Metatrol: Integrative Support to Improve the Treatment of Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Cancer, chemotherapy, Integrative Oncology, nutraceuticals, Radiotherapy for breast cancer on April 29, 2024 at 7:52 am

Fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) is a natural compound derived from fermentation of wheat germ. FWGE is a promising anticancer compound that can be integrated into or improve the current treatment of cancer. It is widely used in cancer treatment as it has been found to protect healthy cells from radiation and starve cancer cells of their nutrition. Research shows that various types of cancer cells treated with FWGE have responded with cytotoxic effects, alteration of the cell cycle, antiproliferative effects, and induction of apoptosis (cancer cell death).[i] There are clinical studies and proof of FWGE’s chemotherapy and radiotherapy support. Notably, Metatrol® is the only gluten-free FWGE, and is the most potent, concentrated formula on the market.

Dr Mitch Gaynor, my integrative oncologist, introduced me to FWGE (AveUltra) when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. This was for its anticancer benefits and for my low white blood cell count (I was not doing chemo or radiation, but the goal was to support my immune system). The original formula wasn’t too pleasant as it was a powder you had to mix with water, so I didn’t stay on it long. But Metatrol® is easy, just two pills a day. I started on it a few months ago when I noticed my white blood cell count had dropped. A month later it was up nicely. Many of my clients have had their doctors recommend this either during conventional treatments or as part of a holistic protocol.

One of the detrimental effects of chemo and radiation is the destruction of the immune system. Chemo reduces the number of infection-fighting white blood cells which makes it harder for your body to fight infections and eliminate cancer cells.[ii] Radiotherapy can damage your body’s lymphatic system, which is a network of channels and glands that form part of your immune system.

When your body has very low levels of white blood cells (and particularly neutrophils), this increases your risk of getting an infection. This common side effect of chemo is called neutropenia, and even a minor infection can become very serious. It could become life-threatening within hours (as can be the case with sepsis).[iii] Importantly, after chemo and or radiation, your immune system can stay suppressed for several months.

Research indicates that taking FWGE once or twice a day while undergoing chemotherapy may help reduce the risk of death and may help prevent cancer from becoming worse or spreading compared to chemo alone.[iv]  See also the dosage of two capsules daily in the studies below. As it can take anywhere from weeks to months after cancer treatments are over for you to get a healthy immune response back, further immune support is likely a very good idea.

Caution: FWGE extract can increase the activity of the immune system. Some medications, such as those used after a transplant, intentionally decrease the activity of the immune system. Taking FWGE along with these medications might decrease the effects of these medications. Be sure to speak with your doctor about FWGE if you are on any type of immunosuppressive therapy.

Chemotherapy is a cornerstone of conventional cancer treatment, but it can also induce immune suppression, which can have significant implications for patient outcomes. This review paper aims to give a general overview of how chemotherapy affects the immune system and how it affects cancer treatment. Chemotherapy can directly affect immune cells, leading to cytotoxic effects, cell differentiation and function alterations, and cell communication and signaling pathways disruptions. Such immune suppression can weaken the anti-tumor immune response and increase the risk of immune-related toxicities. Understanding the mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced immune suppression is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies. Strategies to mitigate immune suppression include immunomodulatory agents as adjuvants to chemotherapy, combination therapies to enhance immune function, and supportive care measures of the immune system. Additionally, identifying potential biomarkers to predict immune suppression and guide treatment decisions holds promise for personalized cancer medicine. Future directions in this field involve further elucidating underlying mechanisms, exploring novel combination therapies, and developing targeted interventions to minimize immune suppression. By understanding and addressing chemotherapy-induced immune suppression, we can optimize cancer treatment strategies, enhance the anti-tumor immune response, and improve patient outcomes. [v]

Fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE; trade name AVEMAR) is a natural compound derived from industrial fermentation of wheat germ. Its potential anticancer properties have emerged from recent studies. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the data available in the scientific literature concerning the in vitro activity of FWGE on malignant cells. A systematic review of English articles in electronic databases has been performed. The primary outcomes of the review regarded types of cancer cell lines subjected to the investigation and the main results concerning cell viability, proliferation, and apoptosis observed within the studies. Sixteen articles were included in the final qualitative analysis. Various types of cancer cells treated with FWGE have been analyzed, showing mainly cytotoxic effects, alteration of the cell cycle, antiproliferative effects, and induction of apoptosis (cancer cell death). METATROL®, GLUTEN-FREE, FERMENTED WHEAT GERM EXTRACT SUPER CONCENTRATE. In 2004, American BioSciences started distributing the Hungarian Fermented Wheat Germ Extract (FWGE) Avemar® under the brand name Ave’®, and began a collaboration with Dr. Mate Hidvegi, who asked our company to invest in new manufacturing technology to make a more potent dietary supplement product.  We set up factories in the U.S. and Germany, to make our Ave’Ultra® product (also sold under the brand name Oncomar® by Xymogen), which provided the same amount of FWGE active molecules, but reduced the daily dose by more than 50%.  We continued our research and development, which enabled us to further concentrate the biologically beneficial molecules from FWGE. Using a patented process, we now manufacture a gluten-free Fermented Wheat Germ Extract-Super Concentrate (FWGE-SC®), which we market under the brand names Metatrol® and Metatrol PRO®.

Research on FWGE is extensive. Close to 60 articles in medical journals describing hundreds of studies in cell lines and with animal and human subjects can be found via the National Library of Medicine HERE and the full text of most can be found via www.fwgeresearch.org.

These show that FWGE helps regulate cell metabolism,* inhibits non-oxidative glucose metabolism,* enhances oxidative glucose metabolism,* and supports many mechanisms of immune system regulation.*  This article from the New York Academy of Sciences is a good review:

The most recent paper, results of a multi-year collaboration with Cold Spring Harbor Lab on a lab scale version of Metatrol /Metatrol PRO FWGE-SC®, known by the experimental name, A250, was published in Nature Scientific Reports: Bencze, G., Bencze, S., Rivera, K.D. et al. Mito-oncology agent: fermented extract suppresses the Warburg effect, restores oxidative mitochondrial activity, and inhibits in vivo tumor growth. Sci Rep 10, 14174 (2020). Abstract below.

“Abstract: Mitochondrial dysfunction and significant changes in metabolic pathways accompany cancer development and are responsible for maintaining the tumor micro-environment. Normal mitochondria can trigger intrinsic apoptosis by releasing cytochrome c into the cytosol. The survival of malignant cells highly depends on the suppression of this function. We validated that A250, a highly purified fraction of fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE), increases the carbon flux into the mitochondria, the expression of key elements of the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). The increased respiratory chain activity is related to the mitochondria’s ability to release cytochrome c into the cytosol, which triggers the apoptotic cascade. The 68% tumor growth inhibitory effect observed in the murine melanoma study is related to this effect, as proteomic analysis validated similar changes in mitochondrial protein levels in the isolated tumor tissue samples. Blood count data indicated that this effect was not accompanied by general toxicity. This study is significant, as it shows that a highly concentrated form of FWGE is an effective agent that increases normal mitochondrial functionality. The lack of hepatotoxic and general toxic effects makes A250 an excellent candidate targeting mitochondria function in cancer therapy.”

Our research with Cold Spring Harbor Lab utilized a process known as “bio-assay guided fractionation,” where we attempted to identify which of the 10,000 or so molecules in FWGE/Avemar account for its biological activity. In the end, we did not find one single molecule that accounts for FWGE/Avemar’s health benefits, but we did isolate the “bio-active fraction” of approximately 100 molecules, referred to as “A250” in research, which is found in Metatrol Pro, and we have established that 41 mg of this fraction, found in 2 Metatrol PRO capsules, is bio-equivalent with 5,500 mg of whole FWGE/Avemar.

We developed a patented technology (2 patents granted this year) to manufacture a gluten-free, bioactive FWGE fraction, which we now call FWGE-SC®, which in the powder form, FWGE-SCP is the ingredient in Metatrol.  Assays show that 2 Metatrol capsules, containing 41 mg of FWGE-SC, or 830 mg of FWGE-SCP is bioequivalent with 5,500 mg of whole FWGE, the dose used in clinical trials.  For additional information visit The Harmony Company.

ImmPower Your Immune System to Boost Natural Killer Cell Activity

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Immunotherapy on April 24, 2024 at 1:19 pm

Natural killer cells (NKcells are innate immune cells that are critical to the body’s antitumor and antimetastatic defense. [i] NK cells make up 10% to 15% of the immune system’s white blood cells.  NK cells perform a cytotoxic function and play an important regulatory role in the immune system. Immunologists, who named these cells NK cells and have described them as the “sentinel cells” of the immune system, have been developing immunotherapies to treat patients with metastatic disease. Importantly, ImmPower, a dietary supplement made by American BioSciences, supports peak functioning of Natural Killer (NK) cells. While immunotherapies can often have unpleasant side effects, extensive published research shows that ImmPower is safe and non-toxic (see below for documentation and detailed information provided by American BioSciences).  This post is not to imply that AHCC is a replacement for cancer treatments such as immunotherapy, it is simply for educational purposes. Always speak with your medical doctor before taking any supplements.

American BioSciences’ ImmPower® dietary supplement introduced the US to Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC®), a best-selling Japanese product. AHCC is a standardized fermented mushroom extract that contains a unique low molecular weight, alpha-1, 4 glucan. It has been the subject of more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals describing research in animals and humans. These studies show that AHCC supports peak Natural Killer (NK) cell function and associated immune system activity (including enhanced cytokine production and optimal t-cell and macrophage activity).  These are available via the website of the National Library of Medicine, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=%22active+hexose+correlated+compound%22 The full text of many articles are available via the website www.ahccpublishedresearch.com

Extensive published research shows that the ingredient in ImmPower is safe and non-toxic, and in the context of many types of health challenges, supports peak functioning of Natural Killer (NK) cells.  NK cells make up 10% to 15% of the immune system’s white blood cells.  Immunologists named them “Natural Killer Cells.” From birth, they have an inborn natural ability to distinguish healthy “self-cells” in the body, from pathogenic, “non-self cells,” which they attack. NK cells perform a cytotoxic function and play an important regulatory role in the immune system. They have been described as the “sentinel cells” of the immune system.

Like the sentinels which guard a fort, NK cells are constantly patrolling the body, on the look-out for cells which don’t display the self-antigen (a feature on every healthy cell which tells the NK cells, “I’m one of the good guys, don’t attack me”). NK cells shoot a packet of enzymes at non-self cells, which will often kill them out right, or create cell debris that acts like a siren, calling the rest of the immune system army into the battle. When NK cell function is high, they send out an “all clear” signal to the immune system army, so that immune system resources remain rested and ready until they are needed. When NK cell function is low, the immune system army does not get the “all clear” signal and is subsequently more active than it needs to be. If it is too active, there can be an over production of compounds, which stimulate white blood cell proliferation, excessive inflammation, and other conditions.

NK cell activity declines with age, and in response to emotional and physical stress. Additionally, a decline in NK cell activity is associated with the onset and progression of many health problems.  Because NK cells regulate the immune system, they have the potential to dampen overactive immune system activity that can damage healthy tissue.

In clinical trials, people taking ImmPower’s primary active ingredient, AHCC, took the equivalent of six capsules per day. Many physicians recommend two with each meal: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, although they can be taken on an empty stomach as well.  For more information and links to research, visit The Harmony Company.

American BioSciences was established in 1999, and is involved in research, manufacturing, and marketing of dietary supplements.  They have collaborated with leading medical researchers in the US and abroad, and our products contain ingredients which have been extensively studied to show safety and health benefits.  Their dietary supplements are sold via many health food stores and pharmacies, Amazon.com, and direct to consumers via The Harmony Company.

I have been taking ImmPower for many years and attribute that in part to my good health. I hope this information is helpful to you. Next up is Metatrol, a fermented wheat germ extract by American BioSciences that supports mitochondrial and immune function, modulates Th1/Th2 balance, and more.

Salicinium, the Trojan Horse for Cancer Cells

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Cell Phones, chemotherapy, EMF Radiation, EMFs and breast cancer, Epstein Barr and Cancer, Salicinium and Cancer, Uncategorized on February 29, 2024 at 3:51 pm

Last week I attended the annual Annie Appleseed conference, an amazing conference to educate people on the benefits of Alternative and Complementary Cancer Treatments. One of the treatments I was eager to learn more about is Salicinium, something many have referred to as the “Trojan horse for cancer cells.” [1]

Among the literature provided at the conference was an article published in the Townsend Letter, the Examiner of Alternative Medicine, “Salicinium Clinical Pearls and Caveats”. I encourage you to read the article in full as it gives valuable information on Salicinium as well as the methods of administration and other important information.

For clarity, Salicinium does not kill malignant cells, it helps the immune system to do this by increasing natural killer (NK) cells. It seems to destroy the enzymatic ‘cloak’ which allows cancer cells to hide from the NK cells. Salicinium can be used as an Integrative therapy to allopathic treatments.

Something else I would like to point out is that according to the author, “due to the metabolic effects on other sick cells that predispose a patient to developing or perpetuating cancer, Salicinium is an effective adjuvant for patients with EBV, HPV, HSV, parasites, fungus, and candida.” This is very important as unbeknownst to many, these often play an integral role in the development and progression of cancer (see my page on EBV (Epstein Barr Virus).

Importantly, according to the article, Salicinium can cross the blood-brain barrier. “One of the mechanisms suggested for the persistence of a high incidence of brain metastases is the failure to cross the blood–brain barrier of most chemotherapeutic agents, including the more recent targeted therapies.”[2] Most pharmaceutical anticancer drugs do not cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB), and many metastatic patients die from brain metastases. The treatment of brain metastases remains a major therapeutic challenge since other standard treatments (surgery, radiation therapy) are also of limited benefit.

“There is increasing discontent on the part of patients and families when faced with these choices. With the instances of cancer being so high in the population, it seems everyone knows several people who have cancer; and many have watched their friends and family suffer and die on traditional regimens. A week does not pass when I interview a new patient who tells me of someone they know who died after the first dose of chemotherapy or was told “your only hope is to receive chemotherapy until you die.’ Thus, many are turning away from the “standard of care’ since they feel it will not produce the result they want and hope for, namely life and vitality beyond cancer. Fear of death is one thing, but patients state that fear of death by torture is unacceptable.”[i]

Many thanks to Virginia Von Schaefer, MD, who shared this information with attendees of the conference. Dr Schaefer has over 30 years of clinical experience in general and trauma surgery, endocrinology, and oncology to create strategies to solve her patients’ complex medical problems. Her background in cell biology and biochemistry at Columbia University in New York City, established a special problem- solving mindset and framework that allows her to integrate “the best of both worlds” of conventional medical and surgical practice, along with an understanding of the fundamental biochemical/scientific basis for all current modalities.

Always remember that you and only you can determine the best treatment for your cancer. Your cancer, your body, your choice of treatment.

This post is not intended to endorse Salicinium, but rather to educate and share that Salicinium is just one more option to consider in one’s cancer protocol. Salicinium is a natural phytochemical and not a chemotherapy. Please read the entire Townsend Letter article for further information.

In your everlasting good health,

Elyn

Progesterone and Breast Cancer

Progesterone is vital to the female body, yet many women fear it. Progesterone is the key to many aspects of female health, and often thought of as one of the most important hormones. But most women have very low levels of progesterone which can result in estrogen dominance and can significantly increase one’s risk of breast cancer!

In short, estrogen and progesterone work in tandem. The former hormone helps cancerous cells flourish while the latter puts the brakes on cell growth and proliferation.

Why You NEED Progesterone

Progesterone is the precursor to other important hormones, including estrogen and testosterone. These hormones play a significant role in female health, influencing everything from cognitive function, menopause, fertility, helping the uterus to grow during pregnancy, normal breast development during puberty, and so much more, including breast cancer prevention. Importantly, the body depends on the right balance of these hormones in order to function properly.

“Estrogen can cause cells to grow or proliferate, but progesterone decreases proliferation/cell growth while encouraging cells to become more specialized or mature, so in effect, progesterone’s actions decrease cancer risk. When progesterone is present, its receptors make the estrogen receptor no longer able to cause breast cells to grow or proliferate.”[i] (The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research). More on receptors below.

Natural progesterone is not to be feared. In fact, it is widely believed that estrogen can only fuel breast cancer in the absence of progesterone. In essence, progesterone puts the brakes on cell proliferation and growth. Estrogen should also not be feared and is actually essential for so many reasons (heart, bone, and eye health, etc.) The Important thing is to help your body metabolize estrogen properly so the body can use what it needs and excrete the excess ( a topic beyond the scope of this article).

The confusion about progesterone comes from studies using progestin (synthetic progesterone). Progestins are NOT the same thing as progesterone. But again, one of progesterone’s jobs is to decrease the risk for breast cancer. It does that by decreasing the proliferation often caused by excess estrogen.

Importantly, chemical estrogens (also known as xenoestrogens) such as BPA (bisphenol A) and other chemicals often found in home and personal care items are another story. They DO fuel breast cancer. For more information on the damages of BPA and BPS please read: BPA: The Bathroom Toxin that Fuels Breast Cancer.

Symptoms of Progesterone Deficiency Include:

  • Unexplained fatigue and low energy
  • Intense PMS symptoms such as cramps and moodiness
  • Dizziness
  • Difficultly sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Mood swings
  • Hot flashes
  • Low libido
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Weight gain
  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Infertility and miscarriage
  • Uterine bleeding
  • Breast and other cancers

Some women have been progesterone-deficient most of their lives, whereas others find themselves in this predicament around age 45 or so, when the ovaries stop making the hormones estrogen and progesterone and turn the job over to the adrenals. Regardless, it is imperative that we increase progesterone if it is low and in turn, balance the hormones. Clearly the list above gives you enough reasons.

Raising Progesterone

Foods that can help raise progesterone include broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, beans, and nuts. Supplements include magnesium, and vitamin E (mixed tocopherols). Chaste Tree (Vitex) can also stimulate progesterone. Activated B6 is necessary for the synthesis of progesterone and helps the liver to metabolize and break down estrogen (B6 can also available in food sources such as leafy greens, peppers, carrots, asparagus, broccoli, walnuts, eggs, sweet potatoes, and sunflower seeds. For the carnivores, you can find it in grass-fed beef and beef liver). Zinc supports the production and use of progesterone. A deficiency in zinc increases estrogen sensitivity and decreases the progesterone response.

Things that deplete progesterone are stress and excessive exercise (which cause the body to produce stress hormones instead of progesterone).

Importantly, too much zinc will deplete copper. While copper can promote cancer, the body does need just a bit. Cooper deficiency can cause extreme tiredness, elevated cholesterol, brittle bones, increase risk of infection, and more.

A Note About Bio-Identical Progesterone

It is important to understand the difference between progesterone that is made by the body or is molecularly similar to one’s own natural progesterone and synthetic progesterone, which has been molecularly altered. This is why many women opt for bio-identical progesterone.

However, as discussed in a previous article,  Could Aromatase Inhibitors Actually Increase One’s Risk for Breast Cancer prescription bio-identicals can be problematic. According to Dr Mache Seibel, M.D., author of The Estrogen Window, you must be careful with compounded bio-identicals. This is because sometimes the progesterone in compounded formulas can be 60-80% lower than ordered and estrogen 80-200% higher than ordered which can result in increased estrogen dominance. This could raise your risk of hormone-driven cancer.

Another option is bio-identical topical creams. There are a few good ones on the market, but one I use is Progesto-life. According to the instructions, you just rub a quarter teaspoon into your wrist or belly.

I strongly suggest you work with a qualified practitioner before beginning any type of bio-identical hormones. There is much we don’t know and some react differently than others. Please know that your oncologist might not be trained to discuss this with you.

Importantly, please do not confuse hormone levels with receptor status!

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. They travel in your bloodstream to tissues or organs to help them do their work.

Estrogen and progesterone receptors are proteins in cells that bind hormones and switch genes on and off, changing the cell’s behavior. Hormone receptor-positive breast cancers have many receptors, and the tumor cells become overly sensitive to estrogen. When estrogen activates the estrogen receptor, it signals the genes that tell the cells to keep dividing, driving tumor growth. However, when breast cancer cells have working progesterone receptors, and there is sufficient progesterone available, progesterone will slow down estrogen fueled growth and division of these cells.

The late John Lee, MD, author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer maintained that when activated by progesterone, its receptors attach themselves to estrogen receptors. This tells the genes that promote growth to pivot and instead promote the death of cancer cells.

A study published in the Dec 2016 edition of the journal Nature, led by Cambridge-based Cancer Research U.K. researcher Dr. Jason Carroll of the University of Adelaide in Australia found that progesterone –via the progesterone receptor– reprograms the estrogen receptor, causing the cells to stop growing as quickly. For more information, please read my article, Progesterone and Breast Cancer.

So, if you are ER and or PR positive it simply means you have receptors for these hormones. It does not mean you have high levels of either hormone. In fact, most doctors recommend tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors without even testing hormone levels, which could be a big mistake (particularly in the case of aromatase inhibitors).

For those who have or have had TNBC (triple negative breast cancer), progesterone has been found to inhibit this type of cancer as well.

This article is a re-write from a previous article of mine published in January 2020.

In your everlasting good health,

Elyn

Enzymes for Optimal Health During Cancer Healing

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer diet, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Cononavirus, COVID-19, Enzymatic Therapy for Cancer, Uncategorized on December 10, 2020 at 4:38 pm

Many are aware of the benefits of enzymes as a boost to heal from cancer. While your doctor has likely not handed you a prescription for carrots, sauerkraut, or broccoli, we know that diet plays a huge role in healing from cancer. Certain foods (and supplements) can target cancer cells, inhibit progression, and make the body inhospitable to cancer. But what is it about enzymes in our food that makes a difference?

Simply put, metabolic enzymes promote optimal function of heart, brain, lung, and kidney function. They do this by helping the body break down large food molecules into smaller units that can be absorbed and utilized by cells, which is how our bodies get nourished from the proteins, fats, and carbs we consume.

There are literally hundreds of metabolic enzymes in our cells, organs, blood, and bones. They are secreted by the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas, and small intestine. But to clarify, there are basically three main types of enzymes.  The enzyme protease works to digest proteins, lipase helps to digest fats, and amylase works on carbs. In other words, enzymes speed up the digestive process so nutrients from food can be properly absorbed. When food is digested too slowly the pancreas and other organs feel the stress and are less able to rebuild cells and tissues and keep the immune system functioning properly.

The problem is we usually lack enzymes because we cook our food to death. But that isn’t the only problem. Processed foods, excessive stress, and many other things can deplete enzyme reserves. Eating a mostly plant-based raw diet along with cultured and sprouted foods can help. Foods that contain considerable digestive enzymes include pineapple (especially the core), mangoes, bananas, raw honey, avocados, kiwi, ginger, sprouted seeds, and fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi. Too cold for a completely raw diet right now? I am right there with you. Make a soup to go along with your salad or add fresh sprouts to your soup as a garnish.

However, if you still notice that are losing weight, have a change in your stool, or have excessive gas or pain after eating you may benefit from taking supplemental enzymes. Also important is to keep the body in balance, meaning your pH level may be too acidic, which according to some, prevents the enzymes from working properly. If that fails to bring you comfort, you might need to switch your brand as each enzyme has slightly different ratios of all three digestive enzymes (lipase, protease, and amylase and some don’t contain all). Please note that supplements are best taken directly before your meal.

A few supplements you might find helpful:

Enzymedica Digest Gold

EnzymeMD

Digestzymes

VegEnzymes

Bromelain

The above information is not meant as a cancer treatment, but rather to improve digestion to boost immune function and improve health. Many alternative doctors do use enzyme therapies specifically to target cancer. According to the late cancer specialist Nicholas Gonzalez, high-dose enzyme therapy helps to break down tumors, clear the circulatory system of debris, and stimulate the immune system. Some also believe enzymes can break down the protective coating of cancer-promoting viruses so that they can be seen and targeted by the immune system.  Please note that high dose enzyme therapy should only be done under the guidance of a medical professional.

Lastly, right now with the ongoing COVID issue, good nutrition and optimal absorption is our best defense –that and maintaining a superior vitamin D level (always with K2 support).

If you’d like more guidance, I’d love to work with you! Check out my “Contact Us” page or email elyn@elynjacobs.com for more details.

Natural Ways to Balance and Manage Hormones for Breast Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Alternatives to Anti-Hormone Therapy For Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Tamoxifen, Anticancer diet, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors, BPA and breast cancer, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Estrogen, Estrogen and Breast Cancer, Hormone Balance, Integrative Oncology, Natural Alternatives to Aromatase Inhibitors, Natural Aromatase Inhibitors, Uncategorized on August 4, 2020 at 7:17 am

Hormone imbalances occur when we have to much or too little of a hormone in your bloodstream. While your body secretes about 50 different hormones that control many critical functions, for the purpose of this article, I will be discussing only estrogen and progesterone. When estrogen is high and progesterone is low, we have a condition known as estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance is often a strong risk factor for breast cancer. Fortunately, there are many natural ways to balance the hormones and manage risk of cancer.

Even small hormonal imbalances can create side effects, including increased risk of breast cancer. What women with breast cancer hear most from their doctors is that estrogen is the villain, the cause of our cancer. However, while estrogen can fuel breast cancer, there is more to the story. Estrogen can fuel a tumor’s growth, but progesterone may put the brakes on that growth.

To be clear, estrogen is not bad, and in many cases, should not be reduced without due care. Estrogen plays a major role in numerous processes including blood sugar balance, as well as bone, eye, and heart health. But it needs to be balanced by progesterone, something that drops dramatically with age and increased stress.

To recap an article I wrote for The Truth About Cancer, estrogen and progesterone receptors are proteins found within many of the cells of our bodies, including cells in the breasts. Both receptors are directly involved in switching genes on and off − some 470 different genes. When estrogen and progesterone are present, these hormones stick to their respective receptors. They can then attach to specific regions of our DNA and turn genes on or off, changing the cell’s behavior.

Hormone receptor-positive breast cancers have many hormone receptors. In the case of breast cancer, tumor cells become overly sensitive to estrogen. When estrogen activates its receptor, it turns on a panel of genes that tell cells to keep dividing, encouraging tumor growth. However, the body also has progesterone receptors. When breast cancer cells have working progesterone receptors, and when there is sufficient progesterone available, progesterone will slow down estrogen-fueled growth and division of these cells. According to the late John Lee, Md, author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer, when progesterone receptors are activated by progesterone, they attach themselves to the estrogen receptors. This essentially puts the brakes on the estrogen receptors, telling them to stop turning on genes that promote the growth of cancer cells, and turning on genes that promote the death of these cells.

A 2016 study led by Cambridge-based Cancer Researcher Dr. Jason Caroll of the University of Adelaide in Australia found that progesterone, via the progesterone receptor, is affecting how the estrogen receptor works. He found that the progesterone receptor actually ‘reprograms’ the estrogen receptor, changing the genes that it influences.[i]

Importantly, Carroll found that progesterone seems to cause cancer cells to stop growing as quickly. That said, what I am referring to is natural progesterone. While natural progesterone has an anticancer effect, synthetic progesterone does not and can actually make cancers more aggressive and deadlier. Further, synthetic progesterone does not activate tumor suppressor gene p53 when it attaches to progesterone receptors. P53 is a repair gene, which protects cells from becoming cancerous.

Toxic Substances Act Like Estrogen

We are bombarded daily with chemicals in the air, our food, and the products we use in our home and on our bodies. These chemicals, also known as xenoestrogens, are considered endocrine or hormone disruptors because they interfere with the production of hormones. They cause wide-ranging damage in the body. For example, bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS), found in plastics, can liners, cash register receipts and most paper products mimic estrogen and can disrupt multiple hormonal pathways. Unlike our own estrogen, chemical estrogens (xenoestrogens) are particularly harmful. Read more HERE.

Fortunately, there are many natural approaches to ease hormones back into balance and reduce your risk of breast cancer.

Natural Approaches for Balancing Hormones

Let’s take a look at some herbs and natural approaches to balancing hormones.

Phytoestrogens modulate estrogen levels. Phytoestrogens work similarly to tamoxifen, blocking the effects of estrogen in breast tissue.[ii]

They act more like estrogen blockers than like estrogen; they modulate the production, availability, and action of hormones and slow down cell division. This is important as many oncologists illogically warn women to avoid them.

Phytoestrogens bind preferentially to estrogen receptor sites in the body. However, they are 99% weaker than our own natural estrogen, which means that they have very little estrogenic effects in the body. It also means that by binding to the receptors, more aggressive natural estrogen or xenoestrogens from the environment will be less able to bind to the receptors. Therefore, phytoestrogens might limit the negative estrogenic impact of those estrogens. Instead of fueling estrogen-dependent cancers, phytoestrogens tend to reduce the risk of these cancers. Even the NCI (National Cancer Institute) acknowledges that the plant-based hormones may have anticancer effects.[iii]

Meanwhile, if you are post-menopausal with very low estrogen levels, phytoestrogens may help reduce the resulting effects, such as bone loss, eye damage, and heart damage. Soy and flaxseed are two of the most powerful phytoestrogens, but herbs such as red clover, sage, hops, and fenugreek are also helpful.

Soy blocks cancer-promoting estrogens from attaching to the estrogen receptors on breast cells. It has also been shown to stop tumor growth, prevent metastasis, and shut off new blood vessels in growing tumors.  Fermented soy, such as tempeh and miso are preferred over unfermented versions such as tofu. This is because the fermentation process increases free radical scavenging activity and removes the nutrient blocking effect that soy can have—the phytic acid in unfermented soy can block absorption of key minerals such as magnesium and zinc. Soy in a highly processed form (like soy protein isolate or soy protein concentrate) should be avoided as they have the greatest ability to block nutrient absorption. Due to the fact that most soy is genetically altered, it is highly recommended to consume only organic and non-GMO. (My only issue with tempeh is that it is commonly ‘shrink-wrapped’ in plastic’)

Flaxseed modulates the production, availability, and action of hormones—and does so much more (flax –and sesame seeds– offer anti-cancer lignans which can significantly reduce tumor growth by increasing cell death and decreasing the growth of new blood vessels that allow cancer to advance). As for hormones, the lignans in flax lower the production of estrogen by blocking the aromatase enzyme (similar to aromatase inhibitors) and block the estrogen receptors (similar to Tamoxifen). When lignans are consumed, intestinal bacteria convert them into enterolactone and enterodiol, weak estrogens. They attach to estrogen receptors, stimulate them weakly and block estrogen binding. This prevents estradiol or estrone from attaching to the estrogen receptors and strongly stimulating them, and includes not just the estrogen we produce, but also environmental toxins, thus making breast tissue more resistant to these environmental toxins.  One long-term study reported that relatively high circulating enterolactone levels are associated with lower risk of death after an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis. Please read my articles — Flaxseed: Better Than Tamoxifen and Demystifying Flaxseed and Estrogen.

Licorice root and Vitex (also known a chaste tree berry), focus more on raising progesterone. Progesterone tends to fall sharply as we age and are no longer ovulating. While bio-identical progesterone supplement progesterone directly, licorice root and vitex are thought to lower estrogen levels while simultaneously raising progesterone, thus helping to relieve hormone imbalance and estrogen dominance. (use caution if you have elevated blood pressure)

Combining vitex with stress-reducing adaptogens such as ashwagandha or Schisandra can be helpful as stress tends to lower progesterone. Some people have reported that vitex worsens depression, so discontinue if that happens. (Do not take Schisandra with Tamoxifen).

Red clover can bind weakly to estrogen receptors, standing in for estrogen when levels are low and lowering high estrogen levels, helping to balance the hormones and correct estrogen dominance.

White peony root, something often used in traditional Chinese medicine, also supports progesterone. Black cohosh seems to support healthy estrogen levels not by actually boosting estrogen, but by improving brain-ovary communication and modulating cell receptors. This can help reduces menopausal symptoms and ease depression.

Adaptogens such as maca support hormone balance and may boost libido and mood while decreasing anxiety.

Vitamin E is crucial to maintaining a healthy balance between progesterone and estradiol. Vitamin C plays an important role in preventing the degradation of steroid hormones into toxic and cancer-promoting metabolites. It also regenerates estrone and significantly regenerates progesterone.

Vitamin B6 has been shown to help increase levels of progesterone in the blood naturally. Magnesium is another key nutrient for increasing progesterone levels, as it plays an important role in maintaining a healthy hormonal balance in the body.

Probiotics support gut bacteria and improve digestion, helping to prevent constipation. This is important because when poop remains in the bowel for extended periods of time, excess estrogen is re-absorbed and re-circulated into the bloodstream. Plus, immune function depends on healthy gut microflora—and gut flora effects cancer genes too!

Consume GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), which is found in evening primrose oil and in hemp seeds.  Research shows that this type of omega-6 may support healthy progesterone levels.

Get more sleep—lack of sleep disturbs hormone balance. Try to get to sleep by 10 pm as melatonin production peaks between 10 pm and 2 am. Melatonin stimulates tumor-suppressor genes and counteracts the effects of aggressive estrogens, including xenoestrogens.  Cell phone EMF exposure can suppress the production of melatonin—limit use before bed and do not keep near your bed, and preferably out of your room.

If you are overweight, lose weight. Fat cells increase estrogen production. Increased weight often means insulin resistance and this is a common cause of high estrogen levels. Insulin resistance leads to an up regulation of the aromatase enzyme leading to high estrogen. Plus, over-consumption of calories leads excessive free radical formation. Free radicals damage cells and cause genetic mutations, which ultimately can lead to cancer.

Your Liver and Estrogen

Be sure that your liver and gut are functionally efficiently as estrogen is metabolized in the liver and excreted out of the bowel. Think of your liver as a filter that neutralizes toxic substances so that they can safely be excreted from the body.  By enhancing liver function, more estrogen is broken down in the body, reducing the overall estrogen load.

When the liver and colon have become sluggish due to low thyroid function, stress, and an overburden of toxins, the body cannot break down and remove excess estrogen adequately from the system. The excess unbalanced estrogen gets stored in the fat cells of breast tissues when it is not properly eliminated. Nutrients derived from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts as well as sulforaphane supplements  help with the detoxification of estrogen through the liver (Read about Sulforaphane HERE)

Supporting the liver with supplements such as N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Milk Thistle, and SAMe can be very helpful. DIM and Indole-3Carbinol,  two other extracts of cruciferous vegetables, can encourage proper metabolism of estrogens in the body and help to clear excesses and xenoestrogens from the system. Dandelion, herbal bitters, artichoke extract, also support the liver in detoxifying, metabolizing, and excreting hormones. Fiber binds to bile (liver’s waste) to support excretion.

For more on detoxification and liver function, please request my Estrogen and Detoxification Handouts or visit the Estrogen Management and Detoxification Sections on my supplement page.

Natural Aromatase Inhibitors:

Pumpkin seeds, button mushrooms, and supplements such as DIM, vitamin K2, calcium d-glucarate, zinc, gingko biloba, and  grapeseed extract (organic please)  are natural aromatase inhibitors. Research done at the State University of New Jersey demonstrated that a 2% concentration of rosemary extract was able to inactivate excess estrogen[iv] Apigenin – found in parsley, celery, and chamomile—is another aromatase inhibitor and is a potent estrogen metabolizing compound.

Read more on Natural Aromatase Inhibitors HERE.

Note: while herbs are powerful, it may take at least 4 months of use to begin to show benefits. Further, herbs can interact with one another or with various medications, so always consult your doctor before use.

Testing: If you are looking to lower your estrogen levels, you may want to test your hormone levels first. You can be low on estrogen and still be estrogen dominant, so it may be important to acquire this information. Also note that it is possible to have ‘normal’ estrogen levels when tested via blood or saliva, but still have high estrogen symptoms.  This can happen if your body is not detoxifying estrogen correctly.

In your everlasting good health,

Elyn

Broccoli and Watercress Sprouts Fight Cancer

[Editor’s note] This post was originally published in February 2017. It has been updated and republished in March 2019

It is well known that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and watercress contain powerful anticancer compounds. But did you know that eating their respective sprouts can supercharge the health benefits? Sprouts are high in vitamins C, A, and phytonutrients that support the immune system.

In sprout form these little three to four day old plants contain almost 100 times the level of cancer-fighting sulforaphane than the mature plants. The phytonutrients in these sprouts up-regulate antioxidant enzymes and detoxification processes which clear toxic compounds from the body. And, that is just the beginning—read on to find out how sprouts knock the socks off cancer.

 What’s in a Sprout

Isothiocyanates (ITCs), such as sulforaphane, are sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables. They support matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity which reduces the breakdown of connective tissue within a cell that impede the expansion of existing tumors. Matrix MMP-9 plays important roles in tumor invasion and angiogenesis. Secretion of MMP-9 has been reported in various cancer types including lung, colon, and breast cancer.

ITCs also kill off cancer cells, including cancer stem cells, which is essential for combating cancer metastases. Isothiocyanates restrain certain pro-inflammatory compounds that are associated with chronic inflammation and cancer.

The ITC sulforaphane helps support the anti-inflammatory Nrf2 pathway which protects cells against oxidative and free radical activity. It supports the detoxification process by inducing Phase 2 detoxification enzymes, inhibiting the activation of pro-carcinogens, and  by boosting cellular glutathione levels.  Sulforaphane promotes cancer cell death and inhibits cancer cell proliferation. It also supports the immune system and in particular, increases Natural Killer Cell activity.

Sulforaphane also inhibits Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium that increases one’s risk of stomach and colorectal cancer.  It is also anti-viral and has been found effective against the Epstein Barr Virus and may be helpful against Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Quercetin, another potent antioxidant highly concentrated in sprouts, is a strong anti-inflammatory and prevents tumor cell growth.  It also aids in the removal of excess estrogen from the body — it stimulates liver function to detoxify estrogen and other carcinogenic agents.

Lutein is another powerful antioxidant that neutralizes cancer-causing free radicals (it is also essential for many things, including eye health, protecting against macular degeneration, and for maintaining strong eye tissue). Lutein (and zeaxanthin) may be beneficial to cardio health by preventing hardening of the arteries.

Glutathione has been labeled the ‘mother of all antioxidants” due to its incredible ability to disarm free radicals, detoxify the body, and boost the immune system.

Broccoli Sprouts

broccoli-sproutsBroccoli sprouts are extremely high in cancer fighting activity, particularly against lung, colon, and breast cancers. Compounds in broccoli speed up the removal of estrogen from the body, helping to suppress breast cancer. They also target cancer stem cells, the cells responsible for metastasis.

Broccoli sprouts contain a high amount of the cancer-busting and immune boosting substance sulforaphane. They are also abundant in quercetin, glutathione, beta carotene, indoles, vitamin C, lutein, glucarate, and the metabolic substance DIM, which is a natural aromatase inhibitor.

Broccoli sprouts are rich in cholesterol reducing fiber and have anti-viral and anti-ulcer activity. They are also a super source of chromium that helps regulate insulin and blood sugar.

Watercress Sproutswatercress-sprouts

Sometimes called peppergrass, watercress is delicious and pungent. It is also one of the most nutrient-dense foods known. It is rich in beta-carotene and other carotenoids, including lutein. Watercress also offers significant quercetin, EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), flavanols such a kaempferol, lycopene, indole-3 carbinol (13C), sulforaphane, as well as DIM. It is a good source of riboflavin, vitamin C, A and K, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, and contains trace amounts of omega 3’s. Watercress is one of the best food sources of iodine for vegans.

Watercress also contains a high amount of PEITC (phenylethylisothiocyanate) which has been shown to protect DNA from damage. PEITC reduces the growth of breast cancer cells, triggers apoptosis (cancer cell death), and decreases angiogenesis. It inhibits the growth of HER2 expression as well as cancer metastasis.

PEITC (also found in some other cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli) deactivates mutant p53 in tumor cells but leaves normal p53 alone. P53 regulates cell division by keeping cells from growing and dividing too fast or in an uncontrolled way. A mutation in p53 is a permanent change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA. Loss of p53 function can be deleterious, and about 50% of all human cancers have a mutated p53 gene.

Watercress has antioxidant, antigenotoxic (the process by which chemical agents damage genetic information within a cell causing mutations), and anti-inflammatory properties.

Studies show that a regular intake of watercress has been associated with protection against breast, colon, and other cancers.

Watercress and broccoli affect all stages of cancer: initiation, proliferation, and metastasis. So, what’s not to love about these sprouts? Plus, it is a lot easier to consume a handful of sprouts than it is to down a pound and a half of broccoli or an enormous plate of watercress– which, for example,  is the amount it would take to get an equivalent amount of sulforaphane.

Add sprouts to your smoothies; use on sandwiches, on top of pizza, in salads, and as a garnish for soups. I make wonderful gluten-free pizza crusts using cauliflower or garbanzo bean flour, and pile the pizza high with arugula and sprouts just before serving.  Yum!

Just a reminder that while  eating cruciferous vegetables is a important for overall optimal health, it may support you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Choose to consume cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, radish, and kale). It is necessary to have sufficient iodine in the diet when consuming high quantities  (including DIM).

Can’t find sprouts locally or worried about others handling your raw vegetables?  Grow your own. You can grow your own sprouts and now it is easier than ever (no changing the water several times a day, just add water to the tray day one and done.
