What You Need to Know About the Status of Intravenous Vitamin C

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, Breast Cancer, Cancer, cancer stem cells and recurrence, chemo and cancer stem cells, colon cancer, foods that target cancer stem cells, Healing Cancer Naturally, High Dose Vitamin C and Cancer, IVC and Cancer, what causes cancer stem cells, what causes cancer to spread on June 26, 2017 at 4:40 pm

Some people seem to be under the impression that it will soon be impossible to get intravenous vitamin C. There is no cause for alarm! While the FDA has been quietly attempting to ban this vital cancer treatment, it is still widely available.

About three years ago, the FDA created a shortage of IV bags, which did raise the price of the treatment by a few dollars. They also banned one manufacturer from making the injectable vitamin C solution. There is no doubt the FDA is up to no good, and we may see higher prices coming our way because of this. Clearly this is a ploy put in motion by Big Pharma with the blessings of the FDA.

However, many compounding pharmacies are still offering it, and none of the doctors I know of are having difficulties with supply.

Instead of banning IVC, the government should be grateful for this therapy.  But alas, a non-patentable solution would not line the pockets of Big Pharma, and sadly, those pockets are apparently more important than our lives.

High Dose Vitamin C a Valuable Cancer Treatment

In the past 46 years, trillions of dollars have been spent on cancer research and treatment since Nixon declared the ‘war on cancer’ in 1971.   The war was lost. The money was spent; the patients suffered; the patients died.

This is because cancer patients do not die from primary tumors.  We know that metastases are what kills 90% of cancer patients. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are suspected to be the cause of almost if not all of the metastases.

Yet, most oncologists focus on the primary tumor as if eradicating it will save the patient. They even recommend radiation to get rid of the pesky cells in a breast, for example. They offer chemotherapy to chase down lingering cancer cells.

But cancer stem cells are not eliminated by radiation or chemotherapy, and worse, these treatments can actually make them stronger.  Vitamin C has been found to kill cancer cells and do no harm to the patient –and it does not empower CSCs.  AND, unlike chemotherapy and radiation, we now know that it has the potential to kill the stem cells.

Oral High Dose Vitamin C Kills Cancer Stem Cells

Vitamin C has long been thought to be an effective addition to cancer protocols.  New research has found that oral high dose vitamin C given in conjunction with the common antibiotic doxycycline can kill cancer stem cells.[i]  Doxycycline kills cancer stem cells by suppressing the production of key DNA proteins driving these cells from oxygen to sugar metabolism (the process of glycolysis). In cancer cells, high-dose vitamin C treatment induces cell death by inhibiting glycolysis and thus interrupting the cell’s food supply (energy).  Plus, while doxycycline kills many cancer cells, others become resistant. The study found resistant cells were then destroyed by oral vitamin C. According to the researchers, the oral dose needed would be 3000 mg of C, taken four times daily.

Importantly, for those of you who, like me, prefer not to take pharmaceuticals, natural compounds such as oils extracted from oregano and thyme mimic doxycycline, and have been found to be just as effective. [ii]

For more information on utilizing high dose vitamin C, please read High Dose Vitamin C: The Other Cancer Therapy.

However, it is important to know that in high doses, oral vitamin C is just as effective (or possibly even more so) than Intravenous Vitamin C (IVC). This is important as IVC can be very expensive. You can consume high levels of oral C without the typical bowel intolerance by using Liposomal C or  Sodium Ascorbate. My two favorite brands of liposomal C are Mercola  and  Lypo-Spheric .  You can also make it at home.  One trip to google will provide DIY methods.

If you don’t know your options, you don’t have any.”    —Elyn Jacobs, Cancer Coach

cancer deception

This past June, Dr. Michael Schachter presented at the 2016 International Conference: The Latest Developments in Integrative Cancer Therapies, held in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia. (He has been lecturing on this topic for years, throughout the United States and elsewhere.)

A major thesis of his presentation was that alternative treatment protocols have the potential to be competitive if not superior to conventional treatments. They should be considered as primary– not merely supplementary options for treatment.

Losing the Cancer War

Dr. Schachter stated we are losing the “war on cancer” as declared by President Nixon in the early 1970’s, with little improvement in the death rate and higher incidence of many cancers. The reason for this is that the cancer effort was really misfocused from the start. One problem is that there has been an emphasis on trying to cure cancer rather than on preventing it. Another problem is that treatment emphasized patent-able toxic drugs and radiation without paying sufficient attention to relatively non-toxic natural approaches like low dose Naltrexone,  IV Vitamin C, Salvestrols and others. Clearly, preventive strategies have worked for reducing the incidence and mortality of heart disease and stroke, but the medical establishment has put up severe resistance to the idea that we can best manage cancer by preventing it.

In fact, Dr. Schachter was quick to point out that despite the billions of dollars spent, there has been virtually no change in the death rates from cancer from 1950 to date. This is in stark contrast to the approximately 70% reduction in deaths from other conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

The Five-Year Survival Yardstick

Certainly, the five-year survival rate for cancer has increased, but that number is misleading—it provides no clue as to how many survivors are free of their disease. Included in this number are hundreds of thousands of people who will battle cancer to the five-year mark and beyond, only to have endured one toxic protocol after another. [Editor’s note: and frequently poor quality of life. Surviving is not the same as thriving!]

Furthermore, because diagnostic tests are finding more cancers at an early stage, more patients are being treated at an early stage. This translates to more patients making this five-year mark. However, this is at a stiff cost—for example, in the case of breast cancer, earlier benchmarking means more harmful testing and many unnecessary biopsies when something suspicious comes up on a mammogram. But a significant number of these early stage patients will be re-diagnosed as “late stage” six to ten years from their first diagnosis. And a patient who dies after a grueling six-year battle with cancer is nevertheless placed in the “survived” category because she has survived more than five years from the time of diagnosis. So you see, not only is the current standard of care not working, but the methodology of collecting statistics is flawed.

And although more patients are living longer today, only a small portion of that longevity has come from advances in conventional cancer treatment. Despite the endless procession of “wonder drugs,” the deadliest of cancers are still as deadly now as they were at the start of “the war.”

Limits of Drug Therapy

What the failure of the “war on cancer” implies is that pretty much every agent in the fight against cancer—those myriad compounds that have set the research community abuzz and which have generated billions of dollars in profits — have had only a modest effect on long-term patient outcomes.

The latest progress in anti-cancer drugs seems to be with targeted therapies. This approach uses patented medications to inhibit or block biochemical pathways that play a role in cancer growth and spread. Most generics of these medications end in “mab” (monoclonal antibodies) or “nib” (small molecules). Examples are: Herceptin = Trastuzumab and Avastin = Bevacizumab (monoclonal antibodies) and Gleevec = Imatinib and Tarceva = Erlotinib (small molecules). The problem is that because there are many pathways within a cancer, these drugs have only limited effectiveness, and they also have undesirable side effects. Furthermore, since these pathways are used for normal cell functions as well, strong inhibition of a cancer pathway may cause severe complications in healthy cells. Moreover, many of these cancer pathways can be blocked with natural substances with much fewer side effects.

The cancer industry wants you to believe that its drugs are useful, and oncologists are joyful when a patient’s tumor shrinks on drug treatment. The problem is that shrinking tumors has little to do with improving the long-term survival of patients. It is not the initial tumor that kills people but rather the metastasis of the cancer cells. Aggressive cells break off from the primary tumor site and travel to the bones, brain, liver, lungs, or to some other vital area of the body. Even if an entire tumor is removed, and even if the nearby lymph nodes are negative for cancer, microscopic cells often recolonize elsewhere and are not found until later. According to Dr. Schachter, metastasis is what kills. [Editor’s note: Most cancer patients do not die from their disease at all, but rather from malnutrition, toxemia, and/or infections.]

Unfortunately, cancer treatments such as chemo and radiation not target the very cells responsible for metastases — the cancer stem cells – and in fact may encourage them to grow faster. This is one of the main reasons that conventional treatments like radiation and chemotherapy produce such poor results in the treatment of stage IV metastases (cancers that have spread to distant organs). A promising approach to this problem — though generally ignored by conventional oncologists — is the use of relatively non-toxic, anti-inflammatory herbs and nutrients. Substances that target cancer stem cells like black cumin, curcumin, broccoli extracts, vitamin D, and many others can play an important role. For more on this topic, please read Cancer Stem Cells and Progression of Disease: What You Need to Know Now.

Furthermore, we now know that conventional treatments sharply raise the risk for heart problems, stroke, and secondary cancers. Children are particularly at risk. Pediatric survivors have a six-fold greater risk of getting a second cancer, and adults face significant risk for complications as well.

No great insight is required to see that that our cancer-strategy is flawed. The ultimate problem lies in the cancer culture itself.

Challenging Traditional Views of Cancer

Surprisingly, decades ago some scientists viewed the cancer mechanism differently from the vast majority of cancer theorists. In recent years, the theory of cancer as outlined by Otto Warburg in the 1920’s has become more widely accepted. According to a written statement by Dr. Warburg,

“But nobody today can say that one does not know what cancer and its prime cause [are]. On the contrary, there is no disease whose prime cause is better known, so that today ignorance is no longer an excuse that one cannot do more about prevention. That prevention of cancer will come there is no doubt, for man wishes to survive. But how long prevention will be avoided depends on how long the prophets of agnosticism will succeed in inhibiting the application of scientific knowledge in the cancer field. In the meantime, millions of men must die of cancer unnecessarily.” [i]

— Dr. Otto Warburg, Medical Nobel Prize winner, Lindau, Germany, 1966

In 1986, John Bailar, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) statistician, also had the nerve to question the progress in the war on cancer, although he was severely ridiculed and shunned for doing so. In his 1986 paper “Progress Against Cancer?” Bailar argued that cancer research focuses too much on treatment and not enough on prevention, which would be far more effective. Then in 1997 in his paper “Cancer Undefeated” he concluded that “the effect of new treatments for cancer on mortality has been largely disappointing.”[ii]

In 1996, Michael Sporn, in an article printed in The Lancet, declared the war on cancer a failure. [iii] He predicted that the NCI would not achieve its stated target of a 50% reduction in cancer deaths by the year 2000. Sadly, he was right. Sporn believed that cancer could be chemically stopped, slowed, or reversed in its earliest pre-invasive stages. He even coined the widely-used term chemoprevention to distinguish cancer intervention from treatment. His was a truly radical idea in the cancer community.

Sporn’s goal was to dislodge the theory that cancer is something that just happens suddenly, that it is even a disease state. He did not subscribe to the idea that one either has cancer or not. Oncologists treat cancer, but logically, cancer is not an event of any kind. It does not suddenly happen upon diagnosis. It comes from years of dis-ease—it is a process. It begins when normal differentiation of a cell fails, when proper communication halts, and when the environment encourages cancer development. Long before cancer is detected, cancer is brewing—through a process known as carcinogenesis. It is nonsense to believe that the process has not been under way for many years.

Time for Change

Thankfully, our understanding of the nature of cancer and cancer treatment are in the process of undergoing major changes — though for economic and social reasons, there is tremendous resistance to these changes. Resistance comes from pharmaceutical companies, organized medicine, insurance companies, institutes of medical education, and the media. But if the path to cancer is something we can understand, why not treat it that way? It would be prudent to address the smoke before the fire burns down the house—to heal the patient at the very first signs of disease.

What if we could look at risk factors and markers, use diet instead of drugs, and use targeted supplements to prevent the development and progression of cancer? What if we were to heal the person with the cancer instead of just targeting the cancer? Surely, we would then stand a greater chance of winning the war. What if treatment for cancer patients started with a focus on lifestyle and nutritional changes? Considering that in many cases poor nutritional and lifestyle choices have contributed to the development of cancer, it would seem prudent to address such issues. Rather than just focusing on toxic conventional treatments, we could use various nutrients, herbs, and other non-toxic supplements in a synergistic way to improve the results with conventional treatment or, in some cases, instead of conventional treatment.

For sure, it is time to question the cancer strategy. It’s time for change.

Adrenal Fatigue and Breast Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cell Phones, EMF's, Tamoxifen on June 7, 2017 at 9:52 am

The adrenal glands are widely known for the production of the stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline. But what many people do not realize is that the adrenals also produce cancer-protective progesterone.

Unfortunately, when the body is under stress, progesterone production is reduced as the body orders cortisol in order to reduce that stress. This (and other related consequences) puts a person at significantly higher risk of breast cancer as well as the progression of the dis-ease.

Fight or Flight

When your body is under stress, the adrenal glands release the hormones adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones provide the “fight or flight” response that protects you when you are in danger.  While this could be helpful if you are being chased by a ferocious animal, in this modern world that doesn’t happen often.  However, we do face many modern-day stressors, often 24/7.  Over time, being in the fight or flight mode from morning until night can wreak havoc on your health.  While that boost of cortisol might save you from a tiger, the constant flow of cortisol day in and day out will wear out your adrenal glands.

Adrenals and Hormones

Hormonal imbalances associated with progesterone deficiency are directly tied into the health of the adrenal glands. The more stress in your life, the more you tax your adrenals.

When your body is under stress and orders more cortisol, the body uses its resources (pregnenolone and progesterone) to make cortisol instead of progesterone.  And actually, the adrenal glands literally steal progesterone to make cortisol, which leads to lower levels of progesterone. This then leads to estrogen dominance, which increases our risk for breast cancer.  This is especially a problem for most-menopausal women, whose hormone production relies on the adrenals instead of the ovaries.

Most significantly, it is shown that high amounts of estrogen (especially chemical estrogens) can increase one’s risk of breast cancer.  However, while estrogen has been associated with breast (and endometrial) cancer, progesterone has strong cancer-preventive effects.

However, the body’s way of counterbalancing estrogen is progesterone. When this balancing mechanism is dysfunctional due to a lack of progesterone, a myriad of health-related problems can arise, including breast cancer.

You may have read that progesterone also fuels breast cancer, and you would be correct in believing that. However, this only applies to synthetic progestins, not your own progesterone (and for most this includes protective bioidentical progesterone). To learn more, please read my article The Truth About Progesterone and Breast Cancer.

Notably, progesterone is not only protective of the breast, uterus, and ovaries, but it has a calming effect (reduces stress) and contributes to the formation of new bone tissue.

To learn more about estrogen and progesterone and their role in breast cancer, please request my Estrogen and Detoxification Handouts.

How to Tell If You Have Adrenal Fatigue

If you have been under constant stress for a prolonged period of time, you may be at the point where adrenals are fatigued and your hormones are significantly out of balance.

Adrenal Fatigue is simply your body’s way of preventing you from expending energy it does not have.  It is your body alerting you to slow down and give it the nurturing support it needs.

Adrenal fatigue symptoms are the body’s cry for you to take corrective action at the root level. Not recognizing these symptoms can have grave consequences, including breast cancer and the progression of the dis-ease.

Are YOU Suffering from Adrenal Exhaustion?

Answer yes or no to the following…the more ‘yes’ answers you have, the more exhausted your adrenals (there are other symptoms as well, but these are some of the most common ones):

  • Do you suffer from morning fatigue or low energy?
  • Do you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep?
  • Do you crave salty, fatty, or sweet foods?
  • Do you have blood sugars issues (hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia)?
  • Do you have an afternoon slump between the hours of 2 and 5pm?
  • Do you often have muscle aches or pains for no apparent reason?
  • Do you have an increased sense of irritability?
  • Have you noticed an increase in belly fat and an inability to get rid of it?
  • Do you have a decreased sex drive?
  • Do you have low blood pressure?
  • Do you have low body temperature or feel cold all of the time?
  • Do you have an increase in mood swings and or depression? Lack of enthusiasm?
  • Do you experience dizziness when getting up quickly from a lying or sitting position?
  • Do you suffer from increased allergies even if you have never had allergies before? Do you have food allergies?
  • Do you have increased PMS or menopausal symptoms?
  • Do you use a cell phone or computer in the evening?

 EMFs and Adrenal Fatigue

Cell phone EMFs stimulate the body’s stress system, decreasing your ability to wind down and fall asleep.  Then once you finally do fall asleep, the EMFs interfere with the deep sleep your body needs to recover and repair. This is especially a problem if you sleep with your phone nearby and you don’t resist the urge to check messages when you wake up during the night.  Plus, poor sleep causes the adrenals to pump more cortisol…which keeps you awake longer and causes you to wake up after you fall asleep…one big vicious cycle.

This also applies to the use of computers in the evening, or gasp, during the night—you know the type, they wake up and feel the need to go online before going back to sleep—don’t let that be you.

What You Can Do NOW

First off, it is important to consume a clean diet loaded with organic fruits and vegetables.  Drink and cook with pure water. Avoid processed foods, conventional meats and dairy products as well as fake foods, such as soy cheeses and ‘meat substitutes’.  Despite what the vegan cookbooks would lead you to believe, these ‘foods’ are highly processed dangerous foods. if you choose to eat vegan, use nuts, seeds, beans, and other whole foods as your protein source. And don’t forget that skipping meals or eating junk food can throw your blood sugar off.

Relax the mind. Engage in moderate but not intense or excessive exercise as that taxes the adrenals and the immune system.

Do:

  • stabilize blood sugar
  • heal your gut and optimize liver function
  • get more reset and quality sleep
  • keep a gratitude journal
  • engage in moderate exercise and mild strength training
  • realization, meditation and relax the mind
  • consume a healthy diet with supplement support
  • change your perception-we experience more stress when we allow thoughts to create negative feelings

Avoid:

  • rigid thinking; unresolved emotions
  • sleep deprivation
  • energy draining activities; toxic relationships
  • excessive exercise
  • nutrient deficiencies, including protein and healthy fats
  • sugar, alcohol, and caffeine
  • infections, parasites, Candida, heavy metals
  • multitasking, over-working
  • intolerant, inflammatory, addictive foods (gluten, soy, dairy, corn, trans fats, GMOs

However, even the cleanest, most amazing diet and lifestyle can use some help.  The following are some supplemental boosts for adrenal health.

  • Aswaganda—an adaptogen (this means that it reacts to your body’s stress signals and exerts a normalizing effect) that helps normalize your body’s reaction to stress and anxiety. It also helps alleviate brain frog and memory problems associated with chronic stress. Excitingly, it also helps repair damaged brain cells and synapses, which means the repaired cells will then be able to receive messages better, so the body runs more smoothly. Aswaganda also supports the liver, immune system, and adrenals, regulates blood sugar, and lowers cortisol and CRP (C-Reactive Protein)
  • B6—also known as pantothenic acid, helps provide the extra energy your adrenal glands need to respond to stress, and helps repair previous damage to these glands
  • Magnolia extract– mostly known for its anti-stress and cortisol-balancing effects. Contains honkiol, a compound from magnolia bark with multiple anti-cancer functions, including tumor cell death. Magnolia Extract
  • Cordyceps—an adaptogen that fights fatigue and boosts energy. When you are under stress, it helps balance the levels of cortisol so you can cope more easily
  • Rhodiola— balances the body’s stress-response system. Rhodiola is not advised for those with Bipolar or mania.
  • Siberian ginseng—an adaptogen that helps balance stress hormones and rejuvenates adrenal function. Helps decrease anxiety, improve sleep, and reduce irritability
  • Licorice root — helps regulate cortisol, which is needed for the stress-response. Cortisol is not all bad. In fact, the same cortisol your adrenals produce when you are under stress is also responsible for regulating your immune system. When your adrenals are fatigued and don’t produce enough cortisol, you can end up with an enhanced response we know as the allergic response.  That’s right, stressed adrenals can result in more allergy issues. Licorice root also helps prevent the liver from breaking down cortisol so it can be used more efficiently.
  • Schisandra — aids in enhancing mental performance, handling stress better, and generally being more resistant to stress; helps to decrease fatigue. (Do not take with Tamoxifen)
  • Passion Flower — useful as a soothing sleep-aid and in supporting relaxation in times of stress.

Our Hard-Working Adrenals

As you can see from the chart below, the adrenals not only produce our reproductive hormones– estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone– but also the anti-aging hormone DHEA. When your body is under stress and needs more cortisol, the body has to direct more of its resources (pregnenolone and progesterone) to make that cortisol, leaving less to fill these other needs. (The adrenals also produce aldosterone which regulates blood pressure, sodium, and potassium.)

adrenals1

Importantly, the adrenals need cholesterol to make these hormones. So, please do not be so quick to reduce ‘high’ cholesterol levels, but do work towards reducing stress so your body can keep these hormones in balance.

The constant production of cortisol and adrenaline at the expense of other important hormones keeps us in that catabolic state which affects our overall health. Under chronic stress we age faster and our bodies wear down and deteriorate faster.  When we manage our stress, and aren’t over-producing cortisol and adrenaline, we allow our body to make DHEA, testosterone and the other growth hormones that keep us healthy and allow the body to repair and rebuild.

Epstein Barr Virus and the Development of Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, Breast Cancer, Uncategorized on January 24, 2017 at 4:02 pm

The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is one of the most common viral infections in humans. It is also one of the most prolific–over 95% of adults carry this virus. While originally linked to lymphoma, subsequent research has linked EBV to stomach cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and many others, including breast cancer.

Once you are infected with EBV, it remains dormant in the body forever, often asymptomatic. For some, this will not be a problem.  For others, it can result in long-term consequences, including dramatically raising one’s risk of cancer as well as aggressive progression of the disease.

When reactivated, EBV can present with symptoms such as cold sores or flu-like symptoms. But again, often there are no symptoms—yet the virus is at work, leaving genetic scars on our cells. Molecules produced by EBV can send infected cells into overdrive, telling them to keep dividing.  Importantly, EBV does not initiate cancer on its own — there are other elements at play. It is a combination of genes and diet along with the EBV infection that create the perfect storm for cancer.

Herpetic viruses such as EBV are so often behind autoimmune disorders such as lupus, MS, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Hence, many with autoimmune issues will also develop cancer.

The Immune System is Our First Line of Defense Against Infections

With EBV, it can also be a bit of the chicken and the egg theory.  Fighting the infection itself could exhaust the immune response, which might hinder detection and destruction of cancer cells, allowing them to replicate.  Or, it could be that an already weak immune system, combined with a poor diet, leaves the door open to infection and flare-ups of dormant Epstein Barr and the development and progression of cancer.

Researchers are working on ways to uncloak the virus to immune cells in hopes that this will rid the body of EBV, rather than leave dormant infection around to cause problems. Will that mean another controversial vaccine? Possibly.

Food Matters

However, there are many natural substances that can suppress viral reactivation. For more information on EBV and its link to cancer, please read the following article I wrote for The Truth About Cancer: Epstein Barr Virus Connection to Breast Cancer & Autoimmune Disorders. In it you will also learn about the triggers for reactivation as well as the dietary choices, supplements, and herbs that suppress the EBV and help your body defend itself against cancer.

What You Need to Know About Mutations in the p53 Cancer Tumor Suppressor Gene

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, colon cancer, High Dose Vitamin C and Cancer, Radiation on January 3, 2017 at 2:34 pm

The word mutation just doesn’t sound like something good. By definition, a mutation is a permanent change in DNA. Mutations, for the most part, are harmless except when they lead to tumor formation.

Likely you have heard about BRCA mutations. BRCA genes are tumor suppressor genes. BRCA mutations can increase one’s risk for cancers of the breast and ovaries. However, these mutations are only responsible for about 5-10% of all breast cancers and about 15% of ovarian cancers. But, the little-known p53 mutation affects far more people. About 50% of all cancers have a mutated p53 gene.

What is P53?
The p53 protein is located in the nucleus of cells throughout the body, where it attaches (binds) directly to DNA. (It is actually the TP53 gene that provides instructions for making the tumor protein p53 but for simplicity, I will say p53.) P53 regulates cell division by keeping cells from growing and dividing too fast or in an uncontrolled way.

P53 plays a critical role in determining whether damaged DNA will be repaired or a damaged cell will self-destruct (undergo apoptosis). If the DNA can be repaired, p53 activates other genes to fix the damage. If the DNA cannot be repaired, this protein prevents the cell from dividing and signals it to undergo apoptosis. By stopping cells with mutated or damaged DNA from dividing, p53 helps prevent the development of tumors.

Mutated P53
P53 mutations lead to a version of p53 that cannot regulate cell growth and division effectively. Specifically, the altered protein is unable to trigger apoptosis in cells with mutated or damaged DNA.

DNA can be damaged by agents such as toxic chemicals, radiation such as gamma rays, X-rays — even UV light can interact with compounds in the cell generating free radicals which cause chemical damage to DNA.

Since all cells in our body contain DNA, there are lots of places for mutations such as p53 to occur. When p53 does not operate properly, damaged DNA can replicate, producing mutations and DNA rearrangements that contribute to the development of a highly transformed, metastatic cell. Many cancer cells inactivate p53, allowing the cells to evade death and continue proliferating up to becoming a tumor.

Mutant p53 proteins not only lose their tumor suppressive activities but often escalate the development of cancerous tumors by providing them with growth and survival mechanisms. Interestingly, mutations in the p53 gene have been shown to occur at different phases of the cancer process, contributing to tumor initiation, promotion, aggressiveness, and metastasis.

P53 mutations contribute to risk of brain tumors and breast, prostate, colon and other cancers. Mutations in p53 gene usually correlate with poor outcome and early recurrence in cancer.

Enough of the bad news.

The Good News
What is really exciting is that this repair gene, p53, which protects cells from becoming cancerous, can be highly activated by many natural substances—substances that do not have the negative side effects of drug therapies. The ability to activate p53 within cells may halt cell proliferation, or even cause cancer cell death.

watercressFor example, cruciferous vegetables (especially watercress with its high content of PEITC) have been found to support p53. PEITC (phenethylisothyanate) decreases the levels of mutated p53 and helps to restore the normal activity of this protein. Vitamin C is another promoter of P53, which is one of the reasons intravenous Vitamin C (IVC) and high-dose oral C therapies are so effective against cancer.
The resveratrol in red grapes and red wine (organic please, and research shows dark, red wines are best) also activates the P53 gene. IP6 has been shown to alter the expression of p53. Zinc helps protect the p53 gene against cancer-forming mutations. Selenium can activate p53 in response to genetic damage, helping the cell to repair its DNA. Herbs such as sage, rosemary, ginger, curcumin, and ashwaganda support p53. Thymoquinone extracted from black seed triggers apoptotic cell death in colorectal and other cancers cells via the p53- dependent mechanism. Anthocyanins, abundant in red  onions, inhibit the damage that impaired p53 can cause on cells and tissue. Anthocyanins are also found in blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, eggplant, and avocado.

P53 Supporters:
• Cruciferous vegetables, especially watercress
IP6
Resveratrol
• Herbs such as sage, rosemary, ginger, curcumin, and ashwaganda
• EFA’s from omega 3 fatty acids (please use caution with fish oil supplements as they can be toxic). For a plant based formula, you could take BodyBio Balance Oil.
• Licorice
• Mistletoe
Vitamin D
Selenium
• Vitamin C
Zinc
Black Seed
Clinoptilolite (a special form of Zeolite)
On the other hand, processed foods, refined flours, and sugars will impair P53. Smokey flavoring and smoked foods can also damage DNA. Chemicals such as benzene and perchloroethylene, two volatile organic compounds, negatively affect p53, possibly causing them to stimulate rather than suppress cell proliferation.

The late Integrative Oncologist Dr Mitchell Gaynor, MD was famous for his passion for explaining that we can change the way our genes behave by making good dietary choices. For more gene-changing foods and lifestyle habits read Dr. Gaynor’s book, The Gene Therapy Plan, Taking Control of Your Genetic Destiny with Diet and Lifestyle.

P53 and BRCA are not the only genetic mutations that increase cancer risk. For example, mutations in th e CHEK2 gene are associated with an increased risk of developing many types of cancer, including breast, colon, prostate, and other cancers — sometimes at young ages. If you have a history of hereditary cancer you might benefit from genetic testing for CHEK2 and others.

Testing
You can request to be tested for the p53 mutation. The test is called the p53 Gene Mutation Analysis, Cell Based, offered by labs such as Quest Diagnostics. If your insurance company does not accept Quest or another lab that offers this test, you can petition your carrier for a Network Gap Exception.
You may need to consult a genetic counselor if your oncologist does not routinely check for mutations as these tests are not part of your typical pathology report.

Why You Need to Know about IP-6 if You Have Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, Uncategorized on December 17, 2016 at 5:38 pm

ip6The B-vitamin inositol and its derivative IP-6 (Inositol hexaphosphate) is an anti-oxidant with many health benefits for human health. It is important for regulating vital cellular functions such as signal transduction, cell proliferation, and differentiation. IP-6 offers significant protection against cancer and it also helps to lower cholesterol, prevent kidney stones, and reduce the complications of cardiovascular disease.

Recently IP-6 has received much attention for its role in cancer prevention and control of tumor growth, progression, and metastasis. IP-6 works by increasing your body’s Natural Killer Cell activity. NK cells target cancerous cells as well as invaders such as virus, bacteria, fungus, and molds. NK cells are also a part of the Th1 immune system, which is commonly depressed in cancer patients. IP-6 has also shown to revert cancer cells back  to normal by its ability to increase the differentiation of malignant cells.

IP-6 is a selective agent against cancer cells. Cancer cells are high in iron content, so IP-6 directs most of its attention to abnormal cells since IP-6 acts as a selective iron chelator. It removes iron from tumor cells (stealing one of its major food sources) which deprives them of their primary growth factor. Importantly, IP-6 does not remove iron from red blood cells which are tightly bound to hemoglobin. Therefore, unlike cancer drugs, healthy cells are not affected by IP-6.

IP-6 and Tumor Suppressor Genes
IP6 has been shown to alter the expression of proteins produced by the p53 (TP53) and p21 genes (cancer suppressor genes) that control cancer growth.

The p53 gene regulates cell division by keeping cells from growing and dividing too fast or in an uncontrolled way. Inactivation of the p53 tumor suppressor is a frequent event in tumorigenesis. In most cases for those with cancer, the p53 gene is mutated, and the accumulation of those mutated proteins is regarded as a hallmark of cancer cells. Mutated P53 cannot regulate cell growth and division effectively. Specifically, the altered protein is unable to trigger apoptosis in cells with mutated or damaged DNA. As a result, DNA damage can accumulate in cells (this is common with CHEK2 mutations).

When the DNA in a cell becomes damaged by things such as toxic chemicals or radiation, P53 plays a critical role in determining whether the DNA will be repaired or the damaged cell will self-destruct (undergo apoptosis).

Mutant p53 proteins not only lose their tumor suppressive activities but often escalate the development of cancerous tumors by providing them with growth and survival mechanisms. Interestingly, mutations in the p53 gene were shown to occur at different phases of the cancer process, contributing to tumor initiation, promotion, aggressiveness, and metastasis.
P21 is controlled by p53, and can be significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis, distant metastases, advanced TNM stage (a classification of cancer staging that stands for: tumor size, describing nearby lymph nodes, and distant metastasis), depth of invasion, and overall survival rate. To read more on p53, click HERE.

IP-6 also inhibits MMP-9 secretions. Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) plays important roles in tumor invasion and angiogenesis. Secretion of MMP-9 has been reported in various cancer types including lung cancer, colon cancer, and breast cancer.

Circulating Tumor Cells

It is important to remember that it is not the primary tumor that kills us, but rather the metastatic disease post-treatment that kills us. When cancer spreads to other areas in the body it is called metastasis. In order to spread, a cancer cell must first detach from the primary cancer and move though the wall of a blood vessel to get into the bloodstream.
These mobile cancer cells are called circulating tumor cells (CTCs). When CTC’s enter the bloodstream, the circulating blood sweeps them along until they stick somewhere, usually in another opportunistic position that enables it to lodge and multiply.
This is a complicated journey as the immune system is designed to rid the host of these cells. Therefore, some of the time CTC’s are not problematic. However, in a host (you) with cancer and therefore with the likelihood of a weak or dysfunctional immune system, well, you can see how the risk increases. (A simple blood test can determine the existence of circulating tumor cells in the body. At this time, the only lab I know of that will readily offer this test is Quest Diagnostics. If your insurance company does not use Quest, you may need to petition them for it.)
Hence, reducing circulating tumor cells (CTC’s) and using other strategies to prevent metastases should be the focus of treatment once individuals have treated the primary tumor and are addressing the primary cause of the dis-ease. IP-6 seems to be the new kid on the block when it comes to targeting CTC’s (along with Modified Citrus Pectin*).

It is well known that the potent antioxidant and immune enhancing properties of IP6 can play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of cancer cells. It Sadly, IP-6 goes unused as a cancer treatment, which makes no sense. Further, IP-6 enhances the efficacy of cancer drugs such as Adriamycin (a popular chemotherapy) and tamoxifen. Yet again, it goes unused by the traditional medical community even as an adjunct therapy.
It is up to you, the educated patient, to be sure you are taking advantage of all that is available to you to heal from your cancer.

Summary of IP-6 benefits:
• Inhibits cell proliferation and progression
• Helps stop cancer growth
• Induces differentiation of malignant cells
• Supports the p21 and p53 genes (tumor suppressor genes) that control cancer growth
• Inhibits metastasis by interfering with the CTC adhesion, migration, and invasion
• Induces apoptosis (cell death) in many cancer cell lines
• Inhibits angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth for tumors)

IP-6 is easily absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and has been found to be safe. It can be found in many plant sources and in high-fiber foods such as seeds, bran, cereals and legumes. It can also be taken in supplement form. You can find IP-6 in most health and drug stores. However, don’t get the cheap versions of this stuff—be sure to buy a reputable brand. For your convenience, you can find IP-6 here on Amazon.

*Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP): Helps with detoxification and inhibits circulating tumor cells (CTC’s) from latching onto the lining of blood vessel walls, reducing the risk of metastases.

Flaxseed: The Anti-Cancer Power Seed

In Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Alternatives to Tamoxifen, Breast Cancer, Healing Cancer Naturally, Hormone Balance, Uncategorized on February 29, 2016 at 3:38 pm

As explained in my post Flaxseed: Better Than Tamoxifen for Breast Cancer, flaxseed is quite beneficial in the prevention and treatment for breast cancer. However, flaxseed has also been found to inhibit the growth and metastasis of prostate cancer and offers protection against colon and other cancers.

Flaxseed contains lignans — phytochemical compounds that are concentrated in the fibrous hulls of flaxseeds. These lignans have a significant impact on the body’s ability to manage cancer. Studies have shown that lignans significantly reduce tumor growth by increasing cell death, decreasing angiogenesis and many other processes. (See Flaxseed for more information.)

Flaxseed is high in Omega 3’s and well as antioxidants, further defeating cancer by supporting immune function and reducing inflammation. Flaxseed also contains considerable Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which has also been found to reduce inflammation and cancer growth. The fiber content of flax is yet another of its virtues. Fiber has been implicated in protection against cancers such as colon cancer.

When I went gluten free, I began experimenting with high flax gluten-free substitutes.  While there are plenty of ‘gluten-free’ options at the market, most are filled with undesirable ingredients.

Below are a few of my favorite recipes (you can also add ground flax to oatmeal, cereals and other favorite dishes):

Flaxseed Muffins

One muffin will provide you with 20 grams flaxseed—eat one or two daily (2 if you add apples or walnuts as the flax content per muffin will be slightly lower as the recipe will yield more than 12 muffins).

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flaxseed, coarsely ground (freshly ground, not pre-ground)
  • 3-4 teaspoons stevia (or ¼ cup coconut sugar or maple syrup)
  • 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon fine Pink Himalayan or Celtic sea salt
  • 5 large eggs
  • ½ cup water, room temperature
  • ⅓ cup melted coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Optional:

  • Chopped unpeeled apples
  • Chopped walnuts
  • Coarse Celtic sea salt for sprinkling on top prior to baking
  • Whey powder– plain, chocolate or vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a 12-count muffin pan with non-bleached paper liners. Set aside.
  2. Combine flax seed with sweetener, baking powder, cinnamon, whey (if using) and salt in a large bowl. Whisk to combine fully and set aside.
  3. Put eggs, water, oil and vanilla extract into a blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds, until foamy.
  4. Transfer liquid mixture to the bowl with the flaxseed mixture. Stir with a spatula, just until incorporated. The mixture will be very fluffy. Once incorporated, allow to sit for 3 minutes.
  5. Spoon mixture into prepared muffin pan (if you add chopped walnuts or apple, you may need more than one muffin pan; alternatively you can make disc-shaped ‘muffin tops’ by spreading batter on a parchment lined pan. These can be used as toast for eggs, crusts for pizza, etc.
  6. Bake muffins for 13-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and remove muffins from the cavities immediately and place on a cooling rack.
  7. Muffins can be toasted or frozen. Keeps in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Super Seed Bread

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup rolled oats (omit and increase flax to ¾ cup, if desired)
  • ¼ cup raw buckwheat groats (omit and increase flax to ¾ cup, if desired)
  • ¼ cup chia seeds *
  • ½ cup flaxseed
  • ¼ cup raw sunflower seeds, sprouted, if available
  • ¼ cup raw pepita seeds (pumpkin seeds)
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon fine Celtic or Pink Himalayan salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon
  • Coarse Celtic sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line a 9” square cake pan with two pieces of parchment paper, one going each way
  2. Place the oats and buckwheat groats (if modifying to include more flax, use ¾ cup flax and ¼ cup oats or groats or a combination of the two) in a high speed blender or individually in a coffee grinder until they resemble a fine powder
  3. Grind flaxseed
  4. Add remaining ingredients to bowl; stir until well combined
  5. Stir in one and ¼ cups water until well combined; the mixture will be watery
  6. Pour into the pan and spread out evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle with coarse Celtic sea salt
  7. Bake, uncovered, for about 25 minutes, or until firm to the touch. Let the bread cool in the pan for 5 minutes and then transfer to a cooling rack for 5-10 minutes.  Slice into fourths (or eights) and enjoy, or allow to cool.  Wrap individually and freeze, or enjoy for up to two days, stored in the refrigerator.

Notes:

I recommend you play around with this recipe.  Alter it to fit your needs and add different spices as desired.  Fenugreek, cumin and other spices are wonderful adds to this recipe.

This bread is also wonderful toasted, served with eggs or topped with hummus, nut butter or pesto.

If cut into eighths, each slice will yield you over 1Tbs of flax and 10 grams of protein, more if you add whey!  Eat two slices (1/4 of the bread) and you will have your 25 grams.

*Chia seeds are loaded with inflammation reducing Omega3’s

Pizza Crust Recipe (also excellent topped with eggs):eggs on toast

For an amazing gluten free, flax filled crust for pizza or eggs, check out my pizza recipe.  You can also increase the flax in this recipe.  Just reduce the garbanzo bean (or quinoa) flour to less than one tablespoon and use 2-3 tablespoons of freshly ground flax and 1 tablespoon chia seeds. Add coarse Celtic sea salt, 1 teaspoon coconut oil and 1/3 to ½ cup freshly chopped herbs and scallions(something I have been doing and it is a great way to include progesterone boosting, anticancer power to your meal). Add in spices of your choice—fenugreek, cayenne, cumin, cinnamon are some suggestions. Use this crust for eggs or pizza.

For a delicious flax pancake recipe, Click Here.

IMPORTANT — given the state of confusion many people seem to be in with conflicting information on the internet, please understand that estrogen is ESSENTIAL to your health–EVEN for those with ER- PR breast cancer.  Please do not allow your doctor to tell you otherwise. However, remember that flax is a phytoestrogen–and is protective against cancer. Raising progesterone to bring the body back into balance is VERY important and can be done with lifestyle efforts. Progesterone is protective against breast cancer (more on this in the next post). Note that synthetic hormones should never be used.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW CAN HURT YOU

In Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Dental Toxins and Cancer on November 20, 2015 at 8:27 am

I am frequently asked for remedial recommendations for dis-ease causing dental work. Most of the time it is for the safe removal of mercury-laden fillings, but many people do not realize dis-ease resulting from dental work goes well beyond fillings and root-canals.  Please enjoy this guest post by Dr. Michael J. Olmstead, D.D.S.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You

By Dr. Michael J. Olmstead, D.D.S.

Health care has made many advances over the years and dentistry has been at the forefront of the development of new techniques and materials. Unfortunately, some of these dental procedures have unintended consequences associated with them. As well, some dental conditions if left untreated, will result in very significant health risks. Below we will briefly touch on some of these issues. Please note that it is beyond the scope of this presentation to include all of the scientific research sources, but the body of study in each of these areas is considerable and growing.

    Periodontal Disease

It has been well established for over 25 years that the gum disease which affects 80-90 percent of adults and 40 percent of children plays a major role in many systemic conditions. Scientific research has isolated diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, abnormal pregnancy outcomes, gastric, arthritis, kidney disease and duodenal ulcers as some of the problems that periodontal (gum) disease is strongly associated with. Recently, studies have strongly connected it with pancreatic and kidney cancers well as colorectal cancer being triggered by a bacteria found in dental plaque. The reason appears to be the bacteria and inflammatory by products associated with gum disease circulate in the blood stream, digestive and respiratory systems.

The statistics are startling! If you have even moderate gum disease and are pregnant, you have a 7X greater risk of an APO (abnormal birth weight pregnancy outcome). Your chance of a coronary event is 4X greater. Contemporary  chronic disease (80 percent of adults have one or more) theories are telling us that inflammation is a primary, and maybe, the largest single cause. For many people the largest source of this inflammation is in their oral cavity. In short, you can not protect yourself from life threatening health problems without good gum tissue health.

SOLUTION: Establish a home care program of scrapping your tongue, flossing and brushing at least 2x/day. Do this immediately upon arising and as the last thing before bed. Have your teeth cleaned 2,3 x /year. If you have swollen, sore, bleeding or receded gums, seek professional care immediately.

     Mercury

Mercury is one of the most dangerous heavy metals in general use in dentistry. It is not correct to say it is a toxin, because there is no threshold upon which it will not cause cellular damage. Therefore, toxicologists define this more correctly as a poison. It also accumulates in the system, and is not easily cleansed away by normal body function.

The “silver” fillings that are still widely used and present in most peoples mouths are 50 percent mercury by weight and only 30 percent silver. They should really be called mercury fillings.  Contrary to some opinions, it is not locked in the filling, but leaks out and accumulates in various tissues of the body. An interesting study showed that it was found to be present in all breast cancer tumor cells sampled.

Inhibiting our immune system, specifically damaging brain cells, kidney disfunction, neurologic disorders, motor disturbances and psychologic disorders (depression, mood swings) are some of the negative effects of mercury on the body.

SOLUTION: Do not have any new amalgam (“silver”) fillings placed in your mouth. If you currently have amalgam fillings, consider having them removed by a dentist skilled in a safe removal protocol (this is very important).

       Local Anesthetics

Local anesthetics are a necessary part of modern dental care. But what is not commonly understood is the metabolism of the anesthetic once it has served its purpose. Two thirds of local dental anesthetics produce anilines in the body. This is a highly carcinogenic chemical. Exposure to it in animals will cause breast cancer as well as prostrate, brain, sarcomas and leukemia. This, anilines will do 99 percent of the time. One carpal or one shot of Lidocaine local anesthetic produces aniline equivalent to that found in 84,000 cigarettes.

SOLUTION: As an alternative, articaine or septocaine can be used. They do not create anilines in the body. Although there are always side effects to any drug given, these are preferable to the most commonly used Lidocaine. Marcaine produces 80 percent less aniline when used as a long acting local anesthetic.

         Triclosan

This chemical is used in toothpaste and hand soaps to control the bacteria. Unfortunately, triclosan is one of the top ten, used on a regular basis, endocrine disputing chemicals. Endocrine disrupting chemicals can promote breast, prostrate, ovarian and testicular cancer. It can also promote the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. It has also been related to thyroid disfunction. It is also present in the rubber and plastic of children toys.

Because the mouth is a very vascular area, it readily absorbs the chemicals that we use for cleaning our mouths.

SOLUTION: Do not use any product that contains this chemical. It will be clearly stated on the label. Do not purchase children toys that say they contain germ fighting”disinfectant” as children will put these in their mouth.

{On a separate topic, 99 percent of breast cancer tissue contained paraben esters. These are chemicals widely used as preservatives in cosmetics.

SOLUTION:Read the labels and do not purchase if it contains any parabens.}

    Fluoride

We consume fluoride from a variety of sources: water, toothpaste, mouth rinses, vitamins, fluoride treatments and prescription medications (antibiotics and mood altering drugs).

There is NO need for fluoride in human nutrition. It does not prevent tooth decay. It does not make bones stronger.

Then what does it do?

  • Accumulates in our long bones increasing the chance of Osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
  • Can cause ADHD
  • Linked to Hypothyroidism
  • Linked to depression
  • Is a potent endocrine disrupter (see above under Triclosan)
  • Lowers IQ
  • Increases coronary artery calcification

SOLUTION: Do not drink fluoridated water, expose your children to fluoride vitamins or treatments, do not take antibiotics or any drugs that contain fluoride and do not use fluoride toothpaste.

Root Canals

There are 15-25 million root canals performed every year in the USA depending on the data source. This is a staggering number when you realize that there are serious risks associated with this commonly accepted dental treatment.

Because it is not possible to permanently disinfect the non-vital tooth, microorganisms and their toxic waste products accumulate in and around these teeth. Certain specific cancer inhibiting proteins are blocked by the toxic effect of root canal treated teeth. This potentiates the development and growth of tumor cells.

It is beyond the scope of this brief article to elaborate more, but suffice it to say root canal filled teeth pose a considerable risk for encouraging many degenerative health conditions.

SOLUTION: Look for other treatment options than root canal treatment. If you have root canals, make absolutely certain they, at the very least, look absent of infection basis x-ray evaluation. If you have chronic health conditions (cancer, arthritis, heart disease, immune system suppression, etc.) consider replacement of these teeth under the guidance of a biocompatible dentist.

As you can see there are many topics relating dental health, materials and procedures to our overall health. In further articles we will discuss dental sealants, bisphosphonates (a drug used for osteoperosis), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (and similar compounds),  oral and throat HPV infection and dental pulpotomies on children.

The Potions Behind the Motions: Healing Elyn

In Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, cancer stem cells and recurrence on October 22, 2015 at 9:50 am

Last week I posted my story of healing from stage 3 breast cancer, Healing Cancer Naturally: Elyn’s Potions and Motions.  In that post I spoke about the healing of my mind–healing the emotional traumas that were making me sick. In this post I get into the nutritional aspect of my healing. Maybe my story helps you with your own journey.

The Potions Behind the Motions

ej pink twoWhile my cancer surely seemed to be an emotionally driven one, I still needed a protocol that would target cancer cells and help prevent the spread of this cancer. I still need to up the ante nutritionally. Working with my oncologist, Dr Mitch Gaynor, and my alternative doctor, Dr Michael Schachter, I devised a protocol of weekly Intravenous Vitamin C treatments in addition to tweaking my targeted supplements. I also worked with Dr George Wong, and diligently drank his teas daily.

While I was already a healthy eater, I ramped it up by juicing as well as eating sprouts in huge quantities (especially broccoli, watercress, kale and basil), and by consuming fresh herbs every day. Herbs such sage, rosemary, thyme, basil and oregano contain potent anti-cancer compounds and support the production of progesterone (needed to offset estrogen) and ultimately activate the P53 gene, known to cause cell reproduction to cease and cancer cells to die (apoptosis). Unopposed estrogen turns on the BCL2 gene, which is actually what causes cancer cells to grow rapidly and not die. (Vitamin C also boosts the production of progesterone, supporting the P53 gene and thus blocking BCL2).

I also started using Frankincense (Boswellia). At first I was taking this in supplement form, and then in June, began using Sacred Frankincense essential oil in my armpit and on the soles of my feet. What we know about frankincense is that that it boosts the immune system and kills cancer cells—quite effectively. (Research shows that frankincense is extremely effective for brain, breast, colon, pancreatic, ovarian, stomach and likely many other cancers.)

I also targeted cancer stem cells (CSCs). Although I declined chemo and radiation, I know that cancer stem cells are still to be dealt with. Trapped emotions can also stimulate cancer stem cells to regroup, which is yet another reason emotional stress is undoubtedly the  major cause of cancer and it recurrence, and is why I paid heed to addressing them. Cancer stem cells are the only cancer cells that can metastasize (chemo and radiation are not effective on CSCs and actually make them more powerful).  While I was already doing much to target these cells, I added modified citrus pectin, red raspberry seed powder, and ate even more broccoli sprouts–and again, dealt with those trapped emotions of mine (see part I).

I had no intention of taking of taking tamoxifen—there are far better ways to manage estrogen than the use of toxic drugs. Tamoxifen is considered by many to be an anti-estrogen as it binds to estrogen receptor sites on cancer cells thus blocking estrogen from entering, interfering with cell growth and eventually leading to cell death. Soy and flaxseed are also anti-estrogens and can do the very same thing, sans the damage of a toxic drug (and they contain other compounds that have been shown to reduce the growth and spread of cancer cells). Rosemary (extract or from the garden) blocks estrogen production and inactivates excess estrogen by stimulating liver enzymes to better metabolize estrogen.Vitamin D also enters cancer cells and triggers that very same cell death process—and researchers believe vitamin D may be just as powerful as the anti-estrogen drug.

I continued to eat scoops and scoops of freshly ground flaxseed (even more than before) and ate a lot of soy (tofu is fine, but fermented soy such as tempeh is far better). I consumed large amounts of rosemary (and other herbs) several times a day. I upped my intake of vitamin D3, which may in fact have been a big part of my healing as my October lab test came in at 95! And of course, I worked hard to raise my progesterone level as it is vital to balancing estrogen.

While I don’t often advocate avoiding entire food groups, I did give up one thing–gluten.  Dr Schachter strongly encouraged me to give up gluten.  At first I was reluctant, but after more suspicious nodes were found in January, I went cold turkey. Later I was to hear from one of my healers that my body cannot handle gluten. Not all people experience uncomfortable reactions to gluten, but the inflammation within is silently doing its damage.

I juiced like crazy until June, when my herb garden blossomed. I replaced my smoothies and juices with seed crusted ‘pizzas’ loaded with sprouts and copious amounts of fresh herbs. Sometimes we get ‘Food Fatigue’ and we need to change things up so we don’t get bored and quit eating or quit eating healthy.

Here is a recap of some of the things I did to beat cancer (understand that this was in ADDITION to what I was already doing, or in some cases, I just upped the dose from what I was doing–and I take far more supplements than could be listed here).

  • Salvestrols and many other cancer-targeting, immune-boosting supplements such as black cumin seed, graviola, cat’s claw, and medicinal mushrooms
  • Magnesium and vitamin E to boost progesterone and balance hormones
  • IVC and Liposomal C for its cancer killing pro-oxidant and progesterone building efforts
  • Rain Soul, a blend of organic seed oils; anti-inflammatory, immune booster, powerful antioxidant, loaded with essential fatty acids (you can order this via their website)
  • Red raspberry seed powder, black raspberry powder, modified citrus pectin and other supplements that target cancer stem cells: For more natural compounds that target CSC’s, read: Cancer Stem Cells—Could They Be the Key to Metastasis?
  • Daily juicing (leafy greens, carrots, fennel, celery and herbs)
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine (tea) with Dr George Wong
  • Copious amounts of sprouts and microgreens: broccoli, watercress, kale, basil, arugula and added fresh herbs to every meal
  • Plenty of D3!! Vitamin D decreases the expression of cancer causing genes and offers many other amazing anti-cancer actions, including the boosting of progesterone levels
  • Changed my water source, reducing exposure to BPA and tap water toxins (I now use mostly Mountain Valley Spring Water, but if you can install an in-home filter, all the better)
  • Boosted estrogen metabolism with DIM, milk thistle (and other supplements that support the liver, whose job it is to metabolize estrogen—for more information, please visit my Shop page.
  • Boosted progesterone production to offset estrogen (this is huge, and you can do it with food, supplements and stress reduction!)
  • Iodine therapy (and its co-partner Celtic sea salt)
  • Frankincense
  • Consumed large amounts of flaxseed and pumpkin seeds, which lower aromatase and offer multiple benefits

Do I regret my decision for surgery? Absolutely—perhaps I doubted my ability to heal, or perhaps I was just too busy with family issues to think I could manage that healing. It’s been an interesting journey, an educational experience and one that has made me a better and happier person. Nothing happens by chance; perhaps it was all meant to be.

I figured if cancer could happen to me again with all that I had been doing, I must indeed have missed something and that there was more to do. I encourage you to look deeply within for the root cause of your cancer as I did.

I credit my healing to all of the changes I made. I will never know what, out of all what I did, made the difference, but I truly believe that if I had not healed the mind, I would not have healed the body and would surely see more cancer—that my ‘recovery’ would be yet another Bandaid.

But I also believe that aside from my emotional healing, my high vitamin D3 consumption, my addition of frankincense and my huge consumption of flaxseed and progesterone boosting, anti-cancer herbs put me right over the edge of healing.

I don’t have my head in the clouds—I know I must continue to nourish mind, body and soul and again, always, always have a plan B.

Remember, something works for everyone, but everything does not work for everyone….I share with you my story to give you confidence that there are many ways to heal from cancer.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and because I strive to spread the word that there are many options, but no one magic bullet for cancer, I would like to share some books that will empower you to be an active participant in your healing.  No one treatment is right for all, and there are options well beyond what we are hearing from our doctors. There is no ‘best’ diet; it is not a question of trying to follow some ideal way of living based on other people’s experiences or insistence.  Each of us is our own unique person, with our very own DNA, mutations, illnesses and restrictions, therefore each of us must find our own solution—a lifestyle and protocol that works for us. We each had our own path to cancer and therefore need our own path to wellness. While you will find that there are many common factors empowered patients have used to recover from cancer, you will find that the ‘answers’ to cancer vary tremendously. The goal is to find a protocol that gives you confidence that you will beat your cancer, survive and live well.

Breast cancer booksThe following books are loaded with useful information and will aid you in your healing:

Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds, by Dr Kelly Turner, PhD.  This is a much overdue book, one that brings awareness and validity to the true extent of radical remissions—remission achieved without the use of conventional medicine or even after conventional medicine has failed. Turner shows that there really is hope, even in situations that seem hopeless.  You will learn that there are options well beyond the ‘white coat’, and that the possibilities for healing are more abundant than we have been told.    I love that Turner explains that there are a vast variety of paths to wellness. She also lists the 9 commonalities that people have used to heal from their cancer–factors such as diet, stress, emotions, spirituality, and others that profoundly affect our health and well-being.  Listen to Dr Turner on my radio show.

Not surprising, my all-time most popular post is the one I wrote a few years ago on Natural Alternatives to Tamoxifen—and there is a reason for this—people want safer options. Never overlook the power of nature’s medicine chest.  You may also want to view my discussion on natural alternatives with Dr Kelly Turner:

In Waking the Warrior Goddess, Third Edition: Dr. Christine Horner’s Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer, Dr Horner explores the various foods, supplements and health promoting strategies that can help women to successfully treat and prevent breast cancer. This is an excellent resource book that includes the best explanations of phytoestrogens I have ever read.  Dr Horner explains how many natural substances have been proven to be as effective as or even more effective than pharmaceuticals such as aromatase inhibitors.  Listen to Dr Horner on my radio show–Neglected Breast Cancer Discoveries that Could Save Your Life.

The Whole-Food Guide for Breast Cancer Survivors: A Nutritional Approach to Preventing Recurrence , by Helayne Waldman and Edward Bauman, is an excellent guide for anyone seeking to understand the effect of nutritional and environmental factors on our risk for cancer and its recurrence.  In this book you will learn how to incorporate cancer-fighting foods into your diet, clean up your self-care products, nourish your immune system, detoxify your body, and more. After I first heard Helayne speak at a conference, I immediately purchased this book–and it is fantastic. Listen to Helayne on my show: Modulating Hormones with Diet and Supplements.

Breast Cancer Tip: Have you tried rebounding? Rebounding benefits lymphatic circulation by stimulating the millions of one-way valves in the lymphatic system. This benefits the body’s immune capacity for fighting current disease, destroying cancer cells, eliminating antigens and preventing future illness. Rebounding also circulates more oxygen to the tissues (cancer hates oxygen), boosts the production of red blood cells, improves digestion and elimination, aids mental clarity, curtails fatigue and provides a host of other benefits.  Plus, it’s good exercise, fun, and doesn’t have to be expensive–I have this one and it’s only about $60: Sunny Health & Fitness 40″ Foldable Trampoline with Bar.

I honestly do not believe that there is anyone out there who is not aware of breast cancer.  We’ve all been affected in some way—mother, brother, sister, aunt, self—sadly the statistics are now that one in every three women will face breast cancer. Dedicating a month won’t change this much, but I do feel it helps people to bond, and I am sure that helps some to heal.  And while the hype for all these ‘months’ is likely generated to bring in more donations—little of which will go towards bringing us the elusive cure, my hope is that the money gets to the right organizations where it can be effective.
