; used alone it will put you at higher risk for complications, side effects and an early demise.

After all, while we want to survive our cancer, we don’t want to suffer from or die from the treatment–the worst but all too common side effect of cancer treatment is death. I know that sounds harsh, but please know that there are options, both complementary and alternative that can be helpful–therapies that support and help protect the body during treatment, improve the efficacy of treatment or can be the treatment.  No matter what path you take, healing cancer requires more than what modern medicine has to offer.

Psychosomatic cancer therapy (healing from our trauma) is just one of the important tools that exist beyond the white coat. We still need to boost our immune system, fortify our body, detoxify,  restore, employ nutrition and supplementation, and will likely need to incorporate at least one type of cancer treatment, be it conventional or alternative.

Cancer patients who take control of their health are different from most other patients. They empower themselves by saying “this is what I am doing to beat cancer”, not “this is what they are doing to me”, and they play an active part in resolving how and why the disease occurred. They think of themselves as a ‘person with cancer’ rather than a ‘cancer patient’, and they enter into active co-treatment of themselves.

Breast Cancer Nutrition, Cancer Coach’s Tips–Video with Elyn Jacobs

Elyn Jacobs: I have three tips for you on eating to beat cancer. First let me say that nutrition matters. Dietary habits play a significant role in the prevention of breast cancer, the prevention of recurrence and slowing the progression of the disease.

Good nutrition will also support your body during damaging cancer treatments and will help you heal. That said, I’d like to suggest the 80/20 rule. So before you tell me, “No, I am not giving up my dessert or my meat”, remember, you don’t have to be perfect. Just try to eat well 80% of the time.

I also know that during cancer treatments, some foods may be very unappealing to you. So just do your best and try to avoid things like Ensure, because your body really doesn’t need the chemicals. Look for real foods.

So here are my tips:

Tip #1, Eat at least 15 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and try to include at least 10 different varieties. You also want to look for colors of the rainbow as each provides different cancer-fighting components.

Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet will also help you avoid the constipation that can come with many cancer treatments. If you find that you cannot or do not get enough produce, there are many whole food supplements out there that can help you bridge the gap between good intentions and reality.

Tip #2, Limit dairy products, meat and eggs as they can cause cancer-friendly inflammation in the body. They also add unnecessary hormones that you don’t need. You might want to consider limiting peanut butter too as that is also a pro-inflammatory food.

Tip #3, Cut out processed, fried, and fast foods, and eliminate as much sugar and refined grains as possible. You also want to try and stick to as much organic produce as you can, especially for those that are on the so-called ‘dirty dozen’, which by the way should now be the ‘dirty baker’s dozen’ because when they added blueberries they got up to number 13.

Produce, Your Body’s Best Friend

So it is a new year….a new start or at least a good reason to take a good look at your habits.  Do you exercise, eat at least 10-15 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and include a wide variety?  The cellular level is where cancer begins and where nutrition exerts its biggest effect. Healthy cells are your body’s front-line defense against oxidative stress, and fruits and vegetables provide the antioxidants needed for healthy cell performance. I’ll even be so bold as to say that produce can often trump triggers such as environmental toxins, and can help protect you if you have a genetic predisposition to cancer.  Consider that not all smokers get lung cancer.  Could it be that the healthy body is capable of putting up a strong defense against the toxic effects of smoking?  Yes.  (Now don’t go back to smoking…this was just an example). I try to juice every morning.  My recipe, with some variation depending on what I have on hand: kale, apple, parsnip, broccoli, fennel, carrot, parsley, celery, cauliflower and cilantro.

 When I am just about finished drinking it, I mix in some superfood powders like black raspberry, black cherry and pomegranate, all powerful anticancer foods, but difficult to include in the daily diet.   I also try to eat at least 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day in addition to the juice. However, despite my dedication, I often find I don’t have the time to juice or am traveling, and juice or even healthfully prepared produce is next to impossible to find.  Keep in mind that overcooking and microwaving foods destroys most of the nutrients in them.  So, I strongly recommend adding supplements to your diet in the form of dried powders (think Barleans or Completely Green and other similar brands).  However, on a recent flight to Canada, I was stopped by security; agent was certain that my mix of superfoods looked ominous.   Thankfully his litmus test proved otherwise, but I didn’t really appreciate my breakfast being manhandled, and my belongings interfered with.  So, I decided to look into Juice Plus, which offers a few blends of fruits and vegetables in easy-to- travel-with capsules.  Great for the road, perfect for busy days, and a must for those who just don’t get around to eating their veges. Watercress offers a hefty dose of beta-carotene, copious amounts of calcium, and carotenes like lutein.  Watercress has a high amount of phenylethylisotiocyante which appears to block cancer-causing chemicals, perhaps even protecting the lungs of smokers from the carcinogens associated with tobacco (however, again, please don’t smoke…I tell you this to understand the power of watercress…it’s reach is far beyond lung cancer)

Today is also a great day to get the kids to start craving vegetables.  Fruits are often loved by children, but for many, vegetables are not welcome.  I offer one slightly controversial solution.  Mindless eating:  while normally this is frowned upon and leads to obesity, I challenge you to put out a plate of raw veges where your young kids are playing…it will be empty in no-time.  I started this when the boys were very young, now all I hear is “more snack mom!”….and it is cut veges that they are yelling for.   Too late you say?  Please try it, but if it doesn’t work for your crowd, consider Juice Plus for them too, at least they will get the nutrients, and hopefully it will inspire them to give veges a chance….and it will give them a hefty dose of vegetables when you travel or are short on time, or patience.  Now, anyone have a great way to get kids to eat beans?
