Could Aromatase Inhibitors Actually Increase One’s Risk for Breast Cancer?

Most oncologists recommend estrogen blockers or aromatase inhibitors for those with hormone-sensitive cancers. However, new research shows that decreased estrogen levels can promote insulin resistance, which may actually increase the risk of cancer of the breast, endometrium, and ovaries. 

To recap from my previous post, What You Need to Know About Sugar and Breast Cancer, insulin resistance leads to increased insulin in the body. High insulin triggers breast cancer cells to divide and grow.

After menopause many women face a dramatic increase in insulin resistance (and start noticing belly fat that wasn’t there before). Declining estrogen is considered to be the reason.[i] If decreased estrogen promotes insulin resistance, could intentionally reducing estrogen increase one’s risk of breast cancer? Can aromatase inhibitors actually promote breast cancer? Research shows they just might.

Decreased Estrogen Levels Promote Insulin Resistance

Studies (both clinical and animal) have shown a strong correlation between circulating estrogen deficiency and insulin resistance. At Texas A&M, a team lead by Dr. Shaodong Guo identified that decreased serum estrogen levels promote insulin resistance and that even a slight decrease in circulatory estrogen levels is associated with resistance and may increase the risk of cancer of the breast, endometrium, and ovaries. The researchers found that “for premenopausal women, even a slight decrease in their circulatory estrogen levels associated with insulin resistance may increase the risk for cancers, particularly in the organs having high estrogen demand (breast, endometrium and ovary). On the other hand, postmenopausal state with profound estrogen deficiency confers high risk for cancers in different organs with either high or moderate estrogen demand.”[ii]

According to the Guo, the lead investigator for the Texas A&M study, estrogen deficiency or impaired estrogen signaling is associated with insulin resistance. “Studies have shown the reduction of estrogen in postmenopausal women accelerates the development of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.” He further explains that estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women can reduce insulin resistance. “Clinical trials of estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women have demonstrated a lowered insulin resistance as well as reductions in plasma glucose levels.”

2015 research published in the Journal or Diabetes Research also concluded that the loss of circulating estrogen E2 and impairment of its cellular activity can lead to an abrupt reduction in metabolic rate and that E2 replacement is preventive. “It is very clear that E2 has tremendous potential as a therapeutic against diabetes and its associated complications, but it has to be administered in a safer form and personalized to individual needs”. [iii]  While the link between synthetic HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and breast cancer has been established and therefore may not be an option, it  just doesn’t make sense to intentionally lower our own already-declining natural estrogen.

Many women choose bio-identical hormones, but to be clear, bios are not ‘natural’, they are chemically constructed in a lab. According to Dr Mache Seibel, M.D., author of The Estrogen Window, you have to be careful with compounded bio-identicals. He says that studies show that despite the fact that the prescription may be filled correctly, typically progesterone tends to be 60-80% lower than ordered and estrogen 80-200% higher than ordered which can result in increased estrogen dominance and could raise your risk of hormone-driven cancer. He also points out the serious risks of declining estrogen, which include increasing your risk of heart disease by 30% and dementia 70%. 

Why You Need Estrogen 

We need estrogen for aiding in the prevention of heart disease and for strong, healthy bones. In fact, estrogen is essential to the health of all parts of your body, from your eyes to your heart to your brain to everywhere else.  Estrogen also improves body fat distribution and B-cell function, and reduces inflammation. And of course, estrogen increases insulin sensitivity (and thus is protective against diabetes and metabolic syndrome predisposing one to obesity) and conversely, low estrogen levels can lead to increased insulin resistance or impaired insulin activity.

Given that studies show that the reduction of estrogen in postmenopausal women accelerates the development of insulin resistance and thus could promote breast cancer, it is hard to believe that aromatase inhibitors are always a good idea. Perhaps ‘prescribing’ phytoestrogens such as flax and sesame seeds, herbs, and even perhaps whole soy, would be a better tactic. Phytoestrogens are plant-based weak estrogens which bind to estrogen receptors in the body (just like tamoxifen) and through competitive inhibition, can prevent the receptor-binding of more potent estrogens (including xenoestrogen such as BPA). Phytoestrogens also promote hormone balance and homeostasis. One can also take steps to raise progesterone to balance natural estrogens by taking supplements such as zinc and vitamin E, lowering stress, and using an over-the-counter progesterone cream. I will further address the role of phytoestrogens and hormone-driven cancers in my next post.

Natural Aromatase Inhibitors

Some natural substances and formulas that reduce aromatase activity (should you need to reduce aromatase activity or improve estrogen metabolism or hormone balance) include Calcium d Glucarate, which helps clear excess estrogen and chemical estrogens from the body, and a product known as Aromastat, which contains a blend of herbal ingredients that work together to help keep your natural hormones balanced.  Aromastat contains chamomile (apigenin), chrystin, daidzein, genistein, indole-3-carbinol, and glycitein (it does contain soy isolates, so if avoiding, look for these ingredients individually, although in the case of genistein, I prefer you eat organic whole soy). What You Need to Know About Sugar and Breast Cancer—It’s NOT What You Think!

Cancer loves sugar, we all know that – sugar feeds cancer and suppresses the immune system. The effects of each dose can last for 5-6 hours. The more sugar we eat, the faster cancer cells can grow. But do you know why sugar happens to love breast cancer?

Cells require sugar for energy, but it needs help to get into the cells. Insulin is the helper that attaches to and signals cells to absorb sugar from the bloodstream. Food sources that boost insulin production and regulate blood sugar levels include red cabbage, sweet potatoes, fenugreek seeds, curcumin, blueberries, vitamin D, and Ceylon cinnamon (so please continue to eat them). However, consuming sugar (sweets, pasta, and many bread, including whole wheat) raises blood sugar levels quickly. The pancreas responds to this by pumping out insulin to lower blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to decreased insulin sensitivity. When this happens, the body begins to ignore the signal to take glucose out of the bloodstream and put it into our cells. This triggers the body to start producing even more insulin. The more insulin, the more circulating estrogen there is to stimulate breast cancer cells.

     Sugar spikes insulin levels. Insulin regulates how much estrogen is available to stimulate breast cells. The more sugar you consume, the higher your circulating estrogen levels.

In the Fall 2019 issue of Breast Cancer Wellness there is an excellent article on sugar and its connection to estrogen, written by Dr Christine Horner, M.D. According to Horner, sugar “attacks a portion of the estrogen cycle, making more estrogen available to attach to the estrogen receptors in breast tissue. Insulin regulates how much of the estrogen in your blood is available to attach to estrogen receptors in your breast tissue. When estrogen travels in the blood, it either travels alone seeking a mate (an estrogen receptor), or it travels with a partner (a protein binder) that prevents it from attaching to an estrogen receptor. Insulin regulates the number of protein binders in the blood. So, the higher your insulin levels are, the fewer the number of protein binders there will be and therefore the more free estrogen that will be available to attach to estrogen receptors.  In other words, when your insulin levels are up, free-estrogen levels are up too. And both of them speed up cell division. That’s why high insulin levels increase your risk of breast cancer so much.” She further explains that “when insulin attaches to its receptor, it has the same effect as when estrogen attaches to its receptor; it causes cells to start dividing. The higher your insulin levels are, the faster your breast cells will divide; the faster they divide, the higher your risk of breast cancer is and the faster any existing cancer cells will grow.”

Addressing Estrogen Receptors with SERMS

To address estrogen receptor positive cancers, oncologists often recommend SERMS (selective receptor modulators) such as tamoxifen. However, tamoxifen is a carcinogenic drug that comes with significant side effects, including an increased risk of cancer.

Research shows that phytoestrogens,  plant-derived estrogens that can actually cause anti-estrogenic effects by binding to estrogen receptors (much like tamoxifen), might be worthy of consideration. The potential effects of dietary phytoestrogens have been studied to lower the risk of menopausal symptoms, cardiovascular disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, brain function disorders, and cancers of the breast, ovaries, endometrium, prostate, and other cancers

I will address the role of phytoestrogens as holistic selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS vs Tamoxifen) in a subsequent post.  I will also address the question of ‘do aromatase inhibitors actually increase your risk of breast or other cancers?’. So, You Think MRIs are Safe? Think Again

MRIs, considered to be safer than CT scans that use powerful damaging x-rays (which is likely true), are not as safe as you think. MRIs use strong magnetic fields and some radio-frequency pulses to produce detailed images of structures in the body. While MRIs do not use ionizing radiation such as one receives from x-rays, they are far from harmless, especially when contrast agents are used.

Gadolinium, a para-magnetic toxic heavy metal ion, is often used in the contrast agent that enhances the quality of MRI scans. It was originally thought that gadolinium would chemically bond with non-metal ions when used during MRIs which would allow it to be eliminated from your body before it is released into tissues. However, recent research shows that gadolinium may not be immediately eliminated and may instead persist in your body.[i]  It is unknown at this time what the heightened risks may be, but repeated exposure to gadolinium could cause hyper-intensity in the brain which is linked to multiple sclerosis, liver dysfunction, and other adverse reactions.

Gadolinium has caused problems with cognition, vision, candida overgrowth, bone pain, skin and subcutaneous burning pain, brain fog problems, ringing of the ears, impaired liver function, and discoloration of the skin. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with impaired renal (kidney) function has also been reported. Women who have had MRIs to the breast report breast pain, brain pain, pain behind the eyeballs, deep pain in the bones, dizziness, itching, difficulty swallowing, muscle issues, and weakness in limbs. Some researchers believe that gadolinium poisoning is even worse than lead poisoning.

For some, it takes only one MRI with gadolinium to feel the side effects. For others, it is dose-dependent with the accumulation of toxins which interfere with the body’s normal functioning, including the ability to excrete those toxins.

Gadolinium in the News

Patients are taking notice, thanks to people such as actor Chuck Norris, whose wife Gena developed gadolinium issues after a series of MRIs. Gena reported a burning pain throughout her body, violent shaking, numbness, weakness, kidney damage and trouble breathing. Gena filed a $10 million lawsuit against the manufactures and distributors of gadolinium. Sharon Williams, one of the founders of The Lighthouse Project, developed a rash on her lower legs, high blood pressure, and severe pain in her brain after a series of MRIs (some given just to investigate her growing list of symptoms!).

Detoxing from Gadolinium

Chelation therapies such as EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) are one option to remove gadolinium from the body. EDTA is best done under the supervision of a doctor as the chelating agent can also remove important nutrients such as calcium and zinc from the body. Another option is to use herbs such as cilantro, garlic, chlorella, and supplements such as Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC). Saunas and Epsom salt baths as well as drinking plenty of water can also be helpful.

While there is certainly a time and place for MRIs, change is needed. Safer contrast agents are necessary. Doctors and patients should weigh the risks and patients need to be informed of the serious risks before a decision is made to order an MRI scan that uses a gadolinium contrast agent.

While the dangers of MRIs are not ‘new news’, I have worked with many clients who were unaware of the dangers of them (as well as CTs, bone scans, mamos, etc.), so I thought it important to post this message. Please consider less invasive scanning whenever possible (sonograms, cancer marker tests, Circulating Tumor Count tests, and the like).

What You Need to Know About High TSH Levels and Iodine

It is often believed that iodine shuts down the thyroid and that elevated TSH levels are unequivocally indicative of hypothyroidism.  However, as with many things, there are two sides to every story, and many untruths to be told and righted. If you are supplementing with iodine and have been told your TSH is elevated, here is what you need to know.

Iodine was used for over a hundred years to treat a huge list of conditions. Importantly, iodine is essential for the optional functioning of all of the cells in the body, and can actually improve thyroid function as well as immune function. Studies also show that it promotes cancer cell death, suppresses tumor growth, and performs other chemo-therapeutic activities.[i] As Lynne Farrow, author of The Iodine Crisis, so aptly states, “it couldn’t suddenly stop working, so what turned the world against iodine?”

The claim that iodine shuts down the thyroid is clearly one of those cases where the ‘they must know what they’re doing’ mindset results not only in unfortunate medical advice, but spreading ‘untruths’. According to Farrow, the idea that iodine shuts down the thyroid gland ‘was neither fundamental nor a law’ but was accepted as so. Farrow speaks of an article written in 2005 by Guy Abraham, M.D., The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect: Crying Wolff, that answers the million-dollar question of ‘who stole the iodine?’ In the article Abraham identifies an influential paper published in 1948 by Wolff and Chaikoff ” which persuaded physicians that iodine was dangerous and would stop the thyroids of iodine-takers from working.” (Farrow pg 150). This theory was mistakenly enforced as a ‘fundamental law of physiology’ and thus actively practiced. 

The problem, according to Farrow, was that no one ever fact-checked or replicated the study, yet its warning to avoid iodine supplementation was incorporated into medical practice. According to Abraham, the authors made a mistake in their rat study. Apparently, they never checked the rats’ thyroid levels and actually did not observe thyroid enlargement or disease from high doses of iodine. Further, it seems the mistake was repeated by Wolff in 1969 when another paper extrapolated the findings to a human study.

The influence of Wolff-Chaikoff conclusions were so wide, the phenomenon was institutionalized by calling the fear-mongering event, “The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect.” Medical textbooks perpetuated this mistake and it was taught it to at least three generations of doctors. According to Farrow, it was all an assumption from an influence-leader with credentials from UC Berkeley and the NIH, therefore ‘they must know what they are doing.’

On the contrary, through the works of Guy Abraham, M.D., Jorge Flecha, M.D.,  David Brownstein, M.D., Lynne Farrow, and others, we now know that iodine is indeed essential for the thyroid and that a deficiency can lead to cysts, nodules, fibrocystic breast disease, cancer, and more (for more information on their work, see the suggested reading at the bottom of this post).

TSH and Iodine

One of the leading pioneers in iodine research and application, Dr Jorge Flechas, M.D., explains in his paper Orthoiodosupplementation in a Primary Care Practice,  how TSH levels may appear abnormal during iodine supplementation, but those anomalies are unlikely to reflect hypothyroidism. He essentially debunks the notion that iodine shuts down the thyroid gland and believes that iodine deficiency can result in the manifestation of hypothyroidism.

Flechas explains that most of the time iodine supplementation lowers TSH and T4 levels and free T3 stays steady. However, he says TSH sometimes goes up, while T4 and T3 may remain stable, rise, or decline. Importantly, this does not necessarily mean that a person has or is developing hypothyroidism. According to Flechas, it can be that the brain is directing the body to make more sodium iodide symporters (NIS). The NIS are channels in the cell membrane that transport sodium iodide into the cells. Iodide (iodine) is an essential nutrient that is absorbed by all cell lines, but particularly in the thyroid. TSH (along with prolactin and oxytocin) has been found to stimulate the making of NIS. Flechas further explains that elevated TSH might not be a bad thing as it has many actions outside the thyroid that have been discovered.

Flechas does make it is very clear that nutritional status and overall thyroid health must be evaluated prior to high-dose iodine supplementation. Ideally, all patients should have an iodine loading test prior to high dose supplementation.

Farrow, through her work with the Breast Cancer Choices Iodine Investigation Project reports that a supplement called ATP CoFactors helps speed iodine absorption and normalize TSH levels.  ATP CoFactors is a supplement with a cooperative combination of vitamins and minerals that support the synthesis of ATP for ADP to better promote energy production.

If you have elevated TSH but no other indications or symptoms of being hypothyroid, I suggest you work with an iodine-literate doctor before you take a drug that can actually increase your risk of breast cancer*.  Iodine deficiency is often the cause of Hashimoto’s, especially in the presence of selenium deficiency (Farrow, p.51) so again, seek out an iodine-literate doctor to see if iodine might be right for you. Note: those on a high-dose iodine protocol may need companion supplementation of magnesium, selenium, vitamin c, riboflavin, niacin, and unrefined salt, so please discuss this with your physician.

The Anti-Cancer Benefits of Horseradish

Horseradish, a member of the cruciferous family, contains numerous anti-cancer compounds. The phytonutrients in horseradish up-regulate antioxidant enzymes and detoxification processes which clear toxic compounds from the body, inhibit the growth and spread of cancer, target cancer stem cells, and lower cancer-promoting inflammation.

Cancer Fighting Abilities of Horseradish

Horseradish is rich in isothiocyanates (ITCs), compounds well known to protect against cancer and target its pathways. ITCs restrain certain pro-inflammatory compounds that are associated with chronic inflammation and cancer.  Importantly, ITCs kill off cancer cells, including cancer stem cells, which is essential for preventing metastases.  Read more about cancer-fighting ITCs and other benefits of crucifers HERE.

But while ITCs are great, another important compound in horseradish known as glucosinolates helps produce those ITCs. This happens when the flesh of a crucifer such as horseradish is cut or chewed.

According to research published in Vegetable Crops Research Bulletin, “glucosinolates in horseradish inhibit mitosis and stimulate apoptosis [cancer cell death] in human tumor cells. The substances may selectively inhibit the growth of tumor cells even after initiation by chemical carcinogens. They may also protect against tumor development.” [i]

Researchers at the University of Illinois have determined that horseradish is a potent anti-carcinogen as it detoxifies cancer-causing molecules and is absorbed well in the body.[ii] Importantly, they found that glucosinolates in horseradish help detoxify and eliminate troublesome free-radicals in the body. The researchers also discovered that horseradish contains more glucoisinolates than broccoli! Of course, for most of us it is easier to eat large amounts of broccoli than horseradish. Still, it couldn’t hurt to include this powerful root in your diet.

Horseradish is also a potent infection fighter. It contains a volatile oil called sinigrin, which is a natural antibiotic and contains other compounds that target upper respiratory issues such as congestion and inflammation. But that is not all.  Horseradish has been found to fight bacteria and viruses (including Epstein Barr), lower cholesterol, and stimulate the immune system.

For many, the only dose of horseradish consumed is in Bloody Mary’s or cocktail sauce.  So if you had too many Bloody’s in your younger life, know that it wasn’t all bad (and we all look forward, not back). I can’t speak of the mix or the alcohol, but at least you may have ingested a cocktail with some health-promoting, cancer- fighting punch. But this article is not intended to send you to the bar, only to tell you the virtues of horseradish.

Horseradish compliments dishes made with apples, potatoes, cheese, mustard, and eggs, and pairs well with cancer-fighting herbs such as basil, parsley, rosemary and various seeds. And should you be out of wasabi, know that horseradish is a fine substitute (wasabi is often horseradish dyed green 😊)

Oatmeal Buckwheat Flax Seed Pancakes with Black Raspberry Syrup

Black raspberries are anticancer powerhouses, even more so than raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries. All are loaded with flavonoids and anthocyanidins that reduce inflammation and contain cancer-busting phytochemicals such as ellagitannins and ellagic acid, but black raspberries really stand out. The phytonutrients in black raspberries have been found to inhibit cervical cancer cell growth and tumor formation, inhibit inflammation, and induce apoptosis in various cancer cell lines. According to the late Dr. Mitch Gaynor, M.D. world-renowned integrative oncologist, black raspberries are likely the most potent anti-inflammatory food out there.

Importantly, black raspberries have been found to target cancer stem cells, thought to be responsible for recurrent and progressive disease. Studies also show that dried black raspberry power may improve blood pressure and support cardiovascular health.[i] (For more benefits read, Raspberries: One Powerful Anti-Cancer Fruit.)

Black raspberries and blueberries are particularly high in antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are thought to protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. Free radicals are toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can cause significant damage to living cells and tissues in a process called “oxidative stress.” Free radicals are also produced by pollution, cigarette smoke, herbicides, and EMFs (Electromagnetic fields).* For that matter, some free radicals are generated by the immune system to neutralize viruses and bacteria (for information on antiviral substances, please read Epstein Barr Management.)

The trouble is black raspberries are hard to find and only in season for a short time. In this version of pancakes, I added a black raspberry syrup that will wow you. It is made with raw freeze-dried black raspberry powder, and is absolutely delicious.

Black RaspPancakes

 

Ingredients:

  • ¼ plus 1/8th cup whole rolled oats
  • 1/8 cup buckwheat grouts
  • 3 tablespoons organic whole flax seeds
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon fine ground Celtic sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon
  • Pinch ground cloves
  • Pinch ground allspice
  • 1 pastured egg
  • 8 tablespoons coconut milk
  • ½ teaspoon ghee, butter, or coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup fresh or frozen (but defrosted) wild blueberries (optional)
  • Black raspberry syrup (recipe below)

Instructions:

  1. Place the oats in a bowl
  2. Grind the groats and flaxseed in a coffee grinder and add to the oats
  3. Mix in the baking powder, salt, and spices
  4. Add in the egg and coconut milk
  5. Warm the ghee in a large frying pan over low heat
  6. Drop one 1/3 of the batter into the frying pan, smoothing to shape and flatten slightly. Repeat to make two more pancakes
  7. Allow too cook 3-4 minutes until slightly bubbling and firm; flip and cook 1-2 more minutes. Remove and top with blueberries. Sprinkle with additional salt, if desired.
  8. Drizzle blackberry syrup over the top and enjoy

Serves one hungry person (to serve two, make 4 smaller pancakes, two for each)

Time: 20 minutes

Black Raspberry Syrup — Mix 1 teaspoon freeze-dried black raspberry powder into 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup.

What sets maple syrup apart from sugar is its minerals and antioxidants.  Some research indicates maple syrup contains some 24 different antioxidants, with Grade B containing more than Grade A. While maple syrup falls in the category of sugar, some research says that pure maple syrup may promote a healthy liver and actually help regulate glucose metabolism and increase insulininsulin release.[ii

Dr. Gaynor believed that everyone should consume black raspberry powder daily, even several times daily to calm inflammation (especially effective for relief from upper respiratory issues).

You can add black raspberry powder to your favorite smoothie recipe or even just to water. You may find black raspberries in capsule form to be helpful as well.

Salt Therapy A.K.A. Halo for Health

Countless studies show that stress and inflammation contribute to most chronic diseases, including cancer. For years, doctors and therapists alike have been recommending stress-reducing trips to the ocean to take in the salty air and dig one’s toes in the sand. Could salt therapy offer similar benefits? According to some, just one 45-minute halo (salt) session offers health benefits equivalent to a few days at the beach, no air travel required.

Dry salt therapy, otherwise known as halo therapy, originated in the salt caves of Eastern Europe which were found to have healing properties and kept salt miners free of respiratory and skin ailments that were common to other miners. It has since been adapted to become a standard healing and prevention practice throughout Europe and is even available in many hospitals and doctors’ offices. I  recommend some deep breathing during the therapy to maximize the benefits.

salt haus 2I was invited to visit Salthaus in New York City for a healing session. The rooms are bright, spotless, and peaceful. I cozied up with a provided blanket, eye cover, and weighted neck pillow and fell right asleep. The staff was delightful and I left feeling calm and relaxed. Salthaus is great for kids and teens as well (my kids love Halo), but know that this salt room is on the second floor, so you will need to be able to manage stairs.

How Salt Therapy Works:

A natural disinfectant, salt is antimicrobial and antibacterial. Inhaling salt particles may reduce inflammation and mucus in the lungs, offering relief to those suffering from asthma, allergies, or even the common cold. The salt particles enter the airways and pores and break down mucus, kill bacteria, relieve inflammation, increase oxygen flow throughout the body, and give the immune system a boost. They do this by keeping the lungs, sinuses, and air passages free of bacteria, mucus, allergens, and toxins that get embedded in these areas, irritate sensitive tissues, and spread infections.

The calming, detoxifying, mood-boosting effects seem to support and restore immune function as well as other systems in the body. Some people report that skin conditions improve, helping those with psoriasis, eczema, and even acne.

While certainly not intended as a cure or remedy for cancer, salt therapy aids in detoxification (including after chemotherapy) and helps restore one’s immune system, thus supporting the healing process. Halo can lower stress levels, reducing risk of cortisol-driven damage to the body  (chronic high cortisol levels contribute to immune system deficiency and cancer) and may reduce the need for toxic allergy medications.

Tribute to Rose Green Ferguson

roseWhen Roses’ husband Hal called me to let me know that she was in transition, headed home to a greater place, I was beyond saddened, I was angry too.  Angry that cancer took yet another amazing woman, a person I loved and respected. A colleague and friend, Rose made the world a better place for having been in it, and I will miss her greatly.

When I first met Rose after her recurrence, she told me she decided against more chemotherapy as she had a strong conviction that it was not the right choice for her this time. Her training as a naturopathic practitioner and nutritionist — not to mention countless hours spent reading studies, articles, and books – provided her the knowledge, confidence, and strength that she was making a good choice. She had done the research and prayed for guidance. Rose prayed over ever decision to be sure it was the best for her body, knowing through God she would find the answer. She was determined to recover, and grateful for the perseverance and tenacity to move forward. She was steadfast in her belief that she was on the right path, but God had another plan for her. We can be angry with God, but he always has a plan, painful as it can sometimes be.

Rose lived with her cancer for over 18 years. She accomplished this through her immense knowledge and with the tender love and support she gave to and received from others, especially her family. Those of you who knew Rose knew that she did many things to combat cancer. She kept to a strict but delicious and varied diet, using the power of food as medicine alongside many supplements and essential oils. But most of all, she relied on her faith in and love of God.

Rose felt that a very big component to her health was her relationship with God.  She would meditate with God and visualize His healing power going into her bones and the rest of her body. She felt it was very powerful and would do this once or twice a day. She once told me she would speak every day to her white blood cells to increase and be strong like the Lion of Judah, in Jesus’s name. She would use visualization to see her lymphocytes making strong colonies like an army; shoulder to shoulder not allowing any abnormalities in her cells and in her body. She worked hard on this visualization.

Days before she began her transition, and while in great pain, Roses’ only thought was to share some things she learned from her new doctor. She wanted to share these with me as she thought it could help others. That was the kind of person Rose was, always striving to make a difference in the lives of anyone she crossed paths with and even those she hadn’t. She would pray for me, pray for others, and insist that others pray for others she was praying for. It brought a big smile to my face when I heard that over and over again at the celebration of her life.

But cancer is sneaky, and can take advantage of us at our weakest times (and even at our strongest). Stay vigilant; if you are on a holistic protocol that is working for you, stay on it. Try not to revert back to your pre-cancerous lifestyle that could allow cancer back through the door. If you notice symptoms, you may need to make changes to your protocol. Get checked out and don’t delay seeking treatment (conventional or holistic).  The sooner you address the issue, the better your chances.

However, don’t let the beast we call cancer get to your soul. The mind is more powerful than the body, so stay out of that dark place we call doubt. Most importantly, you don’t have to be dying to start living. Enjoy every day; tell your loved ones how you feel—you just never know when you won’t get the chance to do so.

Roses’ light still shines for me and for countless others. I will greatly miss her voice, love, kindness, and wisdom.  My heart aches for her beloved husband Hal and for their loving children, family, and friends.  Rose’s love shone through everything she did, always a kind word, a sweet note, or a cherished gift.  I can feel her presence as if she was still here, and in a way, she is and always will be.

Simple Solutions for EMF Radiation Protection

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, known by most of us as radiation, that have been found to cause great harm to the human body. I am not just talking about nuclear fallout, but importantly, cell phone use, WIFI technology, cordless phones, clock radios, hair dryers, X-rays, radiotherapy, air travel-associated radiation, and other exposures that pose day-to-day radiation toxicity. Sadly, we are all exposed to ionizing radiation and could be potentially at increased risk for adverse health effects.

Ionizing radiation causes damage by producing free radicals like reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS can randomly react with lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids of cells causing oxidative stress and damage which can lead to molecular and cellular damage. Oxidative stress is considered one of the major factors connected with increased cancer risk and is implicated in cardiovascular events, osteoporosis, male infertility, and more.

Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation can result in increased rates of genetic mutations. DNA damage caused by oxidative stress may lead to mutations that inactivate tumor suppressor genes and activate oncogenes.[i]

In addition to free radical production, another source of indirect post-irradiation toxicity is inflammatory processes. Radiation-induced damage initiates long-term pro-inflammatory reactions in the surrounding tissue. Exposure to large amounts of ionizing radiation could result in a severe inflammation reaction causing irreparable damage to various tissue and organs, particularly in the heart, lungs and kidneys.

In an attempt to minimize these effects, a small number of compounds in plants have been identified for use as agents that offer some protection against radiation-induced toxicities, and many more are being investigated. These effects are possibly due to free radical scavenging, antioxidant, metal chelating, immunostimulant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and enhancement of the DNA repair processes. Also likely is that certain substances are able to absorb strong energies such as EMFs and convert them into less reactive forms.

dragon-4The Role of Radioprotectants:

The need for protection against the toxic effects of ionizing radiation comes from many different directions: occupational exposure, nuclear accidents, environmental sources, the use of cell phones and other devices, and protection of normal tissue during the therapeutic irradiation of cancer. No matter the source, radioprotectants are important in protecting cells from deleterious radiation-induced side effects.

Radio-protectors are agents that protect the body’s cells and tissues from the undesirable effects of radiation by scavenging radiation-induced free radicals. In the past, synthetic radio-protectors were found to help mitigate or minimize the life-threatening effects of radiation, but they were not put clinical use due to undesirable side effects and inherent toxicity, such as hypotension, vomiting, nausea, sneezing, hot flashes, etc.[ii] Therefore, the exploration of radio-protectors with less toxicity became essential.

The first line of defense from the damaging effects of ROS is antioxidants, which convert strong oxidants to less reactive forms. Antioxidants can minimize the damaging effects of ROS by converting strong oxidants to less reactive forms. For example, the powerful antioxidant lycopene can protect and repair cellular damage from free-radicals, including those induced from ionizing radiation.[iii] This suggests that supplementation of lycopene might be useful in diminishing of negative effect of cancer radiotherapy or in mitigating the effects of possible radiation accidents and exposures on human health. Red fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes (especially when cooked), watermelons, red peppers, pink grapefruits, apricots, pink guavas, dragon fruit, and papaya contain lycopene.

Studies confirm that lycopene and other compounds in fruits, vegetables and associated dietary supplements reduce risk of cancer and inhibit the growth of tumors. Research also shows that nutraceuticals have protective effects against other diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, male infertility. These results could be in part due to their protection against damage induced by ionizing radiation, offering yet another reason to consume them copiously.

N-acetyl L-cysteine (NAC) helps to replenish intracellular glutathione, a vital cellular antioxidant.  Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) also helps boost glutathione levels (see below for more substances that boost glutathione). For brand recommendations, click on the highlighted supplement of interest.

Another substance, melanin, has shown to offer radioprotective properties and is being studied. It is already well known for protecting human skin from UV radiation. While found in foods such as seaweed, eggs, cheese, fish (rich sources of tyrosine, an amino acid that aids in the production of melanin), it is most abundantly found in mushrooms, particularly Chaga mushrooms. Compounds in melanin absorb electromagnetic radiation and help deactivate radioactive isotopes, converting them into benign forms.[iv]

To keep this post short and sweet, I have referenced some studies rather than get into depth on them all, but have included some highlights below. This list is not inclusive, but rather illustrative of how eating a significant amount of fruits and vegetables, and at times supplements, throughout the day can be radio-protective (Click on the highlights for a few brand recommendations for supplements–widely available in most stores).

 Fun Facts:

  • Lycopene reduces the negative effect of cancer radiotherapy and other sources of radiation exposure, especially in advance of exposure.
  • Compounds in Chaga mushroom absorb electromagnetic radiation and help deactivate radioactive isotopes, converting them into benign forms.[xvii]
  • Flaxseed, already known for its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, works as both a mitigator and protector against radiation exposure, including regarding pneumopathy. It not only protects lung tissues before exposure to radiation, but can also significantly reduce damage after exposure occurs.[xviii]
  • The protection afforded by flaxseed may be attributed to the omega-3 essential fatty acids and phytoestrogenic lignans, which appear to play an important role in free radical scavenging.[xix]
  • Asparagus are high in glutathione and also selenium and zinc, which  also help you make glutathione are protective against EMFs.
  • Olive oil and cruciferous vegetables (in particular the sulfur/sulforophane in these veggies) boosts glutathione.
  • Blueberries contain delphinidin, which has strong antioxidant properties that scavenge radiation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS), making them protective against a wide scope of radiation exposures.
  • Radioprotectors such as delphinidin used during cancer radiotherapy could offer some protection to normal tissues around a cancerous tumor, which are unintentionally exposed to radiation during traditional and proton radiotherapy[xx]
  • Blueberry anthocyanins inhibit cell apoptosis and reduce the radiation injury by decreasing gene and protein expression of p53 and other proteins that regulate cancer cell division, growth, and death.[xxi]
  • Apple pectin aids in removing radionuclides, with one study showing a 62% reduction in radionuclides in treated children from the Chernobyl area and another with a 28-39% reduction after just 16 days, improving cardiovascular health in the children.[xxii]
  • Flavonoids in fruits and vegetables offer a variety of beneficial properties including protection from ionizing radiation, DNA protection, immune system protection, hemopoietic system protection, scavenging of free radicals, antioxidant properties, antitumor properties, antiviral properties, antibacterial properties, and anti-inflammatory properties.[xxiii]
  • Intravenous administration of melanin-coated nanospheres has demonstrated protection of bone marrow against radiotoxicity during radioimmunotherapy of cancer. [xxiv]
  • Buckwheat flavonoid offer radio-protective mechanisms on the hematopoietic (bone marrow, spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes) and immune systems[xxv]
  • Plant compounds offer substantial protection and do not appear to interfere with therapeutic radiotherapy.
  • DIM may protect against ionizing radiation taken before or up to 24 hours after radiation and does not protect breast cancer tumors against radiotherapy.[xxvi]

Importantly, many compounds, such as the antioxidants lycopene and delphinidin need to be taken before exposure, which means it is best to consume these on a regular basis.  Enjoy in abundance tomatoes (especially cooked), blueberries, dragon fruit, mint (fresh or tea), apples,  flax seed, green tea, and others. Buckwheat is quite versatile and is naturally gluten-free –try this delicious flatbread recipe.

Regarding Radiation Therapy for Cancer Treatment

Radiation therapy is a highly utilized therapy in the treatment of malignancies with up to 60% of cancer patients receiving radiation therapy as a part of their treatment regimen. However, the radiation-induced damage to the normal tissues often restricts the therapeutic doses of radiation that can be delivered to tumors and thereby limits the effectiveness of the treatment[xxvii] Notably, researchers have found that there are numerous substances that are radio-protective and yet do not interfere with therapeutic radiotherapy.[xxviii] Unfortunately, not all radiation oncologists recommend such substances, so it is imperative that you seek help from a qualified professional.

Radiation therapy does, however, cause a wide range of adverse effects that can be severe and cause permanent damage to the patient.[xxix] Radiotherapy also does not target cancer stem cells and can actually make them more aggressive.

Radio-protective Devices

If you don’t see yourself consuming radio-protective foods and supplements on a regular basis or feel that you are particularly exposed (aren’t we all?) you may want to take advantage of the plethora of devices that offer EMF protection.  There are also many lovely and inexpensive shungite pendants and bracelets available online that help balance energy, as well as other items that can be attached to your cell phone, hair dryer, clock, laptop, etc., and to your own jewelry.
