The Role of Butyrate in Metabolism and Cancer Prevention

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Anticancer diet, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, Breast Cancer, butyrate, Cancer, Cancer Coach, colon cancer, inflammation, Integrative Oncology, ozempic, Uncategorized on March 27, 2025 at 3:19 pm

Ozempic has gained significant popularity as a weight loss aid. However, its side effects are substantial, prompting many to seek alternative solutions. One such natural substance is butyrate, which supports metabolism in a similar manner to Ozempic. The journey begins in the gut, where butyrate plays a pivotal role.

Ozempic falls within the class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications mimic the body’s process of stimulating the pancreas to release insulin and slow down gastric emptying, which helps suppress appetite. GLP-1, a hormone, regulates blood sugar levels and delays stomach emptying, potentially aiding in reduced food intake.

Butyrate, on the other hand, offers a multitude of benefits. It supports the gut lining, combats leaky gut syndrome, aids digestion, and promotes a healthy inflammation response and microbiome. These benefits collectively enhance overall health and, importantly, support metabolism and weight management.

Butyrate and Cancer

Butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid, offers numerous benefits that extend beyond weight management. Its anticancer properties are particularly noteworthy. By demonstrating marked anti-tumor effects, butyric acid plays a significant role in inhibiting the development and growth of cancer cells. Its robust anti-inflammatory properties further contribute to overall health by supporting the integrity of the gut lining, thus repairing and protecting against conditions such as leaky gut.

Additionally, butyric acid is instrumental in improving insulin resistance and managing blood sugar levels, thereby contributing to metabolic health. It aids in the regulation of hunger and satiety, promoting healthy weight. The immune function is also bolstered by butyric acid, making it a vital component in maintaining overall well-being. Furthermore, it facilitates the metabolism of estrogens, adding another layer of health benefits. Embracing natural compounds like butyric acid can be a powerful adjunct in the pursuit of optimal health and cancer prevention.

For a more in-depth exploration of butyrate’s anticancer benefits, please refer to my article: “Fiber and Butyric Acid: What You Need to Know if You Have Cancer (or even if you don’t).”

In conclusion, while Ozempic may offer rapid weight loss, natural alternatives like butyrate provide a holistic approach to health and metabolism without the considerable side effects. It is essential to be informed and aware of all available options before making health decisions.

You can get butyrate in your diet by consuming certain hard cheeses, grass-fed butter or ghee, or take a supplement.

Yours in good health,

Elyn

Salicinium, the Trojan Horse for Cancer Cells

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives Cancer Treatment, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Cell Phones, chemotherapy, EMF Radiation, EMFs and breast cancer, Epstein Barr and Cancer, Salicinium and Cancer, Uncategorized on February 29, 2024 at 3:51 pm

Last week I attended the annual Annie Appleseed conference, an amazing conference to educate people on the benefits of Alternative and Complementary Cancer Treatments. One of the treatments I was eager to learn more about is Salicinium, something many have referred to as the “Trojan horse for cancer cells.” [1]

Among the literature provided at the conference was an article published in the Townsend Letter, the Examiner of Alternative Medicine, “Salicinium Clinical Pearls and Caveats”. I encourage you to read the article in full as it gives valuable information on Salicinium as well as the methods of administration and other important information.

For clarity, Salicinium does not kill malignant cells, it helps the immune system to do this by increasing natural killer (NK) cells. It seems to destroy the enzymatic ‘cloak’ which allows cancer cells to hide from the NK cells. Salicinium can be used as an Integrative therapy to allopathic treatments.

Something else I would like to point out is that according to the author, “due to the metabolic effects on other sick cells that predispose a patient to developing or perpetuating cancer, Salicinium is an effective adjuvant for patients with EBV, HPV, HSV, parasites, fungus, and candida.” This is very important as unbeknownst to many, these often play an integral role in the development and progression of cancer (see my page on EBV (Epstein Barr Virus).

Importantly, according to the article, Salicinium can cross the blood-brain barrier. “One of the mechanisms suggested for the persistence of a high incidence of brain metastases is the failure to cross the blood–brain barrier of most chemotherapeutic agents, including the more recent targeted therapies.”[2] Most pharmaceutical anticancer drugs do not cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB), and many metastatic patients die from brain metastases. The treatment of brain metastases remains a major therapeutic challenge since other standard treatments (surgery, radiation therapy) are also of limited benefit.

“There is increasing discontent on the part of patients and families when faced with these choices. With the instances of cancer being so high in the population, it seems everyone knows several people who have cancer; and many have watched their friends and family suffer and die on traditional regimens. A week does not pass when I interview a new patient who tells me of someone they know who died after the first dose of chemotherapy or was told “your only hope is to receive chemotherapy until you die.’ Thus, many are turning away from the “standard of care’ since they feel it will not produce the result they want and hope for, namely life and vitality beyond cancer. Fear of death is one thing, but patients state that fear of death by torture is unacceptable.”[i]

Many thanks to Virginia Von Schaefer, MD, who shared this information with attendees of the conference. Dr Schaefer has over 30 years of clinical experience in general and trauma surgery, endocrinology, and oncology to create strategies to solve her patients’ complex medical problems. Her background in cell biology and biochemistry at Columbia University in New York City, established a special problem- solving mindset and framework that allows her to integrate “the best of both worlds” of conventional medical and surgical practice, along with an understanding of the fundamental biochemical/scientific basis for all current modalities.

Always remember that you and only you can determine the best treatment for your cancer. Your cancer, your body, your choice of treatment.

This post is not intended to endorse Salicinium, but rather to educate and share that Salicinium is just one more option to consider in one’s cancer protocol. Salicinium is a natural phytochemical and not a chemotherapy. Please read the entire Townsend Letter article for further information.

In your everlasting good health,

Elyn

Should We Block Estrogen After Breast Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives to Anti-Hormone Therapy For Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Tamoxifen, Anticancer diet, aromatase inhibitors, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Healing Cancer Naturally, Natural Alternatives to Aromatase Inhibitors, Tamoxifen, Uncategorized on October 13, 2023 at 8:41 am

Should we or should we not take estrogen blockers if we have or have had breast cancer? Well, the answer is yes and no and perhaps maybe. Whether or not to take hormone blockers such as aromatase inhibitors is a huge decision many women diagnosed with breast cancer face. Lilly and I discussed this on her show, the Lillian McDermott Classroom. If you missed this conversation, you can replay it here: Is Blocking Estrogen After Cancer Good? Below is some additional information on the subject.

Is Estrogen Guilty?

Let’s talk about estrogen and reality. If estrogen really caused breast cancer, we would see far more breast cancer in young premenopausal women than postmenopausal, right?

While many doctors stress to their patients with hormone positive breast cancers that estrogen is fueling their cancer, let’s look at this logically. If our own estrogen was the real or only culprit, why is breast cancer more prevalent in postmenopausal women who certainly have lower estrogen levels then younger premenopausal women? And we would certainly see more breast cancer in pregnant women or those with young children, right? While those rates are rising, it is most likely due to chemical estrogens, not our own, as well as genetic mutations and other powerful drivers such as emotional traumas—but I’ll step away from that topic for now.

Estrogen receptors are on all breast cells, and are stimulated by estrogen, particularly in the absence of progesterone. It is true that when there is breast cancer there’ll be more estrogen receptors. But and this is a big but.

Typically, it is not so much our own estrogen that is sitting on these receptors, but rather the xenoestrogens that are doing the nasty deed. These include chemical estrogens found in self-care, beauty, plastics, paper products, cash register receipts, cleaning products, and the like. If we can eliminate those as best as we can, we severely reduce the toxic load of chemical estrogens that can accelerate cell proliferation. And since we might not be able to avoid everything, it might be helpful to block the receptors (but that doesn’t have to mean tamoxifen, which is considered to be carcinogenic and a form of chemo). Consuming phytoestrogens such as flaxseed, tahini (sesame seeds), and non GMO, organic whole-food soy can help block receptors.

Weight Matters

Postmenopausal women who are overweight, particularly in the belly area, often have increased levels of circulating estrogen. This is because when you are premenopausal most of your estrogen is made by the ovaries, but when you are postmenopausal, a little bit is made by the adrenals and then it is also made in fat cells, including those in the belly and breast. What this means is that a postmenopausal woman who is overweight will have a higher risk of breast cancer than a normal weight postmenopausal woman or premenopausal woman.

To be clear, just because there’s more estrogen doesn’t mean that is the reason we find more cancer in postmenopausal. It may have more to do with the visceral fat that surrounds the abdominal organs which secretes pro-inflammatory chemicals that can spike breast cancer. Cancer loves belly fat.

Should You Take an Aromatase Inhibitor?

When confronted with the decision to take an aromatase inhibitor (AI), one must ask the question does this make sense? We are all told that AIs will extend life, but do they really? Als can damage the heart, brain, bones, eyes — so many things essential to quantity and quality of life. Given that the number one cause of death in women is heart disease, not cancer, it is wise to do one’s research before committing to these drugs.

So, what can we do? lose weight, eat healthy, reduce or eliminate grains if you need to. Eliminate gluten. Eliminate processed foods. Exercise and move your body throughout the day. Take the stairs, park far from your destination. Make many trips up and down your stairs. Garden, walk the dog. If you struggle with your weight then an AI might be right for you, even if it is only for a short time while you make some lifestyle changes. However, there are many natural substances that help both with weight management as well as inhibiting aromatase (see below).

Meanwhile, metabolising estrogen is super important (taking advantage of the benefits and excreting any excess). Raising progesterone appropriately to offset estrogen can also be helpful. And super important is resolving past and present emotional traumas. Suppressed traumas are, in my humble opinion, one of the biggest drivers of cancer, and no estrogen-reducing drug can fix this. Topics for another day.

To read about the potential harms of aromatase inhibitors and what other options you might have, please read Natural Alternatives to Aromatase Inhibitors. There are many alternatives to these toxic drugs.

Just a few cool facts:

  • Button mushrooms are natural aromatase inhibitors.
  • Many supplements are either natural AIs or help to metabolize and detoxify estrogen.
  • High blood levels of vitamin D are linked to reduced estrogen. D also reduces the number of estrogen receptors on breast cancer cells, making the cells less responsive to estrogens’ cancer-promoting signals.
  • Apigenin – found in parsley, celery, and chamomile—is an aromatase inhibitor and is a potent estrogen metabolizing compound. It also inhibits cancer growth and progression.
  • Vitex Fruit (Chaste Tree) may also be helpful to raise progesterone so that it can offset estrogen, particularly in premeno.
  • Leafy greens such as arugula have both anti-cancer and estrogen-blocking properties.
  • Apples contain insoluble fiber that binds to estrogen, preventing it from being absorbed in the body.
  • Coconut protects the liver from excess estrogen and other toxins.
  • Avocados help reduce the absorption of estrogen.
  • Grapes and red wine contain resveratrol and other polyphenols that are known to lower estrogen levels. The quercetin they contain also inhibits cancer growth.
  • Eggs help boost detox pathways and aid in the removal of excess estrogen.
  • Citrus fruits contain phytochemicals that act as antiestrogens and target estrogen receptors, helping to prevent the growth of cancer cells. The d-limonene in them (especially the peels) aids in detoxifying estrogen.
  • Olive oil is high in lutropin, a natural aromatase inhibitor.

Why You Might Want to Think Twice About Radiotherapy for Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Alternatives to Anti-Hormone Therapy For Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer, Alternatives to Tamoxifen, Anticancer diet, Breast Cancer, Cancer Coach, chemotherapy, Integrative Oncology, Natural Aromatase Inhibitors, Radiotherapy for breast cancer, Uncategorized on January 24, 2023 at 2:19 pm

“Elyn, we could do lumpectomy with radiotherapy, but did you know that radiation can result in more cancer?” These were the words the first surgeon I went to see uttered during my consult (February 2007). Stunned, I told him I would not do it. He then explained that lumpectomy wasn’t really an option considering how much cancer was in my left breast and therefore made no sense to do lumpectomy and harmful radiation. But his words of warning will never be forgotten. I chose mastectomy, but with a different surgeon who also said mastectomy was the best choice (I just felt more comfortable with him and his associated hospital).

The question one needs to ponder is why would any doctor push a cancer-promoting therapy on a person with cancer?  We all know that radiation is linked to cancer, and we all know that potentially and intentionally inflicting up to 3rd degree burns cannot be a good thing! (Read on to understand more on the harms and limitations of radiotherapy as well as chemotherapy.)

When I was diagnosed again in 2014 for stage 3 lymph node involvement, this time I was offered radiation and chemo. I declined both. My oncologist was relieved that I was declining the radiation. He suggested the chemo and when I declined, he offered low-dose chemo. I declined that too, which he was fine with. He had done his job of recommending the standard of care and backed it up with a letter to my surgeon stating I flat out refused. I embarked on a holistic protocol, which he fully supported.

So Why do Docs Recommend Radiation?

What you need to know too is that doctors and other medical professionals can lose their license to practice medicine if they fail to recommend anything other than the standard of care, meaning conventional cancer therapies such as chemo and radiation. These therapies are also part of their very limited toolbox as holistic therapies are typically not taught in medical school.

Sadly, radiation therapy is a huge profession (same for other cancer treatments), one that enthusiastic young medical students flock to. It’s what they are then trained to do and fall under the belief that they are doing good.

True, it is believed that radiotherapy that has the potential to reduce the risk of recurrence in the local area (not always but sometimes). However, no one dies of a local breast tumor, for example. And radiotherapy does nothing for the cancer stem cells, the only cancer cells that can metastasize (“mets”) to other areas such as the lungs, brain, and bones. Metastasis essentially shuts down essential organs and body systems (such as digestion, bones, lungs, liver, brain, etc.), resulting in death.[i] (Of course, the ‘treatment’ for mets is often chemotherapy, which also doesn’t target stem cells and is highly toxic to essential organs, again often resulting in death, particularly when given repeatedly).

But what these professionals do not tell you is that “Cancer stem cells (CSCs) comprise the subpopulation of tumor bulk and acquire resistant to conventional therapies and are considered as the primary tumor initiator cells. Nowadays, the tumor heterogeneity originated from CSCs, and its progenitors are accepted as a mortifying drawback in front of the cancer therapies.”[ii] Let that sink in. In layman terms, it means that CSCs are the reason that conventional treatments fail and encourage progression of the disease.

To learn more about cancer stem cells and what you can do about them, please read Cancer Stem Cells and Progression of Disease: What You Need to Know Now. In the article is a link to a second article and to a podcast of mine.

Other Risks of Radiotherapy:

  • Radiation increases the risk of skin cancer in the treatment area.
  • Radiation to lymph nodes can cause damage to lymph nodes and lead to lymphedema.
  • Radiation treatment to the chest can affect the heart. You may be at a higher risk of cardiac (heart) issues if your breast cancer was in the left breast. Speak to your radiologist for breathing techniques that mitigate this risk.
  • Radiation can cause small cracks (fractures) in the bones that are in the treatment field.
  • Radiation to the chest or underarm area can experience damage to the brachial plexus nerve.
  • Radiation injury to the nerves and muscles is called radiation-induced neuropathy or radiation fibrosis. It tends to develop in the years following treatment and slowly worsens over time [i]

If you are considering radiation (or chemo), I strongly suggest you do your research first. And always work with an integrative professional or coach if you do choose these treatments. If you have had radiotherapy or chemo, I strongly suggest you move on and embrace the fact that you made the best choice you could at the time and meanwhile work on targeting the stem cells as well as the reasons for the original cancer.

Broccoli and Watercress Sprouts Fight Cancer

In Alternative Cancer Therapies, Anticancer diet, Anticancer foods, foods for colon cancer, foods for breast cancer, antioxidants, Breast Cancer, Cancer, Cancer Coach, Uncategorized on February 27, 2017 at 9:43 am

[Editor’s note] This post was originally published in February 2017. It has been updated and republished in March 2019

It is well known that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and watercress contain powerful anticancer compounds. But did you know that eating their respective sprouts can supercharge the health benefits? Sprouts are high in vitamins C, A, and phytonutrients that support the immune system.

In sprout form these little three to four day old plants contain almost 100 times the level of cancer-fighting sulforaphane than the mature plants. The phytonutrients in these sprouts up-regulate antioxidant enzymes and detoxification processes which clear toxic compounds from the body. And, that is just the beginning—read on to find out how sprouts knock the socks off cancer.

 What’s in a Sprout

Isothiocyanates (ITCs), such as sulforaphane, are sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables. They support matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity which reduces the breakdown of connective tissue within a cell that impede the expansion of existing tumors. Matrix MMP-9 plays important roles in tumor invasion and angiogenesis. Secretion of MMP-9 has been reported in various cancer types including lung, colon, and breast cancer.

ITCs also kill off cancer cells, including cancer stem cells, which is essential for combating cancer metastases. Isothiocyanates restrain certain pro-inflammatory compounds that are associated with chronic inflammation and cancer.

The ITC sulforaphane helps support the anti-inflammatory Nrf2 pathway which protects cells against oxidative and free radical activity. It supports the detoxification process by inducing Phase 2 detoxification enzymes, inhibiting the activation of pro-carcinogens, and  by boosting cellular glutathione levels.  Sulforaphane promotes cancer cell death and inhibits cancer cell proliferation. It also supports the immune system and in particular, increases Natural Killer Cell activity.

Sulforaphane also inhibits Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium that increases one’s risk of stomach and colorectal cancer.  It is also anti-viral and has been found effective against the Epstein Barr Virus and may be helpful against Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Quercetin, another potent antioxidant highly concentrated in sprouts, is a strong anti-inflammatory and prevents tumor cell growth.  It also aids in the removal of excess estrogen from the body — it stimulates liver function to detoxify estrogen and other carcinogenic agents.

Lutein is another powerful antioxidant that neutralizes cancer-causing free radicals (it is also essential for many things, including eye health, protecting against macular degeneration, and for maintaining strong eye tissue). Lutein (and zeaxanthin) may be beneficial to cardio health by preventing hardening of the arteries.

Glutathione has been labeled the ‘mother of all antioxidants” due to its incredible ability to disarm free radicals, detoxify the body, and boost the immune system.

Broccoli Sprouts

broccoli-sproutsBroccoli sprouts are extremely high in cancer fighting activity, particularly against lung, colon, and breast cancers. Compounds in broccoli speed up the removal of estrogen from the body, helping to suppress breast cancer. They also target cancer stem cells, the cells responsible for metastasis.

Broccoli sprouts contain a high amount of the cancer-busting and immune boosting substance sulforaphane. They are also abundant in quercetin, glutathione, beta carotene, indoles, vitamin C, lutein, glucarate, and the metabolic substance DIM, which is a natural aromatase inhibitor.

Broccoli sprouts are rich in cholesterol reducing fiber and have anti-viral and anti-ulcer activity. They are also a super source of chromium that helps regulate insulin and blood sugar.

Watercress Sproutswatercress-sprouts

Sometimes called peppergrass, watercress is delicious and pungent. It is also one of the most nutrient-dense foods known. It is rich in beta-carotene and other carotenoids, including lutein. Watercress also offers significant quercetin, EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), flavanols such a kaempferol, lycopene, idole-3 carbinol (13C), sulforaphane, as well as DIM. It is a good source of riboflavin, vitamin C, A and K, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, and contains trace amounts of omega 3’s. Watercress is one of the best food sources of iodine for vegans.

Watercress also contains a high amount of PEITC (phenylethylisothiocyanate) which has been shown to protect DNA from damage. PEITC reduces the growth of breast cancer cells, triggers apoptosis (cancer cell death), and decreases angiogenesis. It inhibits the growth of HER2 expression as well as cancer metastasis.

PEITC (also found in some other cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli) deactivates mutant p53 in tumor cells but leaves normal p53 alone. P53 regulates cell division by keeping cells from growing and dividing too fast or in an uncontrolled way. A mutation in p53 is a permanent change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA. Loss of p53 function can be deleterious, and about 50% of all human cancers have a mutated p53 gene.

Watercress has antioxidant, antigenotoxic (the process by which chemical agents damage genetic information within a cell causing mutations), and anti-inflammatory properties.

Studies show that a regular intake of watercress has been associated with protection against breast, colon, and other cancers.

Watercress and broccoli affect all stages of cancer: initiation, proliferation, and metastasis. So, what’s not to love about these sprouts? Plus, it is a lot easier to consume a handful of sprouts than it is to down a pound and a half of broccoli or an enormous plate of watercress– which, for example,  is the amount it would take to get an equivalent amount of sulforaphane.

Add sprouts to your smoothies; use on sandwiches, on top of pizza, in salads, and as a garnish for soups. I make wonderful gluten-free pizza crusts using cauliflower or garbanzo bean flour, and pile the pizza high with arugula and sprouts just before serving.  Yum!

Just a reminder that while  eating cruciferous vegetables is a important for optimal health, and may support you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Choose to consume cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, radish, and kale). It is necessary to have sufficient iodine in the diet when consuming high quantities  (including DIM).

Can’t find sprouts locally or worried about others handling your raw vegetables?  Grow your own. You can grow your own sprouts and now it is easier than ever (no changing the water several times a day, just add water to the tray day one and done. Here is my first tray of Hamama salad green sprouts.. Next up are broccoli sprouts.  Order your own Hamama sprout kit.

Healing Paths for Cancer

In Uncategorized on June 13, 2014 at 3:53 pm

We refer to cancer as a disease, yet it is really a symptom.  The development of cancer is the result of  imbalances, excesses and deficiencies that deplete and overwhelm our immune system and allow cancer to form.  We may be estrogen dominant or otherwise hormonally imbalanced, we may have a heavy accumulation of toxins within the body or too much chronic emotional stress, and perhaps we don’t get enough nutrients to protect us.  Perhaps we are lacking emotional attachment and love. There are many theories on what causes cancer, but the reality is each cancer has its own origin.  The trick to ridding oneself of cancer is to uncover the root cause of our own individual cancer, and to address it, not put a band-aid on it.  Hence, because there are many triggers for cancer, there are also many paths for healing.

pathwaysFood as Medicine

Even with the best medical care, we cannot ignore that which creates the symptom of cancer.  While the current standard of care offers surgery, chemo and radiation, these treatments are not curative on their own—one must still change the cancer environment (and these “treatments” also encourage more cancer); we must fix what is broken.   We also must do everything possible to boost the efficacy and mitigate the damages of conventional treatments or explore other options.  How do we do this?  We make dietary changes that boost immunity and cut off the pathways of cancer,we  reduce and manage stress, get proper sleep and manage estrogen—in other words, we take control of our health.  And again, we explore all options. I highly recommend consulting with an integrative oncologist, a naturopathic doctor who specializes in cancer or a cancer coach.  https://elynjacobs.wordpress.com/integrative-oncologists-and-naturopathic-doctors/

If we decline conventional treatment or follow up pharmaceutical therapies, we still need a comprehensive plan to heal our body so we can heal our cancer. In the alternative world, there are many protocols, many theories.  Again, it comes down to knowing the options and finding the best path for you and your cancer.  For more information and resources on alternative and complementary care, please visit https://elynjacobs.wordpress.com/alternative-and-complementary-therapies/ as well as the recommended reading list below.

And while each cancer is unique in many ways, and many paths to take, there are some common factors involved in the healing of cancer—even cancers considered terminal.   An excellent book I recommend on paths to healing is Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Oddsby Dr Kelly Turner, PhD. Turner has done extensive research on radical remission and has uncovered the nine key factors that can make a difference, the subtitle of her book.  If you haven’t heard Dr. Turner talk about her research and book, you may want to replay my conversation with her on Survive and Live Well.  You can replay it free here.

Regardless of the path one chooses, the biggest mistake anyone can make is not asking the right questions and not knowing all the options.  Tune in weekly to the Survive and Live Well Radio Show, visit my website for the replays and for resources, and read as much as you can; become an educated patient.   And remember, there is always hope.

Searching for Answers for Cancer Patients—the Wrap Up

In Uncategorized on April 7, 2014 at 11:34 am

Searching for Answers for Cancer Patients has been a wonderful series on my radio show, Survive and Live Well, created to empower cancer patients to take control of their health, navigate treatment choices, enhance and improve the efficacy of treatment and to boost quality of life.

In Part I, Dr Schachter presented a critical analysis of current conventional cancer standard of care practices and opened our eyes to explore all options. In Part II, Dr Schachter discussed his concerns about integrative oncology and its tendency to accept conventional treatment as a given, critiqued various diets for cancer patients, and shared what he believes to be important areas for the cancer clinician and the cancer patient to consider as part of a total program including the incorporation of vitamins D, K2 (MK4), A and iodine into the treatment program.

In Part III Dr Schachter and I discussed ways of improving the results of conventional cancer treatment–specifically the various tests which help clinicians determine which therapies might be most helpful for a particular patient, as examined in Ralph Moss’ book Customized Cancer Treatment.  We also critiqued Brian Schaefer’s Salvestrols: Journeys to Wellness.

Michael Schachter and ElynWe kicked off Tuesday’s conversation (Part IV) with a huge appreciation for Ann Fonfa and another amazing conference. If you have not yet been to one of the Annie Appleseed Project conferences, you might want to consider going–excellent speakers, content and delicious organic meals.

We then discussed Vitamin D at length, delving into the extensive list of health problems that can be managed or resolved with the judicious use of Vitamin D, especially when used along with other fat-soluble vitamins such as K2 and Vitamin A.

Here are some conditions that may be helped with vitamin D:

–     Osteoporotic fractures

–     Falls

–     Hypertension

–     Cancer

–     Adjuvant TBC therapy

–     Respiratory infection/influenza risk

–     Pregnancy outcomes

–     Periodontal disease

–     Insulin sensitivity & diabetes

There is supportive medical literature in peer-reviewed journals for each of them and several have more than one study. For all of these conditions, there is evidence for a causal connection between serum 25 (OH) D levels and the various health benefits, as shown by a number of randomized double-blind placebo controlled studies.  For cancer, we have only one successful randomized control study showing that an extra 1,100 IU of vitamin D given daily to a group of older women for 4 years reduced the cancer rate in those women by about 70%. This study was published in 2007. Dr. Schachter believes that more studies like this haven’t been done because vitamin D is a natural substance that can’t be patented. As a result, there is little economic motivation to carry out these expensive clinical trials.

I questioned Dr Schachter as to why vitamin D can be helpful for so many conditions. It turns out that the hormone derivative from vitamin D (1,25 Hydroxy D) is formed in cells all over the body and functions as a type of password for other stimuli to up-regulate or down-regulate the expression of various genes.

What most of us learned in high school biology, college and medical school was that vitamin D (also called cholecalciferol) was formed in the skin from cholesterol in the presence of ultra violet B rays from the sun (also from tanning machines) or from a small number of foods like certain fish. This cholecalciferol then migrates to the liver where a hydroxyl group (-OH) is added to form 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D.  The 25 Hydroxy D circulates in the bloodstream. The level of this substance in the bloodstream is the best available measure for the vitamin D status of the body.  Everyone agrees that this is what happens in the body.

The NEXT IMPORTANT STEP IS WHAT IS NEW. The old teaching was that 25 Hydroxy D circulates in the bloodstream until it reaches the kidneys. Then another hydroxyl (OH) group is added to form 1,25 Dihydroxy D which is the active hormonal derivative of vitamin D. According to this old teaching, this derivative form of vitamin D then leaves the kidney, enters the bloodstream and travels to various organs, enters them goes into the cell and the nucleus of the cell to activate various important enzymes.

RECENT INFORMATION INDICATES THAT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY WAY THAT 1,25 DIHYDROXY D IS FORMED IN THE BODY.  IT TURNS OUT THAT EVERY CELL IN THE BODY IS CAPABLE OF MAKING 1,25 HYDROXY D FROM 25 HYDROXY D. So, when an organ or a cell needs 1,25 Hydroxy D, it obtains  25 hydroxy D from the bloodstream and within the cell, converts the 25 Hydroxy D to 1,25 Dihydroxy D. In order for this to occur optimally, there needs to be relatively high concentrations of 25 Hydroxy D circulating in the bloodstream. Thus, every cell in any organ is capable of making this active form of 1,25 Hydroxy D if sufficient 25 Hydroxy D is present. THIS IS HOW THE 25 HYDROXY D AFFECTS THE FUNCTIONING OF EVERY CELL (ORGAN) IN THE BODY. It is important also to realize that every time this 25 Hydroxy D acts, it is destroyed where it has its effect within the cell.  So, it is important to keep the 25 Hydroxy D level optimal, so that it is constantly available to do its job.

Both the optimal serum level of 25 Hydroxy D and the dosage of vitamin D as a supplement are extremely controversial at this time. The position of the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is that everything is fine if the 25 Hydroxy D level is 20 nG/dl and certainly great if it is 30 nG/ml. The vitamin D council presents lots of evidence to indicate that above 40 is optimal for many functions AND A FEW RENEGADES LIKE DR SCHACHTER THINK THAT BETWEEN 60 AND 100 IS OPTIMAL, ESPECIALLY FOR SERIOUS CONDITIONS LIKE CANCER. One of the best lectures he has seen and highly recommends about vitamin D was done by Robert P Heaney MD. It can be seen at the website: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Za2H5oTXJY.  In this lecture Dr Heaney gives a great explanation of how vitamin D can be helpful for so many conditions.

Regarding the importance of vitamin A and how it works together with vitamin D, Dr Schachter explained  how vitamin D combines with D receptor, vitamin A combines with vitamin A receptor (RXR) and these two components  combine together to enter the nucleus of the cell to affect the up and down regulation of genes. This generally results in an up-regulation of anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer genes and a down-regulation of pro-inflammatory and pro-cancer genes.

Dr Schachter also  suggested to us  that it is critical  to have sufficient Vitamin K2 in order to ensure that calcium is bound and held in  bones and at the same time is removed from our arteries, joints or other tissues where it doesn’t belong. Vitamin K2 also inhibits cancer cell lines, such as colon, breast, leukemia, brain and many more. Dr. Schachter discussed the two forms of vitamin K2 that are available in supplements (Menaquinone 4 or MK4 and Menaquinone 7 or MK7). Although most supplement companies are using MK7, Dr. Schachter prefers to use MK4 for a variety of reasons, one of the most important of which is that only MK4 has been involved with successful randomized double-blind placebo controlled trials.

We also spoke about the inverse relationship of vitamin D intake and various cancers, including melanoma—great motivation to get some sunshine (or take the supps).  We tackled the argument by dermatologists that our lives depend on the liberal use of sunscreen.  Dr Schachter debunked that myth—just please remember that while sunscreen usually contains toxic ingredients and blocks the absorption of vitamin D, sunburn is not the goal.  Stick with an anti-inflammatory diet (natural sunscreen) and enjoy some sun—just don’t overdo it.

If you would like more information regarding Vitamin D, there are several books and websites that Dr Schachter recommends, though all of them have some limitations. One could start with books by Michael Holick MD, PhD: The UV Advantage and The Vitamin D Solution. He also likes the book Vitamin D3 and Solar Power for Optimal Health by Marc Sorenson Ed.D.A great deal of information can be obtained from the Vitamin D Council website, though they charge $5 a month to keep up with their latest information.  You may also want to replay Parts I, II, III and IV of this series.

We wrapped up the conversation with kudos to Peter Gotzche for his brave work and incredible book Deadly Medicines and Organised Crime: How Big Pharma Has Corrupted Healthcare, as well as Dr Kelly Turner’s extensive research on the radical remission of cancer and her book Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds.  Both of these books will give you powerful insight on taking control of your health and finding the best path to wellness.  You will gain valuable insight into the dangers of operating out of fear when you intuition tells you the treatment may be far worse than the disease. Dr Turner was on Survive and Live Well on April 1, 2014, and Dr Gotzche will be on the show in May.
